Business Unit Reflection

Partner: Sam Lovett-Perkins

1. We chose to do a political cartoon because we both felt we could get creative with the idea of one. By doing this, we brought both of our strengths together to produce something we thought would be a good visual representation of the points we thought were most important in the business unit.
2. EQ: What cause systemic and individual change?
Decision and action cause both systemic and individual change; decisions are made on the account of an individual and the actions made by the individual affect both the individual's system and the individual themselves. In changing the system, the individual is also changed.
3. I want to know how some American businesses become corporate; it seems a long to go.

World of 100 Analysis

1. My answers tend to be really off, because I tend to think of the good as too good and the bad as too bad.

2. What really shocked me the most was the access to drinking water, i would've never guessed that 87% of people have clean water to drink.

3. But soon I predict that clean water levels will drop due to pollution, and that sooner or later everyone will have a cellphone in the world no matter how poor

What is the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change ?

Over the years Obama has caused tremendous change in our country. Even though people have doubted him since the get go he has come a very long way and has been able to mantain it. He is an example of an individual who is able to create change and sustain it. He gave people HOPE, caused CHANGE, and made PROGRESS.

Looking at these graphs its interesting what the demographics are and who "matters" in the world. If you compared my predictions with the real answers they weren't that far apart so I was pretty accurate. I was really surprised with the literacy graph because it the male statistics were better than I expected because I was always told that females did more than males so I figured they wouldn't want to learn or couldn't learn. I was sort of proud of myself because I wasn't really way off on any category.

I picked Geography, Age, and Religion

There was only one where I was closer than other. The Age section, I was only off by a couple of number but it was the closest prediction I made. Some of the answer I gave could be inaccurate because of my views, I dont know much about the Asian culture, so I figure I would be off in trying to determine numbers. I also didn't believe their was a lot of christian, but the correct answer saying there are more christain then I predicted, I always thought there was more hindu and buddhist in the world. I also for some reason thought that North American and Asian would be equal...but common sense should have told me that Asian has more

My graphs are done on paper.

Business Unit Reflection

1.Explain your choice of presentation

- Sasha and I decided to make a poster with the three presidents side by side with a picture of each and an explanation of their individual hope or change for America. We chose to do a poster because we wanted it to be lively and got the message out.

2.Two sentences answering your EQ: What causes systemic and individual change?

- Systemic changes require everyone's voice and contribution. It has a lot of barriers for a big problem to be solved and for an individual change, it's either the result or it proceeds systematic change, because it involves a person to look at themselves, and the problem before them, which leads a choice that has to be made to be made for the greater good.

3. What questions do you still have about business in America?

- How would creating smaller business help the major debt that the US government is entitled to?

World of 100- TJ Nicolella

This first graph (above) shows the amount of people in the world that are of certain ages. I believed that if the world was made up of 100 people, most of them would be middle aged. I was right in predicting this, followed by the prediction that the second largest group of people would be young, followed by seniors. All of my predictions for this category were correct and this seems to make sense because there are many countries that have life expectancies that are below the age of the last category (65+).

This second graph showcases the amount of people that speak each language throughout the world. In this category, most of my predictions were way off when compared to how languages are actually split up within the globe. My prediction for the amount of people that speak Chinese was more than 1/5 of the Earth, while in actuality, the amount is much lower. When I looked at Chinese, I must have grouped it together with Mandarin and/or Taiwanese which would have made the number much larger. For the other languages, besides English, I actually just had no clue as to what amount of people would be speaking each language because I never really thought about the topic. I just assumed that every language that seemed Asian would have had a larger population of people speaking it.

The last graph shown (above) is comparing the amount of people that live in urban areas as opposed to rural areas throughout the world. I am not exactly sure why I thought about 3/4 of the earth lives in an urban environment. I guess I thought that most of the world was made up of a city environment like China and much of the United States. However, I was not thinking about the majority of Asia and Africa that vastly add to the percentage of the population that lives in a rural environment.

The majority of my answers were close to the correct answer but there were others that strayed very far from the correct numbers, especially in the language category. I think this assignment gives me a clear view of how I perceived the world, along with my class. Having lived in a city my whole life, it's hard to picture what the rest of the world could be living in/going through when only really seeing one point of view.

Ryan Harris Business Unit Reflection

Monologue Series

Theodore Roosevelt

During my presidency I noticed something that I couldn’t quite understand. I noticed a massive range of businesses who controlled such a high quantity of manufacturing from things like railroads, oil, and even meat. With meat, for example, I sent out a friend of mine to a meat packing industry. His response letter back painted a horrible picture. He saw that dead animals thrown aside and lighting conditions were terrible. Yet with these terrible conditions, the investors of these companies are doing extremely well. This needed to be changed, I couldn’t outright eliminate these companies, but instead control their actions. These monopolies can’t be good for America. In reaction to that, I’ve enlisted many antitrust acts to break up these giant superpowers. A notable one was the Standard Oil Trust. We were able separate the conglomerate that was Standard Oil, into much small companies. This way there was no longer one massive force controlling simply one object.

Franklin D. Roosevelt

During my presidency our country was one of its worst points: The Great Depression. The economy was downtrodden and jobs for the average American was an adventure in  and of itself. So when I became president I proposed a “New Deal” of sorts for my fellow American citizens. First I started the Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration to somehow bring life into America and get this economy back to what it was. But that wasn’t enough to save the American people from where they were. I also created the Wagner Act and Fair Labor Standards Act to instill more organized labor into America with things like minimum wage.

Barack Obama

In presidency, I noticed that American companies have made a major mistake. In recent years, they’ve outsourced their work to foreign countries such as China. Well why? Well I think we’ve all figured out by now, it’s simply because it is cheaper to give the jobs to foreigners who well work for much cheaper. This needs to stop. Today in America, Americans are struggling to find jobs in a economy trying to come out of a recession. To solve I propose this to American companies who outsource, bring the jobs back to America! American companies should have American workers shouldn’t they? Instead of focusing more on a profit, American companies should focus on advancing the economy back to it’s majesty. Outsourcing isn’t going to be thing that gets America out of this recession.

Reflection

1. Explain your choice and presentation format.

- I chose a monologue format because I was working alone and wanted to just represent myself as the three presidents in a sort sequential order.

2. Answer essential question.

- I think it takes a serious injustice in the eyes of the individual in to create lasting change within a system. When someone as powerful as the president himself sees great injustices, he has everything in his powerful to see this change come through.

Sierra's Project / BUSINESS UNIT REFLECTION

I chose to use a keynote because I feel like it's easier to display my ideas in a way that the viewer can understand. It's also very good with showing different visuals, and if presented correctly, can get a lot of attention.

I feel like the individual needs to be able to persuade others that change is needed. More often then ever people are opposed to change, even if it’s in their best interest.

I feel like I still don't know how America as a whole feels about this topic.

Palacio Nacional **Por Diego Rivera**__Perspectivo de Pedro Machuca

Yo soy Pedro Machuca y tengo once años.

1.Explain your choice of presentation

-We (Natalee and I) chose a video because we wanted to be creative. We both never done a video for history class so we figured to do something new. We also felt that it would (having made a video) better express out information we had about the presidents and their policies in relations with the government to make change.

2.Two sentences answering your EQ

"What causes systematic and individual change?"

-Systematic change happens when the country of that system is suffering and needs change for the better. Individual change is of the president (in this scenario) to reflect on their actions to do what's right for that country and providing stability.

3. What questions do you still have about business in America?

-Will businessmen/women, those who are the 1%, ever pay their fair share of taxes?

World of 100

For my three charts, i chose to focus on gender, urban/rural, and geography. If you compared my predictions with the real answers they weren't that far apart so I was pretty accurate. I was really surprised with the literacy graph because it the male statistics were better than I expected because I was always told that females did more than males so I figured they wouldn't want to learn or couldn't learn.  I was surprised that the Urban and Rural dwellers are almost equal, I thought that since there was much more space rurally but less people to each space, much more people would live in cities.

Doing this assignment completely changed my mindset about things. I started to see the importance in this more so. I always thought that the U.S and China were the only two advanced countries. I didn't expect to see that majority of the world would be advancing being as though a lot of other seek or seem to need help from other countries.

Fidel castro - Estefan carrillo

1.Explain your choice of presentation
Mike and I chose this form of presentation because it was the coolest and best way to do it. We could connect different parts of history. We can show some presidencies, compare and contracts them in cool ways and this style is really easy on the eyes.

2.Two sentences answering your EQ
What is the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change?
The role of an individual in creating change is huge. As we know, History repeats its self. So, we will need one person to do something bold to make a change for good and have good things repeat and not bad. As, in the great depression one person had changed our business systems with numerous polices and acts that ultimately brought the United States out of a depression.

3. What questions do you still have about business in America?

none.

1.Explain your choice of presentation

For our choice of presentation we decided to do a lucidchart. (Me and Mohamad) THe reason we choice the lucid chart is because we thought it would be the best in comparing the economic changes in the 3 presidents and how they changed the economic standpoint and made the country better. The chart basically compares what each leader did and each President takes control for the better.

2.Two sentences answering your EQ

What is the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change?

What the individual does in sustaining change is change the bad and twist it around into good. They react to the struggles, reform a new system that would set the countrys standards for log periods of time revolutionize the Predency

Ashley's World of 100 Analysis

Estimated Literacy
Estimated Literacy
Analysis: It appears that I was the closest to the correct answer in the first graph on the left, labeled “Literate Men” than in the other three. I was actually more accurate than the class average. However in the next three graphs, for “Illiterate Men”, “Literate Women” and “Illiterate Women” my estimations were way off. For categories “Illiterate men”, my answer was closer to the correct answer but only because the class average’s estimation was more off than mine. For “Literate Women” my answer fell just under that of the class averages’ and they both fell very short of the correct answer. For “Illiterate Women” my answer was the most incorrect, the correct answer was so much less than that of both the class average and my answer. I found it interesting that our class as a whole thought that there would be much less of a gap between illiterate women and men.

Estimated World Language

Estimated Literacy

Analysis: For this graph I noticed that the class average was always pretty off, but we were the most off for the category labeled “Speak other languages” located at the end on the right. My answer was closest to the correct answer for the number of people who would speak Chinese, Hindustani and Bengali. I over shot the majority of the languages; I based my numbers off of the most popular languages that are taught in schools in America today. It turns out that the most popular would be Chinese, Malay-Indonesian and other languages. This category proved to be the one that the class as a whole was the most off, which is also shown on the next graph.

Estimated Secondary Language

Estimated Secondary Education

Analysis: My estimations were pretty dead on, for each section my answer fell either just under or just above the correct answer. The class average stayed around the same number (50) even though the categories changed. For example, Men with Secondary Education, the class average fell just under fifty, and Men without Secondary Education the class average fell right at fifty. I think that it’s interesting that the class average doesn’t change as far as secondary education between women and men.

All categories:

All categories chart

Part 4: My most inaccurate category was Language, I was way off, and my most accurate category was Secondary Education. I’m not quite sure why I was much more accurate for secondary education than the other categories. But Like I said earlier, I have a hunch that the reason that I was so inaccurate for Language was because I used my own general understanding about popular languages. I only used the most popular languages taught in the United States, I didn’t factor in to languages taught in other places in the world. Since these charts would reflect the whole world that probably didn’t help me in the end. The answer that shocked me the most was how many people would speak other languages, the class average and my answer was both estimated that 5%-10% of the world would speak languages that weren’t listed when in actuality 51.8%, that’s half of the world who would speak languages that weren’t listed. I was surprised at how many languages I didn’t know existed/ account for. I showed me how limited my knowledge was about languages, since I would like to become a translator in the future I was really taken back by how inaccurate my numbers turned out being (especially because that was the one section I felt most confident in). Overall my numbers were pretty off I think that happened because I haven’t been paying as much attention to current events that have been happening in the world. I do find the majority of these categories interesting, but I haven’t been paying as much attention as I could be and will do more often.

Business Unit Reflection- Trosario- Earth

Explain your choice of Presentation Format:
I chose power point because it was easier to present and I would have to send a lot of time learning how to use t and could use my time for the actual presentation.

Two sentences of you answer to the questions:

My answer was that the individual during certain decades had the main say in bills that were passed, but now it takes many other steps to get the idea of change to be considered.

What questions do you still have about Business in America?

I would like to know what the process of change is like in other countries and why our system of change was ratified.

Due to issues with uploading a power point I have used the voice overs and images and created a iMovie instead.

María Luisa Infante. El Cargador de Flores

Machuca Project

Ruben Burenstein

Business in America Reflection

They call it your responsibility, an obligation, a calling. They surround you with descriptions and depictions of this dream of red, white and blues failing to mention this alternate dimension, this place , this time where only the lies are fed to you free and living is a business breathing is paid for nothing is what it seems and being on the inside doesn't give any more information than what they provide and with all the power in the world and still they are cowards they hide through loop holes and back door deals. And now its your responsibility, an obligation, a calling to change what you know is wrong and sir they'll call you a bigger hero than hercules strength does not come in hundreds of men and their muscles but instead they're voices being heard. See that is the key to creating sustaining maintaining a beautiful day of new. Just listen for a second and promises were never meant to be broken and a wise man once "Behind the ostensible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people."

1. I chose a poem format because out of all the things I had learned about Theodore Roosevelt the one thing that stood out to me was how personal he took what he did and although he took the countries problems to heart this unit showed the complete opposite of that. I thought that it would resemble the business unit in the sense that it does in fact contradict business but completely resembles Theodore Roosevelt and all he stood for. To me, it was just a personal touch. However, apart from the sentimental points, I chose to do a poem because it gave me the ability to weave in my sources in a unique way for example, a cartoon of Teddy Roosevelt feeding his cat "Trusty" a bowl of "Protection" inspired the line "only the lies are fed to you free" whereas the more famous cartoon of Teddy Roosevelt as baby Hercules inspired the line "they'll call you a bigger hero than hercules". Although those are the main direct links to my sources the overall poem was inspired by a general overview of the information I had learned and the other sources I collected.

2. If the role of people in a democracy is to appoint a leader for change then the role of that individual is to listen and expand on their voices. To sustain this change not only does this individual need to rise to their role but the democracy as a whole needs to stand as one.

3.How does the business in America affect those in power?

Business Reflection Unit

I chose to present my reflection through the form of a power point. Using the format of a ppt. presentation I was able to clearly convey a central topic, and historical events that helped support the overall theme of the presentation. For the observer, I wanted them to be able to be drawn directly to F.D.R, as he had great significance in developing change in the United States, during one of the country's most struggling times. The vivid color (green) was used almost as away to display the hope that F.D.R restored in the United States people. The first page encompasses the most important thing that was created by and under F.D.R's presidency, The New Deal. With the central point being a picture  of an old New Deal flyer, with a brief description of it's primary function. After that in both directions, two pictures follow. One of the CCC or Civilian Conservation Corps. And another that is an advertisement for the Social Security Act. Both were pivotal additions to the United States foundation, and helped the country greatly during the time of the Great Depression.

Going a little deeper than what we learned in class, I believe that F.D.R was/is the greatest example for assessing the role of an individual in creating and sustaining change. If one were to look at F.D.R's case of polio, they could see that the president had to strive to be strong for his people, to give them a hope in themselves. Many things were held into affect even after F.D.R's death, and many presidents should strive to be more like Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the future. His own will and courage propelled F.D.R to lead the U.S through the great depression, becoming one of the most beloved presidents ever known. Not only dead he begin fighting the depression with the New Deal, but he sustained the effects of the New Deal, always putting in hope of the American people.
