Final Stamp Design

My image represents me because it shows a combination of my interests and passions and it also reflects my personal aesthetic. The words I chose to create my stamp were, adventurous, movies, flowers and simplicity.  I love all types of art, but in particular I love simple minimalistic designs, and thats what I created in my stamp. In my cut out you can see three distinct sectors, the top and middle are meant to represent a sunset, and the bottom sector features a mountain range. Inside the mountain range is a simple rose design. My image also encompasses two suns, one in the top section and one in the middle, these two suns represent my love for movies and hint at the two suns in star wars’ Tatooine. The rose represents my love for flowers and the mountain range/sunset shows my passion for adventure.

When we first started learning about negative and positive space, I was confused and i had a hard time telling the two apart, but once we started cutting and making prints on our own it all came together for me. This project in particular really helped me get the hang of negative and positive space, and I feel that that skill is represented in my work. I used this skill to separate the sectors clearly, and to create an interesting balance in my image. For example one of my suns is in the positive and one is in the negative, this affect allows the viewer to clearly see the contrast in my design. Overall I feel that this project helped train my eyes to see the difference between negative and positive space. It also helped me create a unique design that reflects my personality.

Minors Running Away

For my final english one project we were assigned the You and The World (Y&TH) project. The purpose of this project is to learn about a current event that connects to ourselves and raise awareness about the topic by researching and making a positive change based off of the new information learned about the topic of our choosing . For my project I decided to do the DC crisis about the missing Black and Latina girls. In DC the new commander of the Metropolitan Police Department posted pictures of the missing girls and made the hashtag #MissingDCGIrls. Knowing social media is an outlet  to spread news quickly in the 21st century , the hashtag got around to many people all over the country. According to an article found on the Cable News Network Social media responded with outrage that not enough was being done to find the children by law enforcement” I chose this current event because I am a young Black female in this society and to know that young girls just like me are missing and no one was putting as much effort as they could to find them makes me furious. As my research continued I soon found out that the DC crisis wasn't a crisis. By researching the topic more I learned that the commander was just raising awareness of the missing girls. My research has brought me to a extened issue. My official issue is minors running away from home. Minors running away from home is an equally important current event but studies show that there has been no spark in missing persons in DC.

Based off the research I have done so far minors that run away are running from something or someone. There are many reasons on why minors run away from home. A very important thing that young people don't know is that running away is illegal. Most people don't know that running away is illegal , when a minor gets caught running away police can take a them into custody and it will result in having to go to family court. My research so far has impacted me because it taught me new facts about a subject that matters to me, that not a lot of people know enough about. Something that is important to fix this problem is focusing on what is making minors run away. If we focus on who or what is making minors run away as a whole community everyone could help face the problem head on. For the rest of my upcoming research I will be looking into ways to stop minors from running away. Also I will be looking at organizations that help minors get through issues that may lead them to running away. Stay tuned for a second blog post about minors running away. For more information look at my annotated bibliography.

Negative Space and Positive Space

20170510_083027-01.jpeg

  1. Negative Space is the area of an image that is not part of the main image(Center Image)

  2. I found the negative space by finding the image then identifying the areas that are not the image.

  3. It gives them more skill as a photographer or drawer because it develops the skill of finding the center image.

  4. Yes, because it makes it much easier to find the center image.

Everything Wrong With the Fast and Furious Franchise

The original The Fast and the Furious, back in 2001, was a poorly made summer film in which Paul Walker and Vin Diesel did a lot of driving, yelling, and dirty looks. The plot was only there to support the film’s many street racing scenes, where there was no real display of skill except for that generated by CGI. The Fast and Furious movies are all very exaggerated and unrealistic.

In the sequel, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Walker went solo and the film itself was basically a copy of the first one with way more up misogyny. For example, in the first race scene, Paul walker and 3 other characters (never seen again after the race scene.) are preparing to race. The camera focuses on the car of the only black driver in the race as a barely dressed woman walks up to him. She takes his hand and puts it on her breast and says, “this is your win or lose. But if you win, you get her too” she points at another poorly dressed woman. This scene is also slightly racist as only the black man has the longing for women.

After  2 more stereotypical street racing movies, the fifth installment in the series, Fast Five, earned an oddly large amount of positivity and good reviews, even from those who has previously disliked the movies. Fast Five is “certified fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, with 77% positive reviews, and critics saying that it :injects new life into the franchise.

Fast Five begins where the fourth film, Fast and Furious left off. After helping Dom escape from a prison bus, Brian and his girlfriend who happens to be Dom’s sister Mia move to Rio to hide out. However, as soon as they arrive they get involved with a crazy theft supercars from a moving passenger train which ends with Dom and Paul driving a car off a 100 foot tall cliff and jumping into a lake right before impact without a scratch. After this, a typical tough-guy DSS (diplomatic security special agent), played by the rock comes into play, causing the main characters a lot of difficulty throughout the movie. Meanwhile, they discover that the theft was not for the cars, but for a small chip inside one of the cars with  details of a dangerous drug cartel. When Dom and Brian realize how rich the cartel’s leader is, they decide to stage a daring heist.

Here’s where the story gets interesting. We see the standard heist movie scenes of gathering a crew, planning the heist, talking about what they’ll do with their cut, and then towards the end of the movie, we find out that we never really knew what the whole plan included. The train chase scene that op Fast Five is well made and gripping for the audience. So is its closing heist, where two cars pull a huge vault around the streets of Rio, wreaking havoc all along the way. There’s a car chase scene towards the beginning of  Furious 6 that is also very well made. The closing scene, that includes the gang stopping the antagonists from escaping on a plane, is also a good scene.

Even though these movies do have gripping scenes, most of them are very unrealistic and cartoon like. For example, The Rock falls almost 15 feet onto the top of a car, then is launched from it, and lands in the middle of the road, then starts shooting at the car without showing any evidence of injury. Vin Diesel jumps from one car to another to save Letty, and makes it look like ha can fly and land on a car 15 feet away while holding letty without a scratch. Most importantly, the final action scene with the plane chase takes about 15 minutes, meaning the runway had to be at least 100 miles long.

Here’s the primary concern, all of the movies have two well crafted and gripping action scenes(beginning and end), but the meat of the movies is just a bunch of tough-guy nonsense. Both films run about two hours and ten minutes, and there's just no reason for that,  because that means lots of scenes of things going boom, yes, but that also means lots of scenes of people talking to each other, and those scenes tend to bore an audience of an action movie.

This is my best 2fer ever, because I put a lot of work into this one. I researched for hours and watched a lot of the Fast and Furious movies to analyze them. This also took me way longer than it should have, because I wanted to make sure it was crisp and well said.

Boys Ultimate Makes States!

The Boys Ultimate team qualified for the State Championships on Sunday with dramatic wins over Holy Ghost Prep and Upper Merion High School! SLA won both games with sudden death scores to win 11-10, but the games were dramatically different stories.

Against Holy Ghost, the Rockets jumped out to a 7-3 lead at half, with the defensive zone creating turnover after turnover. The offense was getting everyone involved, with six different players scoring the seven goals. But Holy Ghost regrouped at half time and slowly chipped into the lead, tying the game at 10-10 as time expired. But with the game on the line, the offensive squad marched the disc down the field with sophomore Eli Zimmerman throwing to junior Nate Little for the winning goal.

The Upper Merion game tested SLA's mettle as the team found itself down 7-5 at half with both teams fighting for a spot at the State Championships. Upper Merion held the lead and SLA found itself down 10-8 in a game to 11. Facing the need to score three straight points or seeing its goal of making States fade away, the team stepped up and played one of its best stretches of Ultimate of the season. The defense held Upper Merion scoreless, and the offense played flawlessly with junior Eli Block throwing to Nate Little for all three scores to secure a space at States for the Rockets!

SLA will travel to Allentown over Memorial Day weekend to compete against the top 16 teams in the state! Go Rockets!

MP1 Art Blog and Artist Statement

Printmaking is the process of making artworks by printing, normally on paper. The technique of duplicating images goes back several thousand years to the Sumerians who engraved designs and cuneiform inscriptions on cylinder seals. Printmaking originated in China after paper was invented around AD 105. Relief printing appeared in Europe in the 15th Century, when the process of papermaking was imported from the East. Daniel Hopfer decorated armor in this way, and applied the method to printmaking. Etching soon came to challenge engraving as the most popular printmaking medium.

I noticed how the bird has many simple details. There are different shades of blue on the bird feathers. The background is contrasting from the bird. The bird fills up the page and is very eye catching.

Miriam Sachs Capstone

For my Capstone, I choose to focus on social media marketing specifically for YouTube channels. Before starting, I had a YouTube channel I had created years ago where I uploaded art and filmmaking tutorials. This original channel had an unprofessional name and inconsistent branding. The channel had also become jumbled by making videos about both filmmaking and visual arts.  Instead of continuously making new videos each week as I have done for years, I took a break in uploading to create a new channel to put the filmmaking tutorials on. I named the new channel Amity Filmmaking. Amity means friendly relations, and I choose this word after seeing so many filmmaking tutorials that do not keep audience in mind by not explaining terms for beginners or being almost an hour long for something that takes minutes to do. I wanted to make my channel a student centered educational resource instead of just showing what I could do.  In the process, I learned a completely new application, Adobe Illustrator in order to make my own professional logo, channel art, and thumbnails.  I also learned it is okay to take time to make the videos I want instead of just uploading often, since my subscriber numbers on my original channel continued to grow even though I had not uploaded a video in months. It was better to build a professional channel and launch new videos when ready than rush to upload frequently.

Litter on Taney and Bainbridge St.

English 9

You and the World

Philadelphia is made up of thousands of small neighborhoods. Each neighborhood is unique in its own way, however most share one similarity. Many of the streets and sidewalks in Philadelphia have litter spread along them. I live near Taney and Bainbridge Streets, and it is hard not to notice the trash that is carelessly discarded. The city of Philadelphia has trash trucks that go down our street every Monday morning.  http://www.philadelphiastreets.com/sanitation/residential/. Philadelphia Streets department has a Litter Cabinet that is supposed to reduce trash in neighborhoods http://www.philadelphiastreets.com/zero-starts-with-one/ . But I have never heard anything about them in my neighborhood before. So I think that Not In Philly is a more effective program http://notinphilly.org/. first moved into this neighborhood in the Summer of 2012. It was beautiful and clean thanks to a few of our neighbors who really cared for and supported our neighborhood. They would go out on the street almost every day and pick up the trash, keeping it a healthy place to live. After a few years of living here, some of those neighbors moved out and were soon replaced by new ones. These newcomers were not like the previous ones who left. Instead they lived an unhealthy lifestyle of smoking cigarettes and drinking. They dropped their cigarette butts out on the streets when they were done, leaving a mess behind. In addition, when they put their trash cans or bags outside for the garbage pick up, and they toppled over, they did not pick them up, or pick up the trash that had been left behind. A few years ago construction for CHOP towers began and is still going on to this day. The demolition of some of the nearby factories, the dust, and the litter of the construction workers increased the existing garbage.

During this past MLK day, my family and I went to clean up the streets with trash grabbers and trash bags that were given to us by a nonprofit organization, called Not in Philly.  Not in Philly was started by a family friend of ours, who wanted to help make Philly a better place to live.  We were some of the only ones to pick up the trash while a few neighbors just stood on their door step and watched. We also had the chance to share about Not in Philly with one of our neighbors when he asked what we were doing, and he sounded interested.

There are two reasons, in my opinion, that our neighborhood has become messier and litter filled. First, some of the newer neighbors (mostly in rental properties) do not seem to care about keeping the neighborhood clean.  Second, there is ongoing construction in three places  in our neighborhood, which leads to increased dirt and litter. Our new neighbors on both Taney and Bainbridge streets have contributed to the problem and it is getting worse. This is a negative and damaging situation happening in the community and this affects all the people in the area because it may influence the current people and the future generations in the neighborhood that it is okay to leave litter our streets. This would continue to make Taney and Bainbridge an unhealthy and non-beautiful place to live. Also, the increase in the amount of pollution on Taney and Bainbridge will increase the inhabitants chances of sickness and disease.

Negative Space Cut Out

What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

  • Negative space is something to do with art. It is the space behind or the background of an image or a object.

Explain how you found negative space in your cut out?

  • The negative space in my cut out was the darker part of the picture and it was also the background too.

Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

  • Yes it helps an artist to see the negative space because it is the background and the the darkest part of the image in it.

Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

  • Yes negative space enhances the drawings because it brings out the main picture or the object or item. It puts that object at the center of attention when it needs to be.

Prince Scheme? or Akeem

Visual Essay

Prince Scheme? Or Akeem?

Comparing The Taming of the Shrew  to Coming to America

In “The Taming of the shrew” characters prove that sometimes in order to successfully win over a lover one may sometimes have to undergo sly tactics, before eventually settling down. In fact during Act 1 of the play Lucentio and Tranio make a plan to roleplay identities in order to win over Bianca. Which is what also happens to occur in the 1988 Romantic comedy “Coming to America” in which, Prince Akeem and Semmi, ditch their status from their wealthy country in Africa, in order to pursue the likes of Lisa a girl a works at a fast food place in Brooklyn.

“Tranio: Nay then tis’ time to stir him from his trance.- I pray, awake, sir! If you love the maid, Bend thoughts and wits to achieve her thus it stands.”

Act 1  Scene 1 Page 43.

In this scene suggests that Luciento takes a different route in order to pursue Bianca. Luciento describes to him his feelings for Bianca from a first glimpse and for what the most part the feelings were pretty passionate, or better yet, “Love at first sight”. Yet Tranio feels as if since he feels so strong, taking the normal way wouldn’t be nearly as successful.

Prince Akeem has already settled down in America, after a searching for the “most beautiful” women in Brooklyn he stumbles across a girl named Lisa at his new job as a janitor at a McDowells.

Screenshot 2017-05-02 at 4.17.03 PM.png

In the movie Prince Akeem is from a extremely wealthy country called Zamunda that is ran by his royal family. Akeem has literally never had to work a day in his life, and it’s evident when the McDowells manager literally has to explain to him what a mop is. On top of this he even has bills with his face printed on them, meaning that by no means necessary is there a reason for him to be holding broom sweeping floors at a fast food restaurant, in the rough part of Brooklyn. Now originally his purpose for working at the McDowells was too get accustomed to the Brooklyn lifestyle. However his reason changed once he laid eyes on another employee named Lisa which he would describe as “Love at first sight”. Which he then decides to continue working at the job throughout the movie. This goes to show the lengths to how far Akeem is willing to go in order to pursue this idea of romantic love. To be able to drop your royal status, living in a palace and being treated by servants daily, to having to dress in a burger place uniform and sweep floors is a sacrifice that only someone in love would take try to take the risk. Not to mention the fact the Lisa is already seeing another man, which adds to the complications of the relationship with Akeem due to the fact that he’s never has to chase a girl in his life.

“ Hortensio: Petruchio, shall I then come roundly to thee and wish thee to a shrewd ill-favored wife? Thou’dst thank me but a little for my counsel and yet I’ll promise thee she shall be rich and very rich. But thou’rt too much my friend and I’ll not wish thee to her.”

Act 1 Scene 2 Page 53

In this scene Hortensio is discussing the reasonings to Petruchio as to why marrying Kathrine isn’t exactly the best idea, outside of the money. Petruchio being the only person in the story actually interested in getting Kathrine almost argues that the reason to why that is not a problem is because of the fact that there’s real love involved.

During this scene in Coming to America, Prince Akeem and Lisa have dinner over their bosses house Cleo McDowell at which Akeem finally decides to propose to Lisa. However she rejects him, and in comes Sweets bearing flowers.  Lisa finally realizes that he was not a lunatic in a sense that he was not lying about being a Prince in Zamunda, after he reveals a bill with his face on it and makes his exit back to Zamunda, in order for him to marry the woman his father has originally arranged for him.  Screenshot 2017-05-02 at 4.30.49 PM.png

Akeem spends months in Brooklyn before making his final choice to propose. However before this heartbreaking scene there was multiple tactics he has to get the outcome he wanted. The first, and most common one was his usage of Semmi. Throughout the whole movie, who is supposed to be Akeem’s advisor is forced to also drop his status and undergo role playing as well in order to assist Akeem. The event that ends up triggering Semmi the worst is when Akeem forces Semmi to pretend to be amazed be Akeem’s royal presence in the movie line in order to convince Lisa of his greatness. Throughout the whole movie Semmi is against the idea of Prince having to go through such a process so different from his royal routine, not just for the his sake But because of the fact that it was the task given to him by the King himself Akeem’s father, meaning that if things were to fail Semmi would be the one to blame. Well Not only does he get in some trouble when the King decides to make an appearance in Brooklyn and is immediately disgusted by the lifestyle to two of them live. Akeem doesn’t even manage to get the outcome that he wants which for a moment puts the two in an awkward situation. Until the final scene of the movie during the wedding arranged for Akeem and his unwanted wife,he lifts the veil to kiss her, to find out that it’s Lisa instead of his arranged partner. The movie ends on a positive happy ending. Yet, the process to get there proves to be not as reliable as one would think.

“His name! As if I knew not his name! I have brought him up ever since he was three years old, and his name is Tranio.”

Act 2

Screenshot 2017-05-01 at 9.16.07 AM.png

Lastly, there is a clear difference in what comes into play between Prince Akeem’s and Lucentio’s chase for love. However both share the same struggle of defying their father’s expectations. Lucentio’s having the expectation of going into a new city in order to study, yet instead he attempts to find love. On the other side Prince Akeem was born into a royal family so finding a wife shouldn’t exactly by the most difficult. However he’s forced to marry the women within his country who are all pretty much handed to him since birth. These women all clearly gorgeous, don’t interest him simply because it’s not the romantic love he’s looking for so he flees the country in search for love. Which clearly upsets the kings because he’s set everything up for him.

The fact that they both end up having to go against their father’s expectations, which is from the very start already schemish tactic. However looking at this through a deeper meaning of Love and romance. Both characters eventually become successful in their “love chases”  while also deceiving their lovers in order to win them over. Which is interesting because ideally honesty and trust fall under romantic love. Yet there’s something about hiding all the bad or unattractive qualities that doesn’t technically qualify is breaking trust.

Just like humans different animals can feel a vast varieties of emotions. Whether it's sadness over another animal's death or joy and comfort over finding a meal, animals are just as capable of feeling just as much as we are. This is the reason why dogs can be so loyal so some humans and territorial towards others. The reason certain animals tend to be more loyal is they can express different emotions.

Much like humans animals are capable of attaching emotions to objects and other animals. A study done by RSPCA has recently looked into how animals are capable of forming friendships with each other. For their study they used fish and were able to find that they form bonds with each other. “The researchers discovered that being in a group gives zebrafish a kind of “social buffering” so they are less afraid when confronted by danger”. The “social buffering” the study is talking about is something that humans also do. The effect these fish feel is often what we call strength in numbers.

Our understanding of how animals think and feel was once very crude and reasonably so as we were trying to understand how ourselves work. Over the past 200 years the understanding of the human mind has changed immensely. Over the past 70 years the understanding of animals minds have grown massively yet we continue to treat animals the same way instead of changing. “although captivity is known to cause profound emotional trauma to large mammals such as orcas and elephants, entertainment venues continue to keep these animals on display”. This quote shows us how the understanding of the animal's mind has changed but not the treatment. We are aware that captivity can cause “profound emotional trauma”  yet we continue to keep them there knowing that if something like this was done to a human it would be unethical.

While our understanding of neither the human or animal brain will never be complete and can still continuously learn from them. If we can change the way we treat other humans because of our advancements in knowledge then why can't we change our treatment of animals knowing that they have emotions of their own.

Over the course of english 3 I have written my 2 fer’s on a number of different topics and have had a varying level of success with these different topics. I have tried different methods for writing these 2 fer’s and have always taken my piers advice on editing. The reason I think this would be my best 2 fer is because I took into account all of my peers suggestions and wrote about a topic that I am extremely invested in.
