Pasta Salad

Ingredients:

What you will need:

All the ingredients

1 Big sized pot

1 Medium sized pot

1 Big Bowl

Directions:

1. Gather all the ingredients and have them out. 

2. Boil two pots of water. One big pot for the pasta and one medium pot for the broccoli. 

3. When the big pot comes to a boil put the pasta in and continue to stir occasionally.

4. When the medium pot comes to a boil put the broccoli in and continue to stir occasionally.

5. While the water is boiling cut the tomatoes, cheese and roasted peppers into bite sized pieces. 

6. When all the ingredients are cut put them into a big bowl. 

7. Chop up the whole red onion and a little bit of garlic and add them to the bowl. 

8. Once all the ingredients are cooked and cut stir them all together into the bowl.

9. Add oil and vinegar salt and pepper to the mix. The amount is up to you. 

10. Then enjoy! :)

Analysis: 

The ingredients in the pasta salad were all bought from the grocery store. All of the items were technically processed, yet still healthy. All the vegetables we bought, which meant they were processed because of everything they went through to get to the store, but it is still healthy. The cheese and pasta although not bad for you were processed. There are a lot of carbohydrates in pasta, which is okay on occasion but not excessively. Eating pasta everyday is not healthy or good for you. The pasta salad itself would not be healthy eating everyday because of the excessive amount of pasta and ingredients like olive oil. Yet, some of the ingredients that are in the pasta salad are okay. Broccoli, depending on how it is made on how it is prepared is fine eating everyday. Though roasted peppers, grape tomatoes, onions, and cheese are really tasty and okay to eat in moderation, these are items that should not be consumed on a daily basis. Cheese is very high in calories, so it would not be a good modification to one’s diet. All of the food was was made and processed in the United States. None of the products are made out side of the country, which means that none of the food was imported. None of our food items were grown organically. Because all of the food is processed there are fuels that take part in the getting to the store, which tends to make it not environmentally friendly. Buying all the products came to a total of $20.00. With serving about 10 people, makes the cost per person about $2.00. This is a lot cheaper then fast food and it happens to be a lot healthier. (Still can’t eat it everyday) No items were grown ourselves, all were purchased at the store. So although it is not that environmentally friendly or healthy it still better than most foods.  

Reflection: During this unit I learned a lot about the different meats and how they were made. I did not know how the chicken were fed or how they were taken care of on the farms. I am a vegetarian but if ate meat I think that I would have stopped after we watched the Food Inc movie. I think my role in the food system is important because I am one of the few people who are not eating any of the meat that was processed by these careless owners. More and more people are trying to eat healthier and becoming a vegetarian is a start. What I see the biggest issue that the food system is currently facing is the lack of money. In the videos and articles that we watched they fed the chickens and other animals corn because it is cheap. Also they gave them hormones because they will grow faster and they can sell more then they would without the hormones. Overall this was a unit that a lot of people were interested in. I had to chance to see how my traditional diet was different from others in the class and to see how our food is really made.

Final Portfolio

  Before I came into his class I wasn’t sure what we were going to do. When I first walked into Mr. Block’s class I wasn’t a good writer and I didn’t like history class but Mr. Block made his projects different and creative. Every project was unique in its on way and that’s what I liked about it. We had the freedom to write our thoughts in our papers.

“I am me and that’s who I want to be

 I am fifteen cool, fun and free

 I see and hear just like you

 But very different I am to you”

About a month ago Mr. Block told us to make poetry wiki of all different poems we are going to write in class during our poetry unit. One of poems I was most proud of was my riff poem.

“The feeling you get when you realized you can run all those miles
Every step we take were getting closer
Is that want we want?”  

  There were projects that I found hard and there was projects that I thought were easy but I made sure I turned in my best work. Hard work leads to a lifetime accomplishments. My language autobiography was a writing that I worked hard on. In my Language autobiography I wrote, “Yes, it may take a lot of work and you may struggle and at times it might not make sense but language helps you accomplish greater things.” That is true with language but also with everything else if you work hard enough.

This English school year I tried my best then messed up sometimes but now I know my mistakes and can help me in the future. Looking back at the year I grew as a writer and improved in other areas. Everyone is at different levels but no matter what if you put everything you can into the work you will get the grade you deserve.

My strengths in English are reading books and collaborating with others about the story.  My weakness in English is my process with the projects I wait until last minute or don’t stay focused in class but I think from the beginning of the school I have gotten better at that, also my spelling I want to work on my writing a lot more I am very creative and I think if I really try I can have great pieces of writing.

Going back and looking at my work Is funny also something that all students should do because you get to change things, know what you need to work on also remember your year. It’s funny because it’s like oh my god I wrote that or what was I thinking if its something that you didn’t think you would write or do. Some issues that occurred were my journal entries because my journal entries were not organized and fully done I went back and polished my journal entries. 

The piece I am most proud of is my Macbeth creative. I did a keynote with my own pictures and some from the Internet that show lady Macbeths journey. I feel as though I did my best on this project. What I wanted to do was make people understand her change through my own pictures and how I thought this the picture should be and others understanding it. I worked on it whenever we had time to, I was focused.

Introduction: I think that people knowing and learning different languages are important and it’s something that I wanted to write about. My language autobiography is about some of my experiences with learning a different language also authors experiences and that they wrote about.

Reflection: This project was very difficult for me at first because I had no idea what I wanted to write about. I never really paid attention to what other people had to say about language so it was interesting to read about other people’s opinions. My strengths with this project were writing my own experiences because it was so easy to talk about. My weaknesses were trying to stay on topic since it had to be almost a thousand words I thought I was going to get off topic.
 

Paper:
In school you are required to take a second language for at least two years, but why? Why can’t I just know English? What if I don’t want to learn another language? We are all taught Standard English and that is the right way to speak so why would they teach us something different? The school district thinks it will benefit us in our future but what if we don’t think it will? Then why do we need to know two languages?

The day has come the day I get my first quarter report card for sophomore year. I walk into the tiny room with my advisers and my mother. I look down at my narratives. I had an amazing report card but unfortunately Spanish is the first subject on the list. My mom looks at my report card disappointed because of my Spanish grade “D?” she says with a frown on her face. I was not happy with her face at all. I went on and on about how my grade could be better and most importantly how I got that grade. First, I said, “I do not understand Spanish it’s just not my subject. I don’t want to take it next year if I am going to keep struggling.” My mom stopped me right there and said “Isn’t it much better if she knows two languages?” Mr. Kay my advisor said “Yes its much better” At that point I realized that I should make the decision if I want to learn a language or not.        

“Language, a place of struggle” says bell hooks. Those five words mean a lot because language is a place of struggle. In my opinion language is important because not only do you need to know English to communicate with people but also if someone speaks a different language you need to know how to speak it to, that’s not always easy. Spanish for example is totally different from English and to expect someone to learn it and be able to speak it fluently is much harder then you think. I feel as though if you don’t understand the language and don’t want to learn it then that’s your choice. But again, if you think about that line “ Language, a place of struggle” you know its going to be hard and you can work through it.

Sometimes you need to do certain things to exceed in the subject you are learning. In the story “I just want to be average” by Mike rose, mike rose talks about some of his experiences in the classroom. He was placed in the Vocational track, which are mostly classes for students who are not doing well in school. Mike thought he had to be like everyone else and be good at every subject. When people learn languages or just any subject in school everyone is at a different level that is okay. Mike Rose did not understand that.

My first day of Spanish 1, one of the scariest days of my life. I have my binder and pencil out and the first thing I write in the corner of my new shiny loose-leaf paper is “Ahorita,” which means do the activity on the board right now. I didn’t no what to expect, I didn’t think I was going to do well in this class. As the days of the school year go by and I am just passing with a B when I know I can do better. I thought that since this was my first year ever learning a different language, which me not understanding it is okay but then the next school year came. I was dreading the day I had to step foot in the Spanish classroom, like always I put Ahorita at the top of my paper the first day. I knew that coming into Spanish 2 was going to be a little rough for me because I had difficulties the previous year. It turns out I was right. When I received my first test back it wasn’t what I wanted it to be. I went straight to my teacher to seek for help. He explained to me that it is fine that I am having difficulties. It will get better if I just keep studying. I realized everyone is at a different pace. I am normal I just need to work harder.

Yes, it may take a lot of work and you may struggle and at times it might not make sense but language helps you accomplish greater things. Language helps you work harder to achieve your goals. People might think now why do I need to talk Standard English or even learn a different language but in the long run it will pay off.

Lady Macbeth

Thesis: Lady Macbeth was a controlling and confident person in the beginning by the end she was a weak and guilty person.

Act 1 scene 5 Lady Macbeth is by herself talking to Macbeth even thought he is not there. Also thinking about what is happening. King Duncan and Macbeth are coming to the house for a dinner and she needs to get ready. (Act 1, scence 5, line 38, page 17)

Lady Macbeth has her time alone talking and she says “ Come you sprits that tend their mortal thought unsex me here.” What she is saying is that she is not afraid of Duncan. She wants to be stronger then Macbeth manlier. Lady Macbeth wants evil in her to keep her strong. Lady Macbeth is controlling she is going to do anything to succeed finish what she wanted to do.  She wants to me able to do what she wants not be afraid or feel guilty after.

In act 1 scene 5 Lady Macbeth is talking to Macbeth to tell him you have to be nice and innocent to the king and the quests. Lady Macbeth in (Act 1, scene, 5, line 24) says “Look like the innocent flower but be the serpent under it.” This means that they need to nice to the king so they would not suspect anything that they are going to kill Duncan. The play she is now very confident in her plan wants it done and over with, with no problems. If they’re good at the dinner then they can proceed.

Lady Macbeth in act 1 scene 5 she is preparing for king Duncan he is arriving at the castle any minute to have a dinner. She doesn’t want to quit she needs to stay strong so she is able to do the murder. (Act 1 scene 5, line 42). Aside Lady Macbeth is talking and she says “ stop up the’ access and passage to remorse.” This quote from the play that she says means she can’t regret this. Lady Macbeth needs to be evil, mysterious and stay that way. In this scene is very important because this is lady Macbeth is powerful.

Lady Macbeth in Act 1, scene 7 lady Macbeth is talking Macbeth into killing Duncan. If Duncan dies Macbeth will be king and she is will be queen. Lady Macbeth is doing all she can to make him go through with this plan. (Act 1, scene 7, line 60) Lady Macbeth says, “ we fail? But screw your courage to the sticking place and we’ll not fail.” This means she is saying Macbeth needs to man up and do the plan. They will not fail there is nothing to worry about.  She explains everything to him and soon he agrees with her to go through with it. At this point lady Macbeth is feeling very confident in herself and is not scared.

In act 2 scenes 2 Macbeth has just killed king Duncan and is freaking out because he regrets it and feels guilty while Lady Macbeth is covering it up there is a level of panic in the room.  (Act 2-scene2, line 35) Lady Macbeth says “these deeds must not be thought after these ways so it will make us mad.” This means that they not repeat this to anyone it is a secret and if they talk about it, it will stay in their minds and drive them crazy which soon will happen to both but Macbeth isn’t as strong as lady Macbeth, his guilt will show more and earlier in the play. This shows Lady Macbeth will find a way to fix everything to make sure they are not caught and that is not spoken of again. Also lady Macbeth can put the guilt feeling aside at this point , which Macbeth cannot do.

In act 3 scene 1 king Duncan I dead and they are having another dinner but someone is missing. Macbeth was thinking that Banquo was going to get suppsious or try to take his position as king. Lady Macbeth is worried. Macbeth kills banquo (Act 3, scene 4 line 110) Lady Macbeth says, “ You have displaced the mirth, broke the good meeting with most admired disorder” The quote means that Macbeth killed banquo his close friend to stay king. He was supposed to be at that dinner but he is not. Macbeth sees his ghost and goes crazy then lady Macbeth is telling him he is wrong for what he did. Soon she starts to go crazy along with him.

In Act 3, scene 4 Lady Macbeth is talking to Macbeth and talking about how he killed Duncan because now he is killing everyone in his way of him not becoming king.  She says in (Act 3, scene 4, line 63) “ this is the air-drawn dagger which you said led you to Duncan O theses flaws and starts.” This quote means that what led him to kill Duncan is making him kill more and more people. He is killing then messing up which are his flaws then he starts over again. Lady Macbeth is trying to say stop, now her guilt isn’t showing because she is stronger but his is now showing a lot.

In Act five scene 1 lady Macbeth is sleep walking and is washing her hands to get the blood off from when Duncan was killed so she is not caught. Macbeth killed Duncan and when it was done she went and cleaned up. Lady Macbeth got blood all over her hands and could not get it off. (Act 5, scene 1, line 53, page 84). Lady Macbeth says, “ Here’s the smell of the blood still. All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. Oh, oh oh!” This means the blood on lady Macbeths hands is gone but it will she thinks its there because what she did can not be undone, in her mind its still there and nothing will make it go away. This shows she is weak and cannot control what is happening.

In Act five scenes 1 the gentle woman was worried about lady Macbeth so she called a doctor. The doctor has seen lady Macbeth sleepwalking, washing her hands for a long amount of time, speaking to someone and the doctor is interested in what is wrong with her.  Also wants to determine why she is doing this. Aside the gentle women and the doctor are speaking to each other. (Act 5, scene 1, line 53, page 84). “ What a sigh is there. The heart is sorely charged.” This quote means that Lady Macbeth is finally showing her guilt and the truth. She wanted to kill but when it was done, in her mind she didn’t want it to happen. It didn’t show throughout the story but at this stage in the play Lady Macbeth did not choose to show it but in her sleep it came out. At this point the doctor is not sure what is going to happen to her.

That shoes that she is weak towards the end of the book.

In collusion Lady Macbeth has a major change during this play.  Seeing all the quotes and analyzing lady Macbeth through the story you can tell she’s fine in the beginning and broke down in the end. It came back and haunted her. Her plan did not turn out the way she wanted it to.

Why write?

 People should write because it’s good to put your feelings and thoughts d     own on paper if you normally don’t talk about it. Also it gives you the freedom to write about anything you want, Stretch your imagination. It is an amazing talent if you love writing then do it all the time.

A time when I exceeded expectations (someone else’s or my own)....

A time when I exceeded expectations is when my family and friends didn’t think I would sign up for running and be good at it because I am a very lazy person but now I have bin running for 2 years and I most I ever ran was 13 miles and I hope to run a marathon and my friends didn’t think I could do it but I did.

 What makes a good story? What kinds of stories do you like?

I like fiction, fantasy and mystery stories because they are very creative. What makes a good story is when it is descriptive and flows it’s not all over the place. Also when they are not to long but not to short. Sometimes people do not want to read a book because its to long so it being right in the middle would would make a reader more interested in the book but that’s not always the case.

Response to reading/hearing/saying the “n” word...

When I see the “n” word in stories it makes me not want to read the book. I think the word is wrong and should not be used at all. Also the little kid said it and didn’t no what it meant so maybe he might start using it and it don’t turn out good. Some people say it all the time and it doesn’t matter to them because they way its used now like as a friend to friend saying it makes it okay. No using it at all is not okay doesn’t matter what the situation is.

If you really knew me...

If you really knew me you would know that I am not shy at all, I am always talking to someone no matter who or where it is. I always try my best to keep a smile on my face even if I am not happy. If you really knew me you would know that I have bin through so much with family and school. If you really knew me you would know I am the pickiest eater ever!

A time when you wish you could drop a part of your identity...

A time when I wanted to drop a part of my identity was in school and with my friends would make fun of my nose because its big. I was called a couple of different names and it hurt but then I started to get used to it and just laugh along.

For the Macbeth creative we had to take the Q1 benchmark and make a different creative piece that shows the characters change.

The third Benchmark was for the book The Odyssey, we had to write an essay comparing a character from the Odyssey with a character from another author or movie.

Penelope & Bella Comparison Essay

3^rd Quarter English Benchmark

Most people understand or know the feeling of being depressed or abandoned by someone they love. Two girls, Bella and Penelope know that feeling very well. You can get lonely staying away from someone you are really attached to. Bella from the movie twilight is in love with a vampire named Edward. This made things difficult for her. Penelope from the Odyssey is in love with her husband who has been gone for 20 years. What should these girls do? Even though Bella and Penelope’s reuniting with their men was different, their paths were very similar.

Bella and Penelope were both left by their men but the way they got back together was very different. When Odysseus comes back to Ithaca he is not himself.  Odysseus stays disguised as a beggar until the battle between him and the suitors is over. He reveals himself to Penelope but she doesn’t believe him.  Odysseus discusses this with his son Telemachus. “Now because I am filthy wear such grimy rags She spurns me – your mother still can’t bring herself to believe I am her husband” (Page 459, book 23, line 130-133) this shows that Penelope is independent and wants proof herself. Mean while Bella is jumping off a cliff because Edward Is gone thinking it will bring him back. Then she goes after him when he was going to expose himself. That shows that Bella is dependent on Edward. Contrasting, Penelope handled the situation better then Bella.

Being abandoned by your husband or boyfriend for a long period of time hurts.

Penelope and Bella both felt the same when they were. Bella went into zombie mode for months while Edward was gone. She didn’t want to go out with her friends anymore, cried. Penelope kept going back to her room and crying. They both were not themselves. Having this feeling will make anyone’s life different or difficult no matter what the situation is just like Bella and Penelope.

Both characters were depressed about the situation and found a way to stall. Penelope drops hint to the suitors and saying she misses her husband but went along with everything that was happening. This quote from the book shows that she was just going along with everything  “Dangling promises, dropping hints to each – but all the while someone else is mind."(Book 2, lines 99-100) The quote from the Odyssey says that she is now feeling alone even though she says that she is going to marry one of the suitors. Also she weaves a web to stall also. Bella hung out with Jake when Edward wasn’t there but tried to find way to get to him, which was her way of dropping hints. They both have someone that wants to replace their loves. Bella has Jake like the same as Penelope she has the suitors that want her. Whether or not they want to be with them they are trying to take them from their men.

All and all they have walked similar paths. Even though the paths are the same the ending can be totally different. Penelope is independent and mischievous while Odysseus is away for twenty years.  Her idea of weaving a web kept her from answering to the proposals that were being constantly thrown at her. Waiting for her husband, not doing anything to get him. Penelope gets her love back in the end. For Bella however, seeks Edward out in her hallucinations of him as a way to cope with the Cullens’ departure.  She does reckless things to be with Edward in her hallucinations like cliff diving.  Doing that eventually reunites her to Edward.  These characters from to different books all of the four characters are trying to get their love.

For this project we had to pick a Greek god or a goddess and write the math about them. I choose Athena.

Book review

The book I read was I am an Emotional Creature by Eve Ensler. It is a national bestseller.  Bust Magazine loved the book also Seventeen Magazine thought it was not just a new must read book it is the start of a whole new movement. The Los Angeles times thought it was powerful.

This book is fictional monologues written by Eve Ensler inspired by teenage girls everywhere. It’s about girls who don’t fit in, have problems at home, or eating disorders everything a teenage girl can possibly go through. There are no main characters its just all about girls. The conflict in the book is that Eve Ensler wants everyone to be who they are and not be scared of it but the reader needs to finish the book and understand it to find out who they are. The theme I think that fits this book is be yourself no matter what. What I think the readers should take away from is book is that everyone has problems and if you have someone there for you or someone who has the same issue you can get through it and live your life happy.

I can relate to one of the monologues in the story that’s called The joke about my nose the reason I can relate to this is because I have a big nose and I was made fun of for it from some people and that is what was happening to the girl. To solve her problem she got a nose job and when it was over she realized that nose made her who she is.  I felt the same way she did trying to figure out that my nose was a part of me other people had to accept it.

I loved this book so much because Eve really tried to connect with the girls and the readers and I feel as though it worked for me and hopefully every other girl that read it.  Strengths about the book is that it was broken into sections which made it easy to read. Eve put girl facts after a couple of monologues to keep the reader interested in the topics. Also the part that I liked the most is the beginning before the book starts she wrote a letter to the readers and then an introduction I think that that made the book so much better.  I didn’t think there were any weaknesses in this book.

If I could change something about this book I would want to make it a sequel like the other books she published. 

I would recommend the book to girls especially. If you really like to learn about people around the world and what’s going on then it’s a good book for you. Also if you think you have something wrong with you read this book, it will help you out a lot.

In my previous blogs I wanted to know about why people do this to the animals and the research that I just found gave me some reasons why they do this. Some act on sadistic desires, some act unintentionally, some harming pets with there carelessness. One of the main topics why is systemic the choices we make as a collective. People abuse children’s pets to coerce them into sexual abuse or to keep the children quiet about them the parent’s crudity to them. Also the children harm the animals because they want to take our there anger on another victim.

Ways you can help if you know this is happening or not, help the organizations retrieve the animals left behind. If you know someone who cannot take care of there pet find someone who can or call an animal association. If people have problems with animals try and help them through it, everything you do helps.

Pets are a big part of people lives did you know that a child in the U.S is more likely to have a pet then live stay at home father. Did you know that most American Homes have pets then children? Did you know every year 100 million animals die in experiments and tests? Did you know that 70% of the abusers also committed other crimes?  The Internet is one of the biggest sources to find out facts about this topic. This still will be happening even if we are saving some. So if more people know then they can help to. This is my last blog post there was two more about animal cruelly, what I should do is continue my research and find out more because this an strong topic and not only is it with animals but also with children and it should stop now.

The research that I focused on is an animal rescue center called the ASPCA. The reason I am writing about this is because it is one of the biggest teams to help fight animal cruelty. In 2005 they started this team when hurricane Katina happened. It is a group of staff that help animals with all different problems that are natural and man made disasters. The team works with other groups to rescue animals and give them the care that they need. You can adopt animals from the ASPCA, learn how to take better care of your pet, donate and learn ways to get involved to stop it.

The ASPCA happy tails is when they tell you about stories of animals how they were saved and what happened to them. I have got into that pacifically because I wanted to know what was going on with the animals, I didn’t just want to know that there was animals getting hurt I wanted to everything about the situation.

For example there is a dog-named Mercury. His owner was a dog fighter. The ASPCA suspected that he was a dog fighter and the owner kept them in tiny cages in a yard. The man did the only thing he came do at that point was tell him to put his dogs in bigger crates and took photos of the dogs. Mercury caught the mans eyes and knew he would save him one day. The owner winded up putting the animals in a vacant apartment. The men Ruiz got them out right away and bring them to the ASPCA. Now he is healthy and ready to be adopted.

You don’t want that happening to other animals and neither do I? I don’t know why people did it in the first place but that’s what I want to know.

For this project you and the World we are picking an issue that is happening in the world that you are interested in researching and learning more about. The issue I am doing is animal abuse. The reason I am doing this is because I love animals. My opinion about this is that I will not eat them or hurt them and its wrong that other people do.

Animals should be treated just like a person, You wouldn’t want anyone hurting you well around the world there are people abusing animals and its wrong. Cruelty to animals should be a crime in all states. The use of animals for testing in laboratories has recently become an issue. Some things that are happening are Killing, injures, neglect, or cruel mistreatment.

I wonder what the people are thinking when they are doing all these things to animals. What’s going through there minds? Also why are they doing it?

Are there a lot of people out there trying to stop it?  How do you think the animal feels? Next I am going to look at different organizations that are trying to stop it and read about different animals and what there stories are.

For this project you and the World we are picking an issue that is happening in the world that you are interested in researching and learning more about. The issue I am doing is animal abuse. The reason I am doing this is because I love animals. My opinion about this is that I will not eat them or hurt them and its wrong that other people do.

Animals should be treated just like a person, You wouldn’t want anyone hurting you well around the world there are people abusing animals and its wrong. Cruelty to animals should be a crime in all states. The use of animals for testing in laboratories has recently become an issue. Some things that are happening are Killing, injures, neglect, or cruel mistreatment.
