Hey guys! For my senior capstone, I decided to create a website that would be a platform to donate dresses. My original plan was to collect dresses and then hold an in-person prom drive. Due to COVID-19, this was not possible. The dresses that I collect will be used for the following prom season. (2021) Although I was not able to attend my senior prom I attend my junior prom so I knew first hand the financial strain that attending prom brings to a family. If I can help someone to allow another girl to attend her prom I am glad to do so. The process of my capstone was a very challenging one and I faced many obstacles along the way. When looking at the process of how a prom drive could be possible I began to think of the benefits this would bring. I started by getting the word out through social media. Then once I had those who were willing to at I made them sign a contract stating they were giving there dresses away. Switching gears to the website which is that I am the most exciting. This website is easy to maneuver around. I believe this is very important because it helps all backgrounds to be able to access a dress if needed. In the end, I was able to collaborate with girls all over the city to donate dresses. I set a goal of 30 dresses when starting this journey I have fallen short by just a few dresses. With your help, I could reach my goal ;)

For the final senior project of the year, I decided to learn how to play the piano. Which I have been focusing on for the whole school year. However, my intentions were to learn how to play this instrument and then play it for the school. Not just for the school but for graduation, which both plans have been ruined due to the pandemic. My main reasoning for choosing to take on the piano and performance was to see how far I could challenge myself in a short amount of time of learning something new. I wanted to bare the fruits of my labor and be able to show it to my peers and community. During the time of this idea, the Science Leadership community has gone through hard times, being forcefully relocated on multiple occasions. This has brought stress to the individual students, parents, and faculty of the community. As a result, I wanted to play music for everyone to ease those struggling times.

For my Capstone, I wrote a play to share with my community. Originally, I would have also put the play on had the school year not ended too soon. I wanted my senior project to be about something that I find joy in, but also challenged me. Theatre has always had a special place in my heart and is a passion I know I will have for a long time, leading my interest to a project in that field. I knew that putting on the play would be the easier and more enjoyable portion for myself, but writing a play from scratch would be the part of this project that challenged me the most. I wanted my project to be something that other students at SLA interested in theatre could be a part of and create together. Now, I hope my play can teach students about playwriting itself, or give them inspiration for a topic. In order to complete this Capstone, I did the most thinking without writing for a long time. I continued to go back and forth on my ideas, struggling to stick on one. However, after the huge amounts of brainstorming and doubting my own ideas, when I eventually landed on one I felt excited about, I began to write. After that, a large part of playwriting was receiving feedback from my peers to then revise and make it better. I am incredibly proud of myself for putting the work in and making something that I enjoy. Secondly, I am very proud that I so accurately captured the feel of the story I told.

Below is an excerpt of my play:

(Dimitri stands up, removes an inflatable couch from his backpack and shakes it until it’s inflated. While this is happening the rest of the counselors are having low murmured conversations, laughing, and lounging around. Also while this is happening Reese and Ella are close together and laughing.) (Dimitri sits down on the couch. Reese goes and sits beside him, while Ella follows behind. Everyone is still in their respective groups. The three of them sit on the couch, Ella and Reese remain looking at each other and sitting close together)

Being a dancer in a company for several years has impacted my life in many ways. My favorite is being apart of performances, But for a more valued experience performing I wanted to know how I could improve our group performances in the company. My capstone was all about building better communication in a group setting for a better performance. To do this I had to hold a team activity event. The event took place on February 9th, where we got to know eachother better at MIY artistry LLC while making crafts. the even all together lasted about two hours. On top of this project I decided to create a short video that highlighted any fun moments the company had throughout the season.

For my capstone, I made a website that presents information about the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that most people should know such as the definition of autism, facts, causes, symptoms, and treatments. I also added two podcasts where I interviewed a mother of a son on the spectrum and a special education teacher. I was originally going to make a series of podcasts with organizations and publish them on the radio and social media. However, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, I had to dismiss that idea and simply interview people I know through the phone. Most importantly, I learned how to make a website using Wix.com and adjust it to the way I like. I also learned a lot more new information about autism such as the comorbidity of autism and other disorders that I shared on the website. My goal for this capstone is to spread awareness about ASD. I feel confident and proud of this project because I was able to share a lot of information about autism. I have a dream that one day people on the spectrum will be independent, receive the proper education, get a job, and not only benefit themselves but also the community as well and most importantly, get accepted in the society.

I wanted to create a capstone that represented my interests, and had a positive impact on the musicians and artists I know. Foundations for Artists was an idea for an event which would showcase poets, musicians and photographers wanting to start their careers, serving as a networking opportunity, and a memorable experience. However, after quarantine occured it became clear that an event was no longer possible. My final product is an explanation of my process, along with some original music I worked on during quarantine.

For my capstone, I decided to write, produce, and master an EP of my music. An EP is generally 3 to 6 songs long, mine ended up being 5 songs, and titled “Sick and Tired.” The goal was to have a polished and publishable product. Making music is something I’ve always wanted to do but it also has been a big source of insecurity. Making my capstone, “Sick and Tired” forces me to release music which is something I’ve been struggled with doing since I was a freshman. The songs on the album explore the topic of self-perception and letting go of societal pressures. It is a collection of music that shows the growth and setbacks I’ve run into while becoming the person I am today from the point of view of outsiders and myself. For Example, in the case of “Loser” the second song on the EP. The song is about how I felt and feared I was perceived. Another song on the project “Pretty in Pink” discusses my own struggles with femininity from my point of view.

For my Capstone, I decided I wanted to do something with the sneaker community. I took it upon myself to make an Instagram page where I would be giving information about when shoes were releasing and more of the ins and outs of the community. Over the course of the year, I would post pictures of certain shoes and let people know when they were coming out and the price for them. Even though they aren’t up yet there will be videos explaining in detail how to get better with certain aspects of obtaining different shoes. The posts were made on a somewhat weekly basis if not weekly at least monthly at different times. With this project, I learned that these sneaker pages take a lot of time to keep up and running. They also can get tedious at times so newfound respect arose for those pages that I got some information from.

The question is “How to start a nonprofit?” Not just that but also know the information about what’s happening in Venezuela. These two main topics of inquiry are based on how to go forward with helping the Venezuelan community. As a native, I had the first-hand experience of what’s going on in Venezuela. So coming to the United States I investigated more the backbone of these issues causing a humanitarian crisis in Venezuela. But as I got into the nonprofit world I saw the possibilities of helping not only in Venezuela but in other places around the world. It starts with establishing a mission, goals, and persistence for the nonprofit. I have the primary vision for my nonprofit while I have the research. Now, having done intensive research, many hours planning for fundraisers and networking, I’ve had a budgeting system that I will present to donors. This budget will present based on research for fundraising also evidence for the 990 forms. As for the changes in social distancing, I will be working on professional cards, websites for the non-profit, and merchandise to sell. Since 2018 I’ve been keeping records of fundraisers and the collection of ideas. Now in 2020, I’ve gathered much information about nonprofit development but also receipts of fundraising in school and other events. I’ve also been able to network in Rebel Venture’s Expo and also at an Enterprise. Maintaining a steady place to fundraise but also expand to different environments where I’ll be placing the La Luz De Aurora nonprofit flourish. I want to be able to have a better way to market and have a diverse taste of food in fundraisers.

For my capstone project I created a short series of videos about the college process. Working alongside Ms. Hirschfield, I chose three topics for three separate videos that she thought could be beneficial to future senior classes of SLA. Some of the guidelines we set for the videos were that they had to be short enough to keep people’s attention, but long enough to give a good amount of information. It was also important to me that I would be able to give the future seniors advice about the college process from the perspective of a current senior. The topics of the three videos I made are: using Naviance College SuperMatch, Applying for financial aid in college, and answering frequently asked questions about the college process. The process for making these videos was pretty consistent throughout. I first researched the topic of the video, and then used that information to form a script for each video. I then filmed and edited the videos and the final step was polishing them and uploading the videos to my YouTube channel. I am very proud of the final results of my project. I think that I was able to create something that can be used to help guide future seniors through the very stressful process of applying to college.
