Rail Funding Lobbying - Blog 2

​The next step in my quest to secure funding for Amtrak was to learn about my representatives. A constituent of the 1st district of New Jersey, I am represented in the federal government by Representative Rob Andrews, Senator Robert Menendez, and Senator Frank Lautenberg. While all have been in support of railroads in the past, Sen. Lautenberg is the national railroad advocate (which greatly helps my cause).

Lautenberg, the chair of the Senate's Surface Transportation subcommittee, has always been in favor of railroad transportation throughout the United States. In fact, for his efforts to support railroads, the 
Secaucus Junction train station (a large transfer station serving three quarters of all NJ Transit trains) was renamed the "Frank R. Lautenberg Secaucus Junction Station." Lautenberg's focus on railroads comes partly from his background, since his immigrant family often traveled on trains, but also comes from his work as Executive Commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. His efforts to support railroads are widely supported, since many North Jersey and Central Jersey residents use NJ Transit to commute to work in New York City. Overall, it will be easy to get Senator Lautenberg to support Amtrak Funding.

Senator Menendez, while not an outspoken rail advocate, does support railroads. He has voted in favor of Amtrak in every rail-based election since his inauguration. While this support often comes from pressure by Sen. Lautenberg, it will still be easy to get him to support rail funding.

Lastly, Rep. Rob Andrews has been a partial railroad advocate. While he personally wants to support railroads, many South Jersey residents don't. This is most likely the result of a lack railroad transportation in South Jersey (with only the PATCO, Atlantic City Line, and River Line). However, Rep. Andrews has been supporting the proposed Camden-Glassboro line. If the state bill passes, he can certainly support an Amtrak bill without any negative campaigning from his constituents.

Overall, my representatives will be easy to work with and will hopefully support my efforts to increase rail funding.

Lobbying Topic #1

Revolving door: When a elective official to leave his position as a means to transfer into a position to work as a lobbyist the same goes for the versa. This can be called a form of corruption. This is an issue because of the information passed through using this method.

Ex.

Laurence Lessig called people to challenge the presidential candidates to promise that they will only appoint FCC commissioners who promise not to work for those who have regulated for at least 5 years after their term is over. He issued that call-to-action after the GAO found that the FCC is providing information to lobbyist about upcoming meeting agenda. Basically FCC members were lobbying information a week before its public announcement.

David E. Jeremiah: 
While serving on the Defense Policy Board, which advises the Secretary of Defense (Donald H. Rumsfeld at the time) on military strategy, was hired by Boeing Company as a consultant while it was seeking Pentagon approval for a $20 billion contract for aerial refueling tankers. "An internal Boeing e-mail message indicated that the men, Adm. David Jeremiah, a retired vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a member of five corporate boards, and Gen. Ronald Fogleman, who retired from the Air Force, were to lobby Mr. Rumsfeld's office."

How did you apply the SLA core values to your project?

Throughout this project I did use the five SLA core values. Inquiry is the act of asking for information. Throughout this project I went to my peers and asked for certain words. Researching is the act of investigation. I investigated old photos from the past. Collaboration is the act of working with someone to create something. While peer editing, I did collaborate with my peers. I am presenting my project through imovie. It is neatly edited and done.  I have and continue to reflect on the work that I have done.


What did you learn about Spanish through completing this project?

I learned how to use the pretérito tense. I also learned new words just as “meido” and phrases such as “we left”.


What did you change about your final project based on peer feedback?  What did you change based on Srta. G’s feedback?

I made a lot of agreement and grammatical errors. Those were the main things that I had to change. As for sentence structure, it remained mainly the same.

If you had the opportunity to start your project all over again, how would you do it differently?

I would have used more pictures. I don’t have many pictures. However, I would have spent more time figuring out how to work with pictures.


Did you enjoy this project? Why or why not?

I enjoyed this project because it allowed me to look back on past summers and think of all the things that I have actually done. Also, this project allowed me to use imovie. Editing this project was fun.

Do you have any suggestions for me if I do this same project next year?

I do not have any suggestions for you if you do the same project next school year.

Manners are important in any language, and Español is no exception. Here are a few words you should know in order to show respect and gratitude.

Now that you know the words, let’s go over in which situations you use them. Con Permiso is used when you are asking someone to move out of your way. Disculpe is used to try to get someone’s attention. Lastly, Perdón is used to apologize if you accidentally knock into someone.

Keystone XL Pipeline


I'm sweating so badly, I have never sweat like this before. I’m so scared....I have this big interview coming up in a few minutes its weird. I wonder if I could just leave and do this tomorrow because I don’t think it’s going to happen today. I don’t think that it is possible to just go out there without fear. Like I don’t know if I can deal with the fact that I’m singled out on that stage in front of a billion people. What am I doing talking to myself pacing back and forth? I feel like I can’t do this. I’m leaving. I have to leave now I’m starting to feel sick. No I can’t go back, I have to go out there and face my fear. I have an oil company to defend and I need to defend it today. I need to stand in front of those environmentalists. I am not going to look like a fool, I’m going to march in that room and everyone will know what I am talking about. There is nothing standing in my way of being a boss doing my job. No one can take that from me because I am me. Ok so in there I go. Oh my gosh who am I kidding I don’t have the guts to go and there I didn’t even prepare my questions and answers so I would know what to say just in case they ask me that question and then I would feel lost .

Like who doesn’t know about the pipeline are they insane. Even though it causes a lot of economic problems. It’s also the reason why you guys are here today in the building full of electricity made from the oil that we are pumping through. From Canada to the U.S we are not using those solar solar panels we are using easy transportation. That oil makes Jobs an with those jobs, the environmentalist good get a job cleaning up the environment. Instead of getting arrested.


Hello ladies and gentleman, we now must welcome the oil company representative for the day. He will speaking kin favor for the oil company. Now for you economical people we would like to please silence your booing or anything to make this man not speak. We want him not to be nervous as possible. We don’t want to mess up his beginning speech now before the interview. Ok guys we have some bags to give out some for Eco and some for Oil Company we have them all everyone should get one. It doesn’t matter what you take just make sure you allow the man to speak on his behalf of that company. Now ladies and gentleman we have some problems back stage with him, he’s a little nervous. Our crew is trying to get him out that room now. Ok guys we might have to do this tomorrow because it doesn’t look like we can do this today I’m sorry for bringing you guys out here to see something that might not happen. I am so sorry guys I’ll be back. Damn it why would he just chicken out like that what was he thinking. He’s supposed to be a good representative for what he believes in now he’s gone. All because he can’t handle actually speaking in public or something so stupid. Arrghh. I am so mad at him like WTF. You know what I’m going to go out there and tell the people to come back another time unless he come back. At this moment he won’t be coming back.

Espanol Summer!

The project was to find and select 5 or more pictures from past summers. We were to find the pictures and describe them using our espanol vocabulary and past tense words.
How did you apply the SLA core values to your project. Then we had to create the pictures into a presentation and post it into sla blog aka slate.

I questioned about my family history. I Researched what i used to do in my past summers. I collaborated with my relatives to get the pictures. I am presenting my project on slate. I am reflecting on it with these reflection questions.


What did you learn about Spanish through completing this project?

I learned that fue means was and other past ensue words.

What did you change about your final project based on peer feedback?  What did you change based on Srta. G’s feedback?


Nothing was changed.

If you had the opportunity to start your project all over again, how would you do it differently?

I would have more than three people peer edit my work

Did you enjoy this project? Why or why not?

The project was new and fun. It wasn't something that I had expected. 


Do you have any suggestions for me if I do this same project next year?

One suggestion is to be more flexible with the number of pictures. If a person only has like 2 or 4 then that should be worth more than just a C.

1. ¡Día uno de mi familia vacaciones en la playa de Virginia! El agosto pasado, viajamos a la playa de Virginia por cinco días con mi familia de mi papá. Lo pasamos cansado y genial! Los pasamos cansado porque mi familia y yo fuimos por la mañana a la son las cinco. Mi prima y yo le gusta sacar fotos mientras fuimos bobas. Nosotros somos surfing por que es el surfing competencia detrás de nosotros.
2.¡Día uno de mi familia vacaciones en la playa de Virginia! El agosto pasado, viajé a la playa de Virginia por cinco días con mi familia de mi papá. Pasamos cansado y genial! Los pasamos cansado por que mi familia y yo fuimos por la mañana a la son las cinco. Fuimos corrimos encima de la acerca. Mi papá y primos y yo verimos la salida de sol.

I felt that I learned that all of the past tense verbs and used them well during this project. Also I enjoyed having every detail in my presentation and involving my family in this project. In all, this project was very fun to do even though it was hard going back and forth with the dictionary.






I feel like this project was rushed a little and I wish I had more peer edits because all of my peers said it was okay but after the teacher edits, there were some things that needed to be changed.



How did you apply the SLA core values to your project?
Inquiry: I questions how I would organize and get started on my work.
Research: I researched a lot of terms in my project from the dictionary.
Collaboration: I had a lot of peer edits and teacher edits done.
Presentation: I used Keynote to present my work.
Reflection: I am looking back and writing what i can do differently and what I think my strongest and weakest points in this project were.

I would spend more time on the wording and see what I can do to make my project nicer.

I enjoyed this project because I got to include my family and because past tense verbs are easy for me.

Zac Castro - Q1 - Art

So this is my 2nd drawing of Jamie (backside). The reason I say it's my 2nd drawing is because someone took down my 1st drawing, and i don't know who or where it went to. My 2nd drawing isn't as good as the 1st one i had drawn but my drawing is very cool. I know it may be hard to see because of the paper i used but i outlined it with some darker colors. Its not very detailed but i did a last minute job cause of the problem i had. I just want to give a special thanks to Emma for helping Matt Ferry and me out for being my Art partner. So yeah, I'll take comments (good or bad). So thanks and here is my drawing

Philadelphia Curfew

    I am lobbying against the age restriction of curfew in Philadelphia. I feel as though the ages should not be under 18 because that affects a lot of teenagers that do have jobs out there. For example all of the 17 year old that have jobs out there and are done at 11 pm at night or later.
    I want to investigate on this a little more because I feel as though its not right and since one group of kids wanted to cause a ruckus not everyone should have to suffer for their actions. I feel as the the age should be 17 for the curfew because not only are 17 year olds working but they are also young adults. I feel as though if I was to bring this up to someone and continued to try and make these changes I would have a good amount of supports, not only the teens that work late at night, but also parents of these kids. I don't feel as though teenagers should be penalized for the mistake of a group of teenagers who have nothing to do better with their lives but cause ruckus.
    A lot of people might think that I am foolish for trying to bring the age down for these teenagers but I feel as though nowadays seventeen year olds should know their right from wrong. That's why I was stating that they would at least give it a try and trust that these teenagers in Philadelphia wouldn't make me regret trying to change the age for them. If this was to be changed and these teens were still disobeying the law that their would be precautions. That's one thing that I completely agree with the curfew law, and that's the punishments that kids and teens would get if they broke the rule. For example if this law was to be broken by a child or yours for example you, the parent would be fined with a bill. It states that if the law was broken parents can face a fine up to $500. Now that should make parents more informed on how serious this law is being taken.
