Posted by Naihema Powell in SP1-007 onGreetings My Friends;
Normally you don’t just walk up to people and start talking to them, randomly out of the blue. You need to approach and greet them before starting an all out conversation. There are multiple ways to greet somebody in the Spanish speaking language. Look through the FIRST set of flash cards and listen to the pronunciation of the words until you get the hang of it!**Starting to get the hang of it? Now lets move on to the second part of our greetings! Usually the question "How are you doing?" follows shortly after hello is said. To ask "How are you doing" or "How are you" use the phrase, "Como estas?" Study the second set of flash cards until you get the hang out it, be sure to listen to the pronunciation of each word.
**Now that you've got it, watch this video clip of two strangers talking while they wait at the bus stop!**

Posted by Gabriel Musselman in SP1-007 onThe difference between respect and disrespect en Español!
To
tell the difference between a respectful and a relaxed attitude in Spanish, you
need to know the difference between two Spanish terms:
Tú,
and Usted (Ud.) While these words both mean you in English, in Spanish Tú is a
relaxed form of the term, while Usted is used when talking to a superior, or
someone that you respect.

Where are you from?
Posted by Owen Grzywinski in SP1-006 onWhere are you from? (informal) - ¿ De dónde eres tú?
Where are you from (formal) - ¿ De dónde es usted?
Do you see the difference between the two? We went over how to use "Tú" and "Usted" in the last lesson but it still is applied here.
Now what happens when you are asked this question? Don't worry, here is how to respond.
Soy de pero vivo en
As an example, say your from Chicago but you live in Florida this how you would phrase it.
Soy de Chicago pero vivo en Florida
Get it? now to end the lesson, in the event that you are from the same place as the person you are asking there is an optional phrase you can add.
Yo también! - So am I!
Here is how you would use it in a conversation
Matthew - Soy de Philadelphia pero vivo en Colorado
Alexis - Yo también!
Heres a video on how to use these phrases, pay attention to the use of "Tú" and " Usted"
How to say hello and basic conversation starters.
Posted by Owen Grzywinski in SP1-006 on1.) Good morning!-¡Buenos dias!
2.) Good afternoon!-¡ Buenas tardes!
3.) Good night!-¡ Buenas noches!
Notice how Buenos dias is different from the rest. Instead of "os" we would use "as" for the endings of the next two. Keep that in mind!
Your on a roll and it would be great to ask them how they are doing. Here are a couple ways to do that.
1.) How are you?-¿Qué tal?, ¿Comó va?, Cómo estás tú?
1.) ¿Cómo está usted?
See how it is different from the others? In Español there are specific ways to ask people things depending on who the are.
One more thing that would be good to know is how to ask someones name and how old they are.
1.) ¿Cómo te iiamas? - What is your name
2.) ¿Cómo se iiama usted? (formal) What is your name sir/ma'am
3.) ¿Cuántos años tienes?- How old are you?
4.) ¿ Cuántos años tiene usted? (formal)- How old are you sir/ma'am
Here is a short video on how you would use these phrases, pay attention to the use of "Usted" and "tú"!
"Tú" VS " Usted" Know your place!
Posted by Owen Grzywinski in SP1-006 onAmy and Eric have been friends for years, heres how they would talk to each other if they met in the park.
Amy- ¡Hola Eric! Cómo estás tú?
Eric- Muy bien, gracias. Y tú?
Amy- Mas o menos.
Another example would be something like this. Two school friends meet each other in the hallway, they stop to say hello.
Ian- ¡Hola!, ¿Cómo va?
Michel- Eh, estoy estresado gracias mi amigo.
Simon- !Hola Señor! ¿Cómo está usted?
Señor Presidente- Muy bien gracias.
If you want to polite, you need to alter the way you talk. Here is a difference between to common phrases.
To a friend- ¿Cómo estás tú?
To a teacher- ¿Cómo está usted?
Heres a table of phrases so that you can see the difference.
