We
were asked to write Descriptive Essay about something that happened in our life.
I chose to write about the summer earlier that year. “Out in the 90-degree
weather and a storm we were up on the roof trying to prevent the resistant
leaks”. As I realize now this
first assignment in English was really the backing of the whole year. I had to
learn to be more descriptive and creative at the same time. It was a bit
challenging at first because I did not write like this before. As time went on
and the projects called for more and more I
started writing better and better.
Oddly
enough the project that I surpassed my standard for writing was the Monologue
Project for History. For this
project we had to pick a human rights struggle. I had to do a lot of research
to understand and convey the topic clearly. I had chosen drug trafficking because of the different
reasons to do it and how some people don’t really have a choice. “I know she
needs the money but its drug money!”(Scene-1).
The daughter had kidney disease and the family needed fast money to pay for her
medical bills. This project forced
me to be very original, descriptive and creative. Though, we had a little help from Kate from Young
Playwrights. She helped most of the class and I our plays. Even still it really pushed my ability and raised the bar for
realistic fiction writing that will come in the future.
The
Sweatshop trial that we as a class did in middle of the year was probably the most
enjoyable activity for history.
The class split up into groups to take positions on the real world
problem sweatshops. Each group was
questioned on the amount of control that they had on the situation and why it
was still going on. “U.S.
Consumers - If you wanted these “sweat
shops” to end, you would have to stop buying into these companies”. As well as,
each group had to present opening and closing statements on their
position. Finally, as a class we
voted to see which group we thought had the most guilt. My group was the Poor
Country Ruling Elite. We had to
research a ton of statistics, information and articles to fathom our position
and perspective on the issue. This
assignment taught me about perspective because we had to really see from a
group of people’s point of view on a hard issue.
Overall this year has been very enjoyable and memorable. I learned many new things and polished others that we rough. I hopefully will remember the experiences or the hard earned skills. English and History class in sophomore year was a wonderful opportunity.
We
learned factual topics but some were on more of a personal level. In English
class we were challenged with writing many different types of poems. We learned
how to write the different types of poems and read examples written by a
variety of authors. The poems in the Poetry
Portfolio had very few guidelines and I found myself writing about personal
things. Its not easy writing about personal things and publicizing the for many
people to read. “When I found out no one would hear
the words I spoke. The day I was silenced. The day you didn't want to hear me” (Poetry Portfolio). I am more of a shy person but for some reason I have
grown out of that and I am not so shy on personal topics. I think as this year
went on I learned more about the people around making me more comfortable.
For
an odd project for both English and History, we were a part of the Art in the Open
festival on the Schuylkill River. We got to work with professionals to create
our own site specific performance, which is a performance, which relates directly
to the place you are performing it in. My group called out The Movement That Never Stops, I thought that I wouldn’t be able to
do it well and create a good piece but when you work hard at something it will turn
out great. We worked through hot and long day up until our performances and all
of them turned out great. The Leah Stein Dance Company helped us tremendously
and showed us that we could create pieces from scratch that are of high
quality.
A
key component in factual topics is research; we were presented with a project
about a larger issue of the world. I did much research on the topic I chose
which was education crisis in Afghanistan. The research leads to another project, Monologue Project. This project used the facts we learned about our
larger issue to create monologue from different viewpoints of people that might
have been affected by the issue. This is where I learned many different useful
sites to use for general researching and I learn that there is never a thing as
too much research. This is where I my stamina while doing projects, meaning I
learned that I would do a large amount of work to make something good. “I felt like he took me with him, that the outside of the
gate didn’t mean freedom but controlled”(Monologue Project).
Another factual project was the Religion Project that dealt with a lot of research. All of my classmates chose different religions to research and do the project on. But religion is a touchy topic for many people, and when you go to a very diverse school, you have to learn to be respectful. I had to learn to not get offended by what people say about my religion. I think this year and project helped me to not be so closed to what people say and not to take offense to things people say. It’s a part of growing up, everyone has their own opinion and I learned to respect them even if I don’t like them. I learned that I could respect something but not agree with it.
I can say that I learn so much this year
in these two classes. There was a lot of work and effort that I had to put into
the work but in the end it was complete and I am happy that I survived sophomore
year.
2)
For my project, I made a video. In this video,
I don't have a lot of pictures of me when I was younger because I can't find
any at home. The only ones I found are in the video. I felt as though I worked
really hard for this project because this is the last project and that was the
only way to get an A in this class. I think I did really well with the script.
That would be like the best part of my project. If I were to do this project
again, I wouldn't change much because I like the way it is right now. By doing
this project, I felt as though I've learned a lot this year because it's like a
reflection to all the things we've learned through out the year.
I didn't like
is project that much because I feel as though we did not have enough time to
complete each parts. We were given a week to complete each parts which is not
enough time if you are trying to do it right. There are two of my arts that I
did really well on, I guess is because I spend more time's doing them than I
did for any other ones. If I were given more time, my project would have been
even better. I did worked hard on each one of my arts, and I worked best to my
ability.I would have done so much better if I had enough time to finish. I’m
every grateful for doing those arts because they make me feel like I have learn
so much about art. That I can draw a picture on my own without anyone’s help. Doing
this project send a message that I’m really doing well at drawing, I guess is
because I now understand the messages behind my arts. Art wasn’t always my
thing because I thought art had no purpose and you can’t express yourself with
art like how you can with words. I was wrong because I’m expressing how I feel
about my own work and how seeing my own work like this, affects me. I’m looking
forward to the next year.

Reflection:
aprendimos me llegaron. Y creo que por esto escribí ocho poemas de la guerra
civil. Me gusto mucho mi presentación final porque reflecte lo mucho que
trabaje tenerlo, yo creo que mi proyecto final es muy sentido y no creo que
cambiara algo si podía.
The process for completing my project was brainstorming, outlining the content, writing sentences in spanish, peer-reviewing sentences, re-writing the sentences, gathering the pictures needed, putting them together into a book. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get the book printed in time so attached is a pdf with all the pages in it.
I feel like I did very well on putting together the pictures into book in Aperture.
I would use my time better and finish it very early so that I could order the book and have it be in my hand on the day its due.
I learned how to describe what I want to be when I grow up, what i liked when i was younger, what i like now, what i will like in the future, what i don't like, what i didn't like in the past, what I will not like in the future, what Im doing after i graduate high school, and how to describe what i was like when i was young and currently.
