"El pelo mojado"

http://www.powtoon.com/p/bxNX52TCF0N/

Y dejo a ella sola.

Ella estaba mirando a Clemens entonces, él caminó a ella. “¿Cómo me conoces?”

Sinceramente,

Rosaline Broad.”

“Rosaline Broad….. hmmmm.

Jaccar Garcia Capstone

Jaccar Garcia

Topic: Latin and Hip-Hop Dance

Mentor:
Faustina Garcia

Abstract Paragraph:

For Capstone I decided to continue the Latin dance but to also include new material. I taught a latin and hip-hop dance class in order to appeal to more individuals, giving me the opportunity to work with more students. I want to be capable of showing the students involved about a different world that they encounter often. Giving them a learning experience without them knowing, along with the learning the dances. I’ll be diving into the latin culture of dance, learning myself about the roots of my culture. Being able to express this knowledge through dance is something that I have had a huge interest in for years but haven’t had the ability to take at hand.

In the process of my capstone I acquired a concussion. This became an obstacle for me and did not allow me to finish my capstone the way I hoped for it turn out. I had envisioned an “end of the year” culture party where I would have the students perform the dances they learned and allow the guest to join in on the dancing. Though this was not accomplished, I’m still proud of how much I got done up to that point. I was reaching my goal with the students which not only was to teach them about a different culture but to share a joyful environment with adolescents who wanted to be involved.

Annotated Bibliography:

Bush '03, Jilaan M., "The Effect of Extracurricular Activities on School Dropout" (2003). Honors Projects. Paper 16.

http://digitalcommons.iwu.edu/psych_honproj/16

This is a study made by Jilaan M. Bush on the effect of extracurricular activities on school dropout. With this study it was concluded that extracurricular activities such as academic clubs, athletics, interest groups, and fine arts had a positive effect on school dropouts. This indicates that the more students become involved in activities of their interest they become less likely to dropout of school and have more chances of success. This resource relates back to the inquiry aspect of my capstone which is “How does a dance club help the youth of Philadelphia?”.

Eccles, Jacquelynne S. "Extracurricular Activities and Adolescent Development." Journal of Social Issues. Vol. 59. Ann Arbor: N. D., 2001. 865-89. Print.

This article address’ the positive influence of extracurricular activities within adolescents and include many statistics on the topic. The article and data concluded that the adolescents who joined and extracurricular activity had better educational outcomes oppose to those who didn’t join a extracurricular activity had higher rates of drinking. This article along with the study by Jilaan together help my capstone with the inquiry and support my reasoning for it.

Gibbons, Elizabeth. Teaching Dance: The Spectrum of Styles. Bloomington, IN: AuthorHouse, 2007. Print.

Through out this book the author Elizabeth Gibbons gives the reader many advice on

teaching dance. She helps the reader who is teaching dance to adults, the reader who is a beginner at teaching, a college teacher, etc. She covers every detail necessary to teach a dance class. Breaking it down the reader should be focused on, what the questions the reader should be thinking of, to helping the reader understand how to approach making lessons plans and what the requirements need to be met in order to have be a successful teacher and have a successful dance class.

Hernandez, Deborah Pacini. Bachata: A Social History of Dominican Popular Music. Philadelphia: Temple UP, 1995. Print.

This book gives the history behind the music of Dominican Republic. This including the genre that I have included in my capstone; bachata. This  is like the book Language of Spanish Dance but instead of giving an overall view of all spanish dances this book goes into depth about the specific genre that I am focused on.

Mack, Lorrie. Dance. London: DK, 2012. Print.

This book focuses on the history of dance, giving the reader insights to the various styles of dance and their origination. This book helps to serve as inspiration, allowing the reader to understand dance better. For myself this is a good resource for my knowledge throughout my lessons. Being able to know where it is certain dance styles originated from and what inspired them could help me see dance from a new perspective and teach my class the knowledge i’ve gained.

Minton, Sandra Cerny, and Karen Genoff. Modern Dance, Body and Mind: A Basic Approach for Beginners. Englewood, CO: Morton, 1984. Print.

This resource is an opportunity to learn from Sandra Minton, within this book she tackles modern dance and gives the reader a basic approach to learning modern dance. She goes into detail about the techniques of the dance and the dance movement. This book will give me another perspective along with her other book, Since she does well with going into detail about the dance techniques I can have a better understanding of what is necessary to know in able to allow others understand it.

Matteo, and Carola Goya. The Language of Spanish Dance. Norman: University of Oklahoma, 1990. Print.

This book goes into great depth about the spanish dances; Matteo describes the dance moves, their origins, their meaning, the movement sequences, and much more. The depth in this book helps me for my the presentation part of my capstone. Since I decided to latin dance this books help me explain in my presentation why it is that each dance move was the way it was or basic reasoning for some of the choices within the choreography. The book also explains the songs accompanied with the songs and what’s going on with the rhythm.

Minton, Sandra Cerny. Choreography: A Basic Approach Using Improvisation. Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics, 1997. Print.

This book is a approach to teaching the readers about the process of choreographing. Sandra Minton the author displays the process down to every last detail, of stage production, improvisation, the creation of dances from simple movements, and the process of creating productions from the choreographed dances. This book covers choreographing for all dance styles, including cheerleading.

Williams, Ann-Marie, and Jeff Kulak. Learn to Speak Dance: A Guide to Creating, Performing, & Promoting Your Moves. Toronto, Ont.: Owlkids, 2011. Print.

Ann-Marie takes the initiative to show her readers different aspects of dance in her book Learn to Speak Dance. Including myriad types on choreography, staging, designs and everything related to dance. This book can help me with the small things that the other book might not address which is the way dance looks, the little tips are what make the biggest differences. This should help when I record our final dances and make the presentations.

Songs

Brown, Chris. "Love More." Rec. 2013. Chris Brown. FRESHM3N III, n.d. CD.

Grace, Leslie. "Be My Baby." Rec. 2013. Leslie Grace. N.d. CD.

Santos, Romeo. Propuesta Indecente. Romeo Santos. Sony Music Latin, 2013. CD.

These are the songs that I have included in my capstone. The first song is Love More by Chris brown. This song is apart of my hip-hop class and was chosen because of the uplifting beat it had. Once I heard it I began to come up with several dances to the song, it’s the type of song that I knew my class would enjoy and get hype when they hear it. The second song is Be My Baby by Leslie Grace which had the same effect on me as Love More. The Third song is Propuesta Indecente by Romeo Santos and I knew I wanted to choreograph this song because it tells a story, and that’s something I was capable to portray within the dance.

"Calláte y deja me hablar!" dijo Mars. "Vamos a engañarlo a Pluto.

Jupiter pedio a Mars:

My capstone is a comic book, well more like a book of comics. I tried to keep on one single plot the whole time however my mind kept going to different ideas so I created a book of short comics with a how to draw section at the end. I plan on further developing the comics and characters after I graduate. I would like to thank Mr. Miles, Ms. Garvey-Gorgio, Ms. Hull, and Alex Woodburn for their help and support.

NOTE: THIS COMIC IS A GIFT TO THE SCHOOL AND IT WILL REMAIN IN THE SCHOOL LIBRARY AS I WOULD LIKE TO COME VISIT AND STILL BE ABLE TO READ MY CREATION. Thank You

This project started in the summer between my junior and senior year of high school, around August of 2013. Most of the work in the summer was figuring out the main plot of the comic and what characters of mine will be used. When school started, I gathered more information about the capstone and that it has to relate to the 5 core values of SLA. So all of them were pretty much covered except for collaboration. I decided that for the collaboration aspect I would give the students a chance to create a character (hero/villain/other) who could appear in the comic. I’ve also been working with Alex Woodburn who's been like an unofficial mentor giving me tips on how to make my characters seem anatomically correct. From September to February I’ve been planning and adjusting my comic to fit with the characters submitted. In February, I started working on the final comic. I decided it will be black and white since I don’t have the means to color it effectively. Now I am working on the end of the comic theres actually a post on Facebook about of the Student Created Characters for all of the original characters there is a section at the back of the comic to give them credit and admiration.

Abstract:

My capstone is about epidemic of homelessness in Philadelphia. There were 12,053 homeless people in Philadelphia in 2013 alone, a statistic that was widely overlooked by the general public. I figured that one of the best gifts or memory I could leave behind was knowledge of someone else's life, so that's what I set out to inform people on. My filming partner Martez Card and I took to the streets of downtown Philadelphia to interview different homeless people about their daily experiences/routines. We turned these interviews into a short film that captures our experience. This capstone has broadened my perspective of "hard times". I no longer feel capable of being upset over little things after witnessing less fortunate people still possessing the ability to smile.

1.

"Project HOME - Facts on Homelessness." Project HOME - Facts on Homelessness. Project HOME, n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <http://projecthome.org/advocacy/facts.php>.

This site helped me by defining the idea of a homeless person. I for one didn’t know that someone living with family, and depend on them fully, can be considered homeless. I also weren’t away of some of the many causes of homelessness like lack of health care, drugs, etc. This site gives many statistics produced by the most recent U.S Census. The stats were enlightening and new to me, and I think will go great in my end of the year presentation.

"Homelessness." Directory of Aging Resources. Philadelphia Committee to End Homelessness, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2014. <http://www.pcacares.org/OrganizationDetail.aspx?organization=Philadelphia Committee to End Homelessness (PCEH)>.

This site helped me by raising my awareness of the methods being currently used to counteract homelessness. The Philadelphia Committee to End Homelessness, starting in 2005, has been working since to fight one of the worst problems in the city. This site also helped me by giving me the contact information for people who are experts in my capstone’s field. This gives me the opportunity to become more equipped in this particular field of expertise.

3.

"Advanced Search." JustGive.org. I Do Donation, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2014. <https://www.justgive.org/donations/help-homeless.jsp>.

This site is unlike the rest, but still gives very beneficial information. It’s unlike the rest because this site gives actual advice on what you can do to help out anyone who is considered homeless. It gives a list of 35 critical things that could be easily accessed and given to homeless people. Many people think that only money can be given to them, and though that is very important, there’s more that can be done. That’s why this site is so important.

4."Long Periods of Uncertainty." What Is It like to Be Homeless? Shelter, n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2014. <http://england.shelter.org.uk/campaigns/why_we_campaign/tackling_homelessness/what_is_homelessness_like>.

This site gives you a more broadened perspective of homelessness. INstead of the obvious lack of food, water, and money, it lists other detriments that come with it. Lack of education for homeless children, the fear of being robbed and harassed, and many other things. Many people think that “street people” have a narrow list of problems, which isn’t the case. Also, people think that homeless children aren’t common, when in fact they are a large percentage of the population.

This site is beneficial because it gives a personal point of view from someone who was in a rough homeless position. The other sites display statistics and biased materials when giving perspective of the situation. The writer of the article is someone who spent most of his young adult life on the streets. He talks about his adventures, which gives the reader better insight. This source can prove reliable when we run our experiment.

This source speaks on the ban that the city of Philadelphia tried to have emplaced. The judge blocked this ban even though the Mayor had some reasons that could possibly make a good case for this to have happened. The mayor talks about how the homeless need other things than just food and this is why he tried to put the food ban into action.

This source gives you an overall view of the project home and the different things that it helps the homeless with. It shows you the way that they help the homeless children get their education it shows the time of job opportunities that they offer to people to help out the homeless and it also shows the different kinds of housing and medical care.

This source talks about the economic issues that are found with homelessness and also the change in the amount of homeless people who are out here on the streets due to something happening in their life. It shows the change from 2011-2012 and begins to talk about 2013. It also says that homelessness is caused due to the fact in which people have the inability to pay for housing due to the income made by everyone in the house. The income made per household is also dropping.

For this project my goal was to create a blog where students of any age could go to and find the latest fashion trends and styles of their choice for a cheaper cost. While creating this blog I had to keep in mind that many different students have different interest in fashion. Making creating this very difficult, because I had to keep in mind that not everyone likes the same things. There were lots of challenges while creating this blog. Some challenges that i have faced were being able to cover every base when it comes to fashion. Fashion is a very broad topic, so when you decide to create something relating to fashion, you have to be very specific. Which why I broke it down by seasons, celebrity looks, the hottest trends , and everyday fashion. I had to research where these items are online and possible in stores to find these looks and be able to compare the look the student may be looking for and where the student could find it and mimic this look. This was a very long process and very time consuming. But it made me very knowledgeable with things I have not known before. For example, where fashion has originated from, and how certain styles evolved. How can people wear certain clothing to still complete a look without having exact clothing. Overall I feel as though this was a fun and challenging project. I enjoyed being able to hopefully help other people as well as learning new things and helping myself. I also believe that if I would have started this blog maybe years ago, it could have been more well put together. If I could go back and do something differently,I would not do as many styles and trends. I say this because it was very difficult to find these styles for cheaper cost.

Olivia Smith was one of Mr. Hermans students and is a Hermanator Advisee Alum. She has helped by teaching me shooting and editing skills. Also she has been a big help in helping me find myself as a person through this Capstone process.

Summary: My Capstone is a documentary Proposal for the Roughcut and Digital Video programs. It showcases what has been done and what will be done whether or not we have modern/high quality materials.

Abstract: My Capstone process has been a very steady but challenging road. My documentary shows the amazing things that students can learn in the classes that are provided, and ways that Rough Cut Productions has benefitted not only the students, but other organizations as well. I filmed throughout the year and made sure to capture myself in the final product along with the people who created the program, and current program leaders. I really worked hard to fit as many great aspects of film and video into the documentary as I could, but it was difficult due to the fact that there are an abundance of good things to say about the program and I was working around a time limit for my final product. Even though it was hard to include everything, I learned new ways to edit video while creating my piece. A few things were split screen video, how to match sound and video when the tracks separate, and also how to make things look as professional as possible even when the highest quality of video is not available.

Bibliography:

1. Rosenthal, Alan. Writing, Directing, and Producing Documentary Films. Carbondale: Southern Illinois UP, 1990. Print.

This book was very insightful. I thought that it was very helpful because it gave me a great idea for the way that I should edit the documentary. I was very pleased with what I found in the book. the book told me that I should not go to film with a set idea in my mind, otherwise the project will not turn out to be successful. In order for this documentary to show Roughcut and Digital Videos true colors, it needs to be painfully truthful in a sense.

2. Room 237. Dir. Rodney Ascher. Perf. Bill Blakemore, Geoffrey Cocks, Julie Kearns, and John Fell Ryan. Sundance, 2012. DVD.

This film was one of the first documentary’s I have actually sat through and been engaged in. This was a film about all of the crazy incidences that happened in the movie the Shining directed by Stanley Kubrick. What I took from this was that even though the footage for the voiceovers was not from any of Kubrick's films, the footage was relevant to what the people were saying about his work ethic. I thought it was pretty cool because I was just thinking of  doing actual footage that I took but it occurred to me that I can you archival footage from previous students of previous years.

3. Spector, Col. "5 Simple Mistakes Documentary Filmmakers Make." Raindance Film Festival. Raindance Film Partnership, 2012. Web. 30 Jan. 2014.

This website helped SO MUCH. It basically showed you what not to do in a documentary that I think a lot of people pass up. There are many ways that a documentary can go and if you do everything that this website says not to, you, my friend, are in for naptime. This website showed me what not to do to be able to keep all of my viewers awake and engaged. For example; I had to be able to film without a set outcome in mind because if I would have done that, I would have been looking in the wrong places for people to interview. It basically says to just take a camera and see what people think about the topic.

4. Man on Wire. Dir. James Marsh. Prod. Simon Chinn. By Igor Martinovic, Michael Nyman, J. Ralph, and Jinx Godfrey. Magnolia Pictures, 2008. DVD.

This movie really pushed me to take risks with how I would like to shoot my documentary. I saw this documentary in 2012 in advisory, but did not think anything of it. When I started thinking about really sitting down and trying to figure out what I need to do to film a documentary, I thought of Man on Wire. I used a few shots that were in this movie. There is a shot where the camera is on the ground and is tilted up to see an image which is what the director did in this film with the twin towers. I also thought that this movie did a really good job of keeping the story going.

5. Exit through the gift shop

6. Spellbound. Dir. Jeffrey Blitz. Prod. Jeffrey Blitz and Sean Welch. Perf. Neil Kadakia, Emily Stagg, Ashley White, April DeGideo, Harry Altman, Angela Arenivar, Nupur Lala, and Ted Brigham. ThinkFilm Inc., 2002.

This film was pretty interesting. It helped me move my story line along in very interesting ways also. Even though the film is 11 years old, I thought that the editing was very well done. I used driving shots of driving to the spellers houses in my video to show that our school is inner city and kind of exaggerate a few things in the film. I also used another transition that they showed which is showing part of a town with a name and then showing the full image of the town and making the name disappear for  my opening credits. I really wanted my film to be as interesting as this because it really kept me involved on a topic that seemed boring to me when I picked it up.

7. Shaner, Pete, and Gerald E. Jones. Digital Filmmaking for Teens. Boston, MA: Thomson Course Technology Professional Trade Reference, 2005. Print.

This was helpful just for the filming side of things. The title really threw me off and I was really unsure of if I even wanted to read it. It blew me away though by the simple fact of having a chapter on how to make it look like you have been doing this for years. There are tricks and certain ways to film that I used in my documentary. It was really easy to pull off also.

8. Herman, Douglas F. "Roughcut Productions." Roughcut Productions. Roughcut Productions, 2009. Web. 2013.

This is the Roughcut website. This was interesting to me for my project because it describes the first few years of the program and the people that started it. It also has plenty of archival footage that is easily accessible for my usage. This was the start of my  inspiration for this project. I was really intrigued by the way the website was set up and how everything was made.

9. Herman, Douglas F. "Partners (Global)." Environmental Portraiture Partners Global Comments. Douglas Herman, 2011. Web. 2013.

This is Mr. Hemans website where he keeps all of his photos from other places in the world. This really helped me believe it or not because there is a portion from when he was in India. Roughcut is currently teaching a course online to students in India which I will touch on in my project. I went to his website to look at the differences in their environment and ours to try to help myself get a few things straightened out in my head because I wanted to see what it might be like to take this class in a different country.

10. Herman, Douglas. "RoughCutProductions Plus." Vimeo. Douglas Herman, 2009. Web. 2014.

This is another place where I can get archival footage for my documentary. I mostly pulled from one specific video which is the 2012/2013 film festival. This is where all of the videos from those two years were made and collected. That was the year that I really started digital video and had films in the full two hour long piece to showcase everything we did that year. I thought it would help because it is the most recent thing other than the few things we have from this year.

Jamekea S. Lee Capstone

Abstract

For my capstone I mentored young girls at my old middle school every Wednesday for eight weeks. Each week we discussed different topics such as, Social Media, Family and Friends, Violence, School, Society Views, and Self- Respect. As we had our discussion there was also assignments that the girl had to work on, which were all based on the topic of discussion. The goal of this capstone was to understand how young girls think, how the react, and what influence their actions. Each of the young girls had a journal which they wrote in just about every week about how they was feeling and I responded back to them each week. Through the course of the program I learned so much about these girls. I went in expecting them to be distanced and unwilling to work but they were open and allowed me to get personal. I learned that some young girls only need for someone to take the time out of their day and just listen, listen to their feelings and thoughts, knowing that they wouldn’t be judge. They made me realize that no matter what age you are, you’re still vulnerable and want people to be there for you, no matter how strong you are. This was a learning experience for not only the girls but for me.

COARD, STEPHANIE IRBY, ALFIEE M. BRELAND, and PATRICIA RASKIN . Perceptions of and Preferences for Skin Color, Black Racial Identity, and Self-Esteem Among African Americans. Journal of Applied Social Psychology, 2001. Web. <http://www.uncg.edu/hdf/facultystaff/Coard/Publications/Perceptions and Preferences for Skin Color.pdf>.

I chose to use this online book as a source because I think it’ll be a interesting read and it would help with my capstone. The book is about Black Racial Identity and the perceptions of it, I think it would be interesting to “learn” in a way about how blacks are looked at in society. If I learn more about how blacks are looked at in society, then I can teach the girls and tell them why it’s important to have a good character so society can have more respect for themselves. I’ll incorporate my findings into my work.

"Community Violence: The Effects on Children." The Child Study Center. NYU Langone Medical Center. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.aboutourkids.org/articles/community_violence_effects_children>.

This source is reliable because it breaks down how the community a child lives in can play a part in their behavior. If a child grows up in a bad neighborhood, then they will have bad tendencies because they don’t necessarily have the right role models to follow. I can like at this source as a what-not-to-do, and try to be a good role model for the girls I’m teaching. This source isn’t the go to source for everything though, I wouldn’t use this as what-to-do source but I’ll definitely use this as a fallback source.

DuRant, Robert, Chris Cadenhead, Robert Pendergrast, Greg Slavens, and Charles Linder. Factors Associated with the Use of Violence among Urban Black Adolescents. 84. 1994. <http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1614778/pdf/amjph00455-0086.pdf>.

I chose to use this source because it was a study to examine social and psychological factors associated with black adolescence. This sources relates to my capstone because I’m studying why black adolescent girls have little respect for themselves. This source states how community played a role in their decisions, I also think that community plays a role in the way black girls choose to represent themselves to the world. This source is very reliable and helpful for my capstone. I’ll use this source as the basis of my curriculum and to help plan out my activities for my capstone.

Galbreath, Lydia. Philosophy of the African American Identity Crisis: A Double Consciousness Exploration (2011): n.pag. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://urpasheville.org/proceedings/ncur2011/papers/NP50231.pdf>.

I chose to use this as a source because it’s about black racial identity which will help with my capstone. This source looks thoroughly into the Double Consciousness Theory and the role it plays in the African American lives. I found this source very reliable because it’s study and an overview of the African American culture and their lives. It’s a good source about the black society and how it’s viewed by people from other ethnicities, which will help me explain my reasoning for my capstone to the kids. It will help a lot with my curriculum and what I’m trying to do with my capstone.

Khattri, Nidhi, Kevin W. Riley, and Michael B. Kane.Students At Risk in Poor, Rural Areas: A Review ofthe Research. Pelavin Research Institute. 13, No.2. Journal of Research in Rural Education, 79-100. Web. <http://www.jrre.psu.edu/articles/v13,n2,p79-100,Khattri.pdf>.

This source is very reliable because it’s a online excerpt from a book published by people affiliated with Pelvain Research Institution. The book is about students who may be at risk in poor, rural areas which relates to my capstone because I’m working at a middle school in North Philly which is in a rural neighborhood. I can use the information I get from this source and feed it to my audience. I can teach about the risk they are at and how to prevent falling into traps of living in such a community. This source will help me spread information about how much community influences an individual behaviors.

"Middle School Survival." Understanding and Raising Girls. PBSParents. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <https://www.pbs.org/parents/raisinggirls/friends/mid1.html>.

I chose to use this source as a reference because it about middle school girls behavior. This source breaks down why some middle school girls act out in school and why their behavior may be bad. This source is a great start for me understanding the minds of middle school girl, while it may not be the best thing when trying to fully understand middle school girls, it is a good starting point. I can reflect on this site when I feel as though I’m having a hard time with the girls, this source will give me understanding of what’s going on.

"Parenting, the Social Environment and its Effects on Child Development." Virtual Medical Centre. Virtual Medical Centre, n.d. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.myvmc.com/lifestyles/parenting-the-social-environment-and-its-effects-on-child-development/>.

I think this source is reliable because it breaks down everything about parenting and social environmental effects on child development. My capstone was originally about how parents and the environment plays a major role in a child’s life but I changed it around a bit because I thought it was too broad and would cause a lot of problems. However, I will touch on the topic in a more settle and discreet way, so this source is good for me to pull information from. This source is also reliable for me to reflect on and even show the girls so they can look at it too.

Popkin, Susan J., Tama Leventhal, and Gretchen Weismann. Girls in the 'Hood: How Safety Affects the Life Chances of Low-Income Girls. Urban Affairs Review, Web. <http://www.dedoose.com/PDF/Publications/Popkin, Leventhal, Weismann_2010_Girls in the Hood.pdf>.

I chose to use this source because it relates a lot to my capstone. For my capstone I’m talking to 6th grade girls about self respect. Rather me taking up eight weeks to talk just about self respect, I want to give them facts about more things. Such as how society views them and what messages they’re sending out to society. I want to show the girls the long term effect of the choices they are making at such a young age. By referencing this site, I’ll be able to show them the work of people who actually study these sorts of things and that will helpfully help them understand more.

Stack, Carol. All Our Kin: Strategies for Survival in a Black Community. New York: Basic Books, A Member of the Perseus Books Group, 1997. 22-57. Web. <http://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=kDarMIro39YC&oi=fnd&pg=PR7&dq=black+adolescent+community&ots=K_7thnXl7V&sig=qv2s3ClE3Iifbot23Bu1BOqHNxU#v=onepage&q=black%20adolescent%20community&f=false

This source is very reliable for my capstone because within the book it has chapters about black communities and how they play a major role in black adolescents lives. I thought the chapters within the book were helpful in helping me understand more about the black community. Even though I’m from a black community, it’s good to have another insight about it from other people.  This source will be very reliable for getting information that I’ll need to complete my capstone and to help others understand my capstone. I’ll not only give people of different ethnicity a view of the black community but it will give African Americans a view of the black community.

"Youth in Action: Teens Forming Teens." What Kids Can Do. What Can Kids Do, Inc. Web. 29 Jan 2014. <http://www.whatkidscando.org/featurestories/2008/08_youth_in_action/index.html>.

When I reviewed this site I was looking to find articles about young black adolescence and their behavior. However, I was surprised when I seen a featured story about teens helping teens because it relates a lot to my capstone. This article helped me understand how to approach my audience in a more fun and interesting way rather than just laying facts out to them. It inspired me to make activities where they’ll teach me about their experiences and the reasons for the decisions they make. Although this source isn’t reliable for my whole capstone it is a good starting point for the activities I’m going to make.

Rosemary Flite Capstone

For my Capstone I am presenting a book review blog. I wrote posts about once every other week, resulting in 10 different posts. Even though there are only 10 posts, that does not mean there were only 10 books I read. I read a lot so every other week when it came to writing my review, I had several different books I’ve read to pick from. I was able to create unique and constructive reviews because of the options I had. My blog can be viewed here. My annotated bibliography can also be viewed here

Abstract:

I decided to do my capstone on the importance of volunteering. Ever since I was little, it has always been instilled in about the value of volunteering ad how I can make a positive difference in my community and neighborhood. This fits my interest because I have developed skill sets such has, problem solving, communicating, listening, etc that I could use in the future. As a result of this, I chose to create a website that informs the viewer on the importance of volunteering and also provided resources to many organizations and programs that high school students in the city of Philadelphia can be involved in. I also emphasize how important community service is and how it can benefit ones life - whether as a whole or individually. Last, I created a slide show that shows some of volunteering that I myself was involved in.

Bibliography:

1. "Why is volunteering important?." . N.p., 1 Jan. 2014. Web. 9 Jan. 2014. <http://www.idealist.org/info/Volunteer/Why>.

This website was helpful because it informed me more on why volunteerism is important. It talks about different options people have to begin their volunteer experience. In addition, this website gives statistics on the impact people have by volunteering not just in America but around the world, according to the Corporation for National and Community Service.

2. Saisan, Joanna, Melinda Smith, and Gena Kemp. "Volunteering and its Surprising Benefits." : Helping Yourself While Helping Others. N.p., n.d. Web. 11 Jan. 2014. <http://www.helpguide.org/life/volunteer_opportunities_benefits_volunteering.htm>.

This website had to be one of the most beneficial sites. It talks about the four main reasons why people should volunteer and the benefits that come along with it. Furthermore, it tells the viewer about the different skill sets that one can develop just by volunteering. This was especially important because my website is designed to inform others the importance of volunteering as well as what one can gain by doing it also. Last, it gives studies on the relationship between happiness and volunteering.

3. "Community Service: Top 10 Reasons to Volunteer." Community Service: Top 10 Reasons to Volunteer. N.p., n.d. Web. 17 Mar. 2014. <https://students.ucsd.edu/student-life/involvement/community/reasons.html>.

Just like the previous site, this website gives the top ten reasons why community service is extremely important. It goes a little more in detail about why a person should be content in making a difference in his or her community. Within the reasons, there are subcategories to make the viewer make up his or her mind.

4.  "The Franklin Institute." The Franklin Institute. N.p., n.d. Web. 10 Feb. 2014. <https://www.fi.edu/volunteer>.

This website was helpful because they have a great opportunity to student to volunteer in the different departments that is available to the public. While searching through the website, there are different positions that volunteers can choose from. This was helpful for me because my website was primarily design as a search engine to help others find their match.

5. "High School Explorer Program." High School Student Volunteers. N.p., 1 Jan. 2014. Web. 12 Apr. 2014. <http://www.chop.edu/about/volunteer-opportunities/volunteer-opportunities-applications/summer-teen.html>.

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia provides an opportunity for high students and adults to volunteer in the department of their interest. It gives the description and the eligibility requirements.

6. "Inspirational Quotes - Motivational Quotes - Leadership Quotes | Values.com."Inspirational Quotes. N.p., 1 Jan. 2000. Web. 27 May 2014. <http://www.values.com/inspirational-quotes/value/102-Volunteering>.

This website was extremely helpful because it helped me design my website. A lot of people may have second guesses on why volunteering is important. This website is filled with quotes from authors, humanitarians, poets and activist to motivate people to get on their feet to make a difference in their community and the importance of it. A few of these quotes were used in developing my website.

7. "Ways to Volunteer." Volunteering. The American Red Cross, n.d. Web. 24 Feb. 2014. <http://www.redcross.org/support/volunteer>.

The American Red Cross volunteer page was helpful because not only did it provide opportunities for people to volunteer for their company, but it also allows the researchers to learn more about what the Red Cross is about and talks about why volunteering is important. This was great for my project because this was used as a resource for high school students to get involved.

8. Matthews , Terry. "Jaden's Voice." Jaden's Voice. N.p., 1 Jan. 2013. Web. 18 Feb. 2014. <http://jadensvoice.org/>.

Jaden’s Voice is one of the organizations that I was apart of. Going to the events and volunteering was a major contribution to my capstone. This organization brings awareness to children with autism. They also provide education and resources to families who have children with autism. Being apart of Jaden’s Voice really broaden my horizons and skill development just by volunteering.

9. Brummell, Arden. "Resource Library." The Value of Volunteering. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Nov. 2013. <http://www.energizeinc.com/art/atimevalue.html>.

This website was helpful because this talks about the value of volunteering. The author shares a story on how a man from the Olympics was impressed on the the commitment and dedication that volunteers had. It explains what volunteering is and the importance of it. It also explains the richness and the value that volunteering has on communities and local neighborhoods. This website is written in third person so it makes it personal and draws the reader in.

This website is really great because this website is published by the College Board which is used by a lot of high school students and college students. Just like the other websites, this website gives information on reasons as to why one should volunteer. Towards the end of the website, it gives the viewers resources on how to get involved into the community.

11. Duplantier, Dolly. "How Volunteering and Service Can Help with College Admissions."How Volunteering and Service Can Help with College Admissions. N.p., n.d. Web. 19 Mar. 2014.

This website is good for my website because volunteering is critically important for the college process. It’s an interview that was done with a student explaining why college is looking for the students that have volunteer experience. Even though it may seem small and not important, this website informs on how having community service can actually save a person. This was helpful for developing my website as a resource for other to get involved in the college process.

La Leyenda de Jeremy Spry y los Banqueros

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXmNZRcE43I

Parte I

Fences Academic Piece

Troy has a large negative effect on Cory’s life, but it’s unlikely that he means to be this bad, and it’s probably just an effect of him treating Cory the same way that his own father and others from his childhood did.

On page 8, Troy tells Rose that “The white man ain’t gonna let (Cory) get nowhere with that football. I told him when he first come to me with it. Now you come telling me he done went and got more tied up in it. He ought to go and get recruited in how to fix cars or something where he can make a living.” This quote displays Troy’s motive for suppressing Cory’s ambitions. It’s obvious from this that he had a sort of falling out with white men as a younger man, and still resents that. This is clarified through a quote on the next page, where he states “Selkirk! That’s it? Man batting .269, understand? .269. What kind of sense that make? I was batting .432 with thirty-seven home runs!” And on the page after that he states “Hell, I know some teams Jackie Robinson couldn’t even make! What you talking about Jackie Robinson. Jackie Robinson wasn’t nobody. I’m talking about if you could play ball then they ought to have let you play. Don’t care what color you were. Come telling me I come too early If you could play then they ought to have let you play.” Through all of this we can see that Troy doesn’t think that Cory will have a chance in sports because of the impression he had as a kid of it being so segregated.

Troy also disregards Cory’s arguments for why he should be allowed to go to Football practice. On page 35, Cory and Troy are arguing about Cory’s future. “Cory: Coach Zellman say the recruiter gonna be coming by to talk to you. Get you to sign the permission papers.
Troy: I thought you supposed to be working down there at the A&P. Ain’t you supposed to be working there after school?
Cory: Mr. Stawicki say he gonna hold my job for me until after the football season. Say starting next week I can work weekends.
Troy: I thought we had an understanding about this football stuff? You suppose to keep up with your chores and hold that job down at the A&P. Ain’t been around here all day on a Saturday. Ain’t none of your chores done… And now you telling me you done quit your job.
Cory: I’m gonna be working weekends.
Troy: You damn right you are! And ain’t no need for nobody coming around here to talk to me about signing nothing.”
While Troy does seem to have an argument, even if it isn’t that strong, he does disregard some of the stuff that Cory tells him, like when he completely disregards when Cory tells him that Mr. Stawicki is holding his job and that he’s still going to work on weekends, and starts yelling about how “you done quit your job.” It’s almost like he’s only taking in what he wants to hear. This is a big sign towards an ulterior motive, which could easily be his previous bias against the white folk and sports.

And finally, the last piece of the puzzle. When Troy realizes that he can’t convince Cory to give up football, he flat out goes behind his back and destroys any chance of him getting on the team. This is shown on page 57.
“Rose: What’s the matter? Cory … What’s the matter?
Cory: Papa done went up to the school and told Coach Zellman I can’t play football no more. Wouldn’t even let me play the game. Told him to tell the recruiter not to come.
Rose: Troy…
Troy: What you Troying me for. Yeah, I did it. And the boy know why I did it.
Cory: Why you wanna do that to me? That was the one chance I had.
Rose: Ain’t nothing wrong with Cort playing football, Troy.
Troy: The boy lied to me. I told the nigger if he wanna play football … to keep up his chores and hold down that job at the A&P. That was the conditions. Stopped down there to see Mr. Stawicki…
Cory: I can’t work after school during the football season, pop! I tried to tell you that Mr. Stawicki’s holding my job for me. You don’t never want to listen to nobody. And then you wanna go do this to me!
Troy: I ain’t done nothing to you. You done it to yourself.”
Cory then says a key line that helps verify all of this. Troy responds with a stern talk.
“Cory: Just cause you didn’t have a chance! You just scared I’m gonna be better than you, that’s all
Troy: I’m gonna tell you what your mistake was. See… you swung at the ball and didn’t hit it. That’s strike one. See, you in the batter’s box now. You swung and you missed. That’s strike one. Don’t you strike out!”
Troy’s statement after Cory’s revealing comment shows that deep down, even Troy knows that he’s envious that Cory has a chance at sports when he didn’t. If Troy didn’t believe this, he probably would’ve acted a whole lot differently.

These pieces of information are the reasons that I think Troy suppresses Cory so much over the book. It can be viewed as a mixture of bad childhood memories, jealousy, and fear. You almost have to feel sorry for Troy. He has obviously been through a lot of pain, but he’s let it get the better of him and makes his son miserable too, and that’s inexcusable.

Abstract

The initial inspiration behind my hair website is the beauty I use to see in natural hair. Viewing others with long curly hair inspired me to go natural myself and from that day on I have been. Although I have always had curly hair it was unhealthy and damaged but research was key for me to get my hair to the health state it’s in now. Today I see more and more women and even some men rocking their natural hairstyles and that encouraged me to share that with others.

Empezaba a volar.

¿Vas a venir a nuestro campo?

--No estás soñando, mi amor.

Shannon Powers Capstone

My capstone was a book something that I had been wanting to write down for a long time. It was funny because I wasn't going to do this at first. I was actually going to paint seashells. Then I realized I hated the idea and talked to my mentor Bethany Carter about changing it to my book. then I went though writing in it. There was no need really for sources, because I already knew what I was doing and how I was going to do it. I'd been drawing the characters in the book before I even decided to write it. Nothing helped me more than the comments my two biggest fans wrote.

Devil's Charms

Patterson, James . Maximum Ride:The Angel Experiment. 1st ed. New York,NY: Little,Brown and Company, 2005. 422. Print.

This book was used for the writing style. I love the way you can just get inside Max’s head. Thats what I tried to do with Salem, I wanted to give you a clear idea of what he was thinking.

Clare, Cassandra. The Mortal Instruments- City of Bones. 1st ed. New York,NY: Simon Pulse, 2007. 485. Print.

I used this writing style a lot as well. I wasn’t a huge fan of writing in the third person and I had tried it out,but Salem’s personality required I write in first person so one could see how he saw things. What I used from her was the style of using details only when needed.

Paolini, Christopher. Eldest. first. New York,NY: Random House Children's Books, 2005. 679. Print.

When I had decided that there was going to be a dragon in my book I knew I was going to need ideas. I needed something that had a good description of what a dragon could look like from tall to small.  So I picked up my Eragon collection and started taking notes.

Striefvater, Maggie. Lament- The Faerie Queen's Deception. 1st ed. Woodbury,Minnesota : Llewellyn Publications, 2008. 325. Print.

This book gave me the idea of having a great number of different types of myths. I needed diversity in my Underrealm creatures and it took time to work out all of the details. However, this book  was a big help.

Kato , Kazve. Blue Exorcist - Volume 2. 2nd ed. Shonen Jump Advanced- Manga Edition: Tokyo, Japan, 2011. 195. Print.

Yes I’m citing a manga. Anyway I used this one to give me a good idea of how some of the things Salem had as a demon would look.

Meyer, Stephenie. Twilight. New York,NY: Little,Brown and Company, 2005. 544. Print.

I used to reference how my vampires wouldn’t be. I wanted them to be bad as hell not pansies. So I thought it a good idea to make my pixies shine in the sunlight.

Carter, Bethany. Personal Interview. 29 Jan 2014.

I used her to bounce ideas off of and also there are a couple of teasers from her book mixed in with mine.

Powers, Shannon. Personal Interview. 31 Jan 2014.

It was my idea. All of the ideals and plotline in this book were ideas of mine. The characters are all amazing brain farts.

Cast, P.C. Marked- House of Night. 1st ed. St. Martin's Griffin, 2007. 306. Print.

This was where I thought about how sunlight would affect my Vampires. It’s also how I decided that elemental powers for the Nymphs was brilliant.

Finch, Jenny. The Vampire Book- The legend, The Lore, The Allure . 1st ed. New York,NY: DK Children , 2009. 96. Print.

This was an amazing help in finding the perfect balance of old lore and my own ideals.

Financial Education - Blog Post #3

Hello again! It’s Felix, back with my last blog post. This one is my Agent of Change post, and I’ll be telling you guys about what I actually did in the real world to help solve this problem of Financial Education.

As I just mentioned, my topic is Financial Education and Literacy in America, and how people don’t learn enough about money to be safe and successful in their lives. People are being sent out into the world with no training on how to pay taxes, manage debt, or make money. And even though it is more important for people to learn more about the necessities, such as using a credit card, it’s also important to know how to make money. Not nearly enough people know about or use stocks to their advantage. I went on a quest to change this.

A lot of lessons about Financial Literacy and Responsibility are being taught around the world, and they help, but they aren’t always accessible. Many schools don’t have a program properly suited to helping kids get out into the world with the proper tools and knowledge. I tried to make my own little dent on my little community.

As I said in my Second Blog Post, I was hoping to teach at least one lesson to a class of First Graders, Third Graders, and Eighth Graders, as well as a presentation to some Ninth Graders. I only succeeded on one of those counts; I taught my advisory, the Ninth Graders, but I couldn’t get the scheduling quite right for the students at my old school, ICS. In the end, I made a smaller impact than expected, but I still taught about 20 students some of the very basic skills they need to flourish financially.

However, this is only 20 students out of millions that aren’t being taught correctly. Even if I had gotten to my goal of about 100 students (the ones listed above), I still wouldn’t have made enough of an impact. The real threat is that education mandates WORLDWIDE are not giving our students a fighting chance. They would rather teach students about the Pythagorean Theorem, which only some of them will use, than about how to get a job, which all of them will need. Also, even if you’re the most qualified person in the world, you still need to know how to get and maintain a job, and how to manage the money you make.

These are some of the things I talked about in my presentation. The presentation that I showed (the slideshow that I used) is here, and some of the notes that I used are here (I used the section titled “8” for eighth grade, as the lessons were similar). I had the students talk in groups, and I taught them from the notes as well. At the end, I let them ask questions about things they weren’t sure about or wanted to learn more about.

There should really be more of these lessons. Teachers should take just a couple of classes out of the year to teach their children about more important issues, and to teach them serious life skills. I am lucky to have attended two very good schools, have to very informed parents, and a very open family that I can talk to about financial issues. However some people don’t have this, and therefore are suffering because of it. Schools should teach more about Financial Education, and really a lot of other life skills as well.

I would like to acknowledge SLA and ICS, for being very helpful support systems when I needed help, and also for letting me teach there; my parents, for helping me through this long project and teaching me about Financial Issues; Miss Dunn, for letting me take an hour of her time to teach, and even more of her time for her to help me. She has helped me so much through this process. I couldn’t have asked for a better guide.

The Stigma of Mental Illness Blog #3

Hi. My name is Isabel Medlock and I am a freshman at SLA. Earlier this school year my English class started a project called You and the World. Everyone in my class chose an issue and researched that issue. I chose the stigma of mental illness, the negative way society views mental illness. After we chose an issue and researched it, we wrote two blog posts about it. Here is the link to blog #1. In this blog post I wrote about what the stigma of mental illness is and how people are affected by it. In blog #2 I wrote about the Mental Health Parity, discrimination those with mental health issues face, an interview I conducted with a mental health professional, and my opinion on the stigma of mental illness. This is my last blog post and it is the post for change which is the last part of the project.

There are several ways people are trying to raise awareness of the stigma of mental illness. There are some organizations and campaigns. Some examples of these types of campaigns are Stamp Out Stigma, Stand Up For Mental Health, and I Am Not Crazy.  Stamp Out Stigma is an organization that tries to reduce the stigma of mental illness and substance abuse by educating people and encouraging to them to discuss this issue. Stand Up For Mental Health teaches mental health consumers how to turn their problems into stand up comedy acts and perform them. I Am Not Crazy helps raise awareness of the stigma of mental illness by using social media and the internet. Also, every year on the first full week of October is Mental Health Awareness Week. During this week there are events that educate others about mental health and promote the education of mental illness. These events are designed to help end the stigma. These are all very good ways of changing society’s view on mental illness but I think more should be done. Even with all these organizations and events not that many people know the truth about mental illness or know about the stigma. I think children should be educated on this subject in school. If children were educated about mental illness they wouldn’t believe in the stereotypes surrounding mental illness and that would greatly reduce stigma.

Students on a website during my presentation.

For my agent of change piece I made a presentation to my advisory about the stigma of mental illness. In my presentation I explained what the stigma of mental illness is and why it is a problem. First I told them to go on a website and learn some things about mental illness and take some quizzes. Then I had each group read some stereotypes and discuss whether or not the stereotypes were true. At the end I showed a video from Bring Change 2 Mind. By doing this I helped raise awareness of the issue. Hopefully the people who viewed my presentation will want to learn more about mental illness and the stigma and maybe try to help reduce the stigma.  I enjoyed doing this project and learning about the stigma of mental illness. I think it’s a very important issue that needs to be talked about more, especially in schools. One thing I learned about myself and others is that when we are ignorant about something it often leads us to believe in stereotypes. The reason there is so much stigma surrounding mental illness is because people don’t learn about it.

photo 4.JPG photo 1.JPG

My presentation.

All the pictures above are from my presentation. In the first two pictures students are on a website, learning about mental illness. In the third picture students are discussing common stereotypes about mental illness. In the fourth picture I am explaining what the stigma of mental illness is.

I think I could have done a better job with my agent of change piece. I don’t think I’ve done enough. There are still so many people who don’t really understand mental illness and the stigma surrounding. I wish I had done something that would inform more people about this problem. There is still so much left to do to change people’s view on mental illness. People need to be educated about mental health. We need to change the laws that discriminate against those with mental health problems. We need to make people with mental health problems feel accepted instead of ashamed.

I would like to thank Ms. Dunn for all her help and advice. I would also like to thank all the people who helped proofread my blog posts.  I have enjoyed doing this project and I have really enjoyed learning about the stigma of mental illness. I hope that in the future it will no longer be a problem.

Thanks for reading my post! :-)
