Q2 Artist Statement
For this quarter we did contoured lines, paintings, recreation paintings, illustrations of texts and photo edits. With the contoured lines I drew whatever was near me which was a pencil, a hat, my glasses, an expo marker, my laptop, my Totoro pillow and a photo. I used pencils and colored pencils for these pieces. These didn’t take long to draw and color, possibly an hour or 2.
The next thing we did were paintings. In total I made three which took about 4-5 hours to complete. All three paintings were painted with water colors. The first one I did was a girl in a rainbow dress, I used a photo reference for that one. The next painting is a man smoking while the smoke is a galaxy. The last one I painted was inspired by my cousin’s bridesmaid. The wedding was a rustic type theme so I added branches, leaves and a flower crown to the painting.
The recreation paintings also took around 4-5 hours. For this assignment I did a simple festive christmas cat silhouette in Sakura Koi water color paints. As well as a bird in various positions. That one was also done with Sakura Koi water colors and a Sakura micron brush pen in black.
The illustration for texts I chose to do 2 songs. Both OSTs from dramas I really enjoyed watching. Both of these together took a total time of 4 hours. The first one is done in Copics, pencil and Sakura micron brush pens. The OST for the first illustration is from the drama “I’m Sorry, I Love You.” The song being Park Hyoshin’s Snow Flower. The next piece is from the drama Hwarang’s OST, “Even If I Die, It’s You” sung by Taehyung and Seokjin. That piece was also created using Copics, pencils and Sakura mircons. I decided to leave the heart in pencil and no touch it because I thought it wouldn’t look nice if I lined and colored it.
Lastly are the photo edits. I created 7 photo edits in total. All of them taking a few hours 2-3. All of the photos I had taken over the years, they were unused in my camera roll. So I thought I could make a good use and edit them for this assignment, I used 2 different photo editing apps, being Snapseed and Pixlr. All the photos were either taken in Philly, California or Florida. The first photo created was the one I took in California during the summer, I used Pixlr to edit that one. I wanted to leave only the sky and ocean colored because the blues were beautiful shades. The next photo was created in Snapseed, I used a photo from a botanical garden that I had taken in Florida. I liked a older and darker look for this plant. The tree photo I wanted to keep it simple due to the pretty colored leaves. The “Donut Baby” photo was of my baby cousin. I wanted to keep that one simple as well, but also make it look a bit older with filters. The photo next to “Donut baby” is that of my friend. For his edits I wanted a more older looking theme. For the second to last edit was the bird in California. I wanted a colder, bluer theme. Due to the cool winds and water. I wanted more focus on the bird so I decided to blur a bit of the surroundings in the photo. Lastly are the pink roses. Similar to the “Killer Plant” edit I wanted a darker, older theme. Just not as dark as that one. I created a darker background while trying to keep the roses in the lovely pastel pink. The pink of the roses is what I wanted to stand out the most in this edit.

The first thing we did this quarter was the blind contour drawings. I drew my a variety of things: my classmates, myself, people in the hallway and items around me. It took a few tries to get smooth, more connected drawings, but there are a few I am proud of. Next we colored them. I selected the colors for each drawing with my eyes closed, and was mostly satisfied with the results. The self portrait (fourth to right on the first slide) is my favorite with the watermelon boy next to it coming in second. After this, we were making our own painting. It took me a while to come up with inspiration, but I eventually got my idea after looking through a dog book and seeing the pug’s scrunched nose. I thought it would look interesting with an inked nose and eyes with a colorful contrasting background. I really like this piece, but I wish I had found this idea earlier, as I could have done multiple dogs. The recreating an art piece was especially fun. I love the movie Lilo and Stitch so much, so it seemed obvious to do a popular screenshot from the movie. I decided to do a mix of mediums (colored pencil, crayon, watercolor) to see if it would affect the textures of the drawing. Looking back, this was not the best idea - and If I ever recreate it I will stick to one medium. The piece of writing into art was difficult at first. I took the chorus of one of my favorite songs ‘Russian Roulette’ and went with a very colorful interpretation of the game they refereed to as love. The photo editing was my favorite thing so far! I tend to do this on my free time anyway, so I was able to pop out a bunch and submitted my favorites. The first two were originally very colorful, but I decided to eliminate most of them and focus on one tone. The next four I brightened up and changed some of the colors to make them pop. The grass/train track picture has a completely different style, with more blur and muted colors. For the last photo, I edited out the color in the background. Overall I enjoyed this quarter.

Artist’s Statement: In Q2, the main focus was on various colored pencil techniques. In particularly, we completed various blind contour drawings, pieces of fruit and a color wheel that helped us practice and hone the skills we learned using colored pencil. The blind contour assignments showed me how not to rely on the paper for reference when drawing something but rather to focus on the actual image I am drawing. These assignments taught me how to blend colors as well as what colors mix well together. One assignment that stood out to me the most was the fruit basket because I saw myself using the techniques I learned and then applying them to create colorful and realistic pieces of fruit. I hope I will be able to use these skills that I’ve learned from this quarter and apply them into the next.

Pedro Castillo: Senior Art Q2
Quarter 2 Senior Art was by far the longest art quarter that I have ever experienced and there was a wide variety of projects that were completed over the, roughly, 13 week period. Most of the projects this quarter were color pencil based and all involved some sort of coloring with a colored pencil. All except for the first project.
The first Senior Art project for quarter 2 was a blind contour project. We were tasked with creating, not 5, not 10, but 15 contour line drawings all which had to be completely different. Being a student at SLA, you never run out of subjects to draw but the challenge was picking what you were going to draw. After the contour drawings, we were to practice our colored pencil techniques by drawing spheres and practicing our shading using color. This was much more difficult because it was my first time trying to bring a drawing to life with actual color. We also needed to do a quick sphere shaped drawing of our own and I decided to do a colored skull which was extremely difficult to color since all the different shapes that make up a skull… shading was far from easy.
Next, we created our very own color wheels using nothing but the primary colors: red, blue, and yellow. The difficult part of this project was mixing the colors to make all the tertiary colors in between the primary colors. This really helped me understand how colors work though. The project after this was a colored portrait. I chose to draw a picture of my cousin. After the portrait, we were tasked with drawing and coloring four different fruits and this was by far the most difficult project for me. Not only am I very new to using colors but having to make these colorful fruits look lifelike made things 100x harder. I chose to draw a mango, pear, blueberries, and an apple. Later came more contour line drawing but these required colors. My favorite of these was the drawing of a friend of mine who is building a personality on YouTube and is doing very well. His name is Pingy, or Jonny He (youtube channel) and he is in the drawing of the male with the blue and yellow t-shirt on. Finally was a free drawing. We were allowed to draw whatever we liked but we had to color it as well. I chose to draw a fictional character named Sasuke from the anime, Naruto Shippuden.
This quarter I learned much about colors but I also learned that I need much more practice in order to create colored drawings that I will be comfortable with. I plan on coloring all of the drawings that I do on my free time from now on just to get as much practice as I can.
Q2 Artist's Statement and Slideshow
For the Second Quarter, I have made 6 different types of artworks. They were the blind contour drawings, add color to the contour line drawings, choosing your own painting, recreate a piece of art, illustration from a piece of writing, and photo editing. For the first assignment, I decided to draw the cartoon characters that I saw on the ceiling and the objects that were next to me. It was really hard to draw the characters and making it precise without looking at the character. For the second assignment, it was really easy to color the drawings I did for the first week without thinking. For the third assignment, I decided I wanted to make a Dreamcatcher. I use blue and purple because it is a cool tone color and that it is catching all of the bad energy. For the fourth assignment, I wanted to draw my favorite South Korean singer, so I recreated a drawing of him from Google. For the fifth assignment, I decided to Illustrate the song from Moana. I wanted to make the character scared of finding her own path. I use color pencils to add texture and color. For the last assignment, it was really funs getting to edit the photos and learning how to use the app. I got to edit the photo I took from San Fransico and the photo of me and my friend, Ashley.

"That Pasta Jawn"
The food that I am choosing to analyze is one of my favorite dishes made in my household. It does not have a name, I tend to call it “That Pasta Jawn”. It is made with Turkey Kielbasa, whole grain penne pasta, cayenne pepper, oregano, pepper, as well as fresh garlic, basil, onions, and red, green, and yellow peppers. I believe that about 60 percent of this meal is processed. The pasta and meat have the biggest proportions in the meal which leads me to think that the other 40% consists of vegetables. There is a lot of garlic, onions, and peppers involved which sort of equates the meat and pasta which are processed.
In total, this meal would cost about $19.59, but it would feed approximately 6 people. Compared to the fast food restaurants you’d initially think that the it’s cheaper than the meal that I described, but that isn’t the case. My meal would be able to feed about 6 people meanwhile a meal at a fastfood chain could vary from $5-$12 per person. Fast food lives up to the idea of being fast, quick, and easy, but often times home cooked meals can be cheaper and healthier.
Although this meal isn't 100% bad for you, it’s also not the best thing to eat every night. The protein that is apart of this meal is beef/red meat which isn’t so good for your body. They’re typically high in saturated fat which makes your cholesterol high and can later lead to heart disease if consumed too often. The whole grain pasta that’s involved isn't the absolute worst on the market, but it is still a processed food. Because it is whole grain, there’s more protein than regular pasta, but it is still a carb which isn’t always the best for your body depending on your diet.

Joan's Zucchini Bread
Ingredients:
2 cups zucchini raw, peeled and shredded
3 eggs
1.5 cup sugur
.5 cup honey
1 cup applesauce
1 cup coconut oil
3 cups flower
1 teaspoon baking soda
3 tablespoons cinnamon
Instructions:
Mix all ingredients
Cook for 45 mins at 350 degrease
Check center with toothpick
Cool for 10 mins
My mom make zucchini bread all the time, and I've always loved it. This recipe has a lot of whole foods but still some processed ones. sugar, applesauce, and flower are all processed while; the zucchini, eggs, honey, baking soda, and cinnamon are all whole foods. The only ingredient I wasn't sure about was the coconut oil. All coconut oils taste different, but are still very similar. The actual oil comes from the flesh of the coconut and its extracted at high temperatures not being processed, making it a whole food!
Q2 Artist Statement by Nick Ryan
This quarter, I created a lot of pieces of art. The first thing we did was blind contour drawings. We had to find at least 5 items and draw it without looking at the paper and do it all with one line. This was difficult as I had to predict my hand movement and proportion the drawing correctly. The second project we had to make a painting. I recreated Van Gogh’s piece “At Eternity’s Gate.” I used watercolor and oil pastels to create this painting. I dealt with a lot of trial and error with this project because my watercolor wasn’t vibrant and it leaked on other parts of the paper. This was not difficult, but it was frustrating and time-consuming. The third project we had to recreate a piece of art. I recreated the cover of “CAGE” a comic book created by Genndy Tartakovsky. I used my Copic markers and my Sakura pens to create this piece. I had a lot of fun doing this particular project because I love drawing cartoony things like this and it was a little difficult because I had to learn Tartakovsky’s style of drawing. The fourth project we had to create an illustration from a piece of writing. My illustration was based off the song “Changes” by Tupac. I drew Tupac sitting on a stool looking at the viewer, with a city which is supposed to be Compton bleeding in the background. I did this to symbolize Tupac’s pain he suffered in his hometown and his struggles to try to help it, but like he said, nothing changes. I used my Copic markers, my sakura pens, and color pencils. The final project we had to edit a bunch of photos. For this, I took a picture out of the window of the SLA school building, a picture of city hall, and a picture from when I went camping. The first picture, it was originally a gloomy picture but I increased the brightness and warmth of the picture to create a positive effect on the picture. The second picture, I did the same except I created a vintage old photo effect. It looks like an old photo taken from the 60s. And then the last photo, I created a weird effect. It was a picture from the summer and I changed the atmosphere from a warm, spring-like environment to a wintery cold environment. I changed the ambiance so that it has a purple effect. It looked cool to me. I learned a lot this quarter. I learned to proportion my drawings better so that the sizes in my drawings are better proportioned. I’ve learned to adapt my style so that it fits other artists’ styles. I’ve also learned to develop my own style of drawing. Finally, I learned the basics of photo-editing. Reflecting back on my artwork, my art has become clearer, cleaner, and more organized. This creates a more pleasing effect on the eyes of my viewers.
