Globalization Benchmark (Link & Reflection)

The most challenging part of the benchmark was relating some the Philadelphia-related photos to globalization. Some of the photos and scenarios in Philadelphia related to certain topics easily, but when you had to relate the photo and the topic to the entire world, that is where is got a little challenging. Sure enough, I successfully and accurately related the photos and topics to the world, but it took a lot of thought and research beforehand.

Luckily, I had several of photos I had all ready captured that were taken in Philadelphia, that related to the globalization topics. I only had to go out and actually capture a few other photos, but for the most part, I all ready captured photos before the project was assigned. I don't know if that was cheating or not, but the pictures that I have all ready taken, were very good photos, and clearly related to globalization. If I were to go out and search for new photos, I don't think the new photos would have matched up to the quality of my previously taken photos.

My favorite image is probably the photo of my cousin getting his first tattoo. The photo is very comical and entertaining, but it also relates to culture, and how body art has been a social norm in the United States, even though tattoos originated in other countries first.

The photos I captured are not that unique to Philadelphia. I am pretty sure I could capture these images in another city in the United States. Nonetheless, the photos still depict globalization.

It's been a wild 4 years here at SLA, but I'm glad to have spent it with everyone here. SInce I came through the doors here at SLA 4 years ago, I thought that I would have it easy.. However, after that first day of freshman year, I was wrong. It was nothing but a hectic ride because I struggled with some of my classes as I am sure some of you have. I also am proud again that I had the opportunity to have been part of the 2011 SLA Rockets Baseball team, even if we loss in the first round of playoffs. Anyway, I wish everyone the best of luck in college and have fun, and I would also like to thank all of the teachers; Past and Present for helping me make it this far in my High-School education. 

Harrison Talese-Rhodes' Q4 Benchmark Reflection

  • What did you find most challenging about this project?
The most challenging part was definitely finding picture that I could use. Once I fully grasped the purpose of the benchmark it was easier to identify things, but it's still a hassle to travel around the city and find the things. I also had a problem with the camera aspect-- namely, I didn't have one. I was forced to use my old camera phone, from which I had to text the pictures to a friend in order to gain access to them on the computer. It was also sort of tough to embellish on the globalization for each topic.
  • How did you go about collecting the images or selecting the images?
I used recommendations from peers, teachers, and my own ideas to assemble a group of appropriate topics as I understand the subject.
  • Which image is your favorite? Why? Elaborate.
I like the picture of the Italian Market sign because I feel it is a perfect example of the topic and I have grown up in that area for my entire life, so it feels really special.
  • How prevalent is the evidence of globalization in Philadelphia? Do you think it is more or less so (evident) than in other large cities in the US? Why Why not?
It is evident in many ways that we don't normally consider, definitely. Any time we use technology or eat food, we are touched by globalization in some way. This project has definitely gotten me thinking about the whole process of product from beginning to end.
