Final Artist Statement

This final quarter I believe I did some fine work but I will be honest and say it wasn't my best. The first assignment due I could not complete because I did not have a laptop. My figure drawings artwork was really special to me I worked hard on it and I believe I did a good job on it. I choose a picture to draw that had a nice position for recreating it. My line drawings were my personal favorite this year I believe I did some amazing work with them. I think line drawing is fun altogether so this assignment was especially fun for me. For my digital drawing I tried really hard because it was difficult to make. I had to create it 3 times because every time I tried for some reason it would delete. I think my final was the best one though. The illusion of space drawing was also a very fun one for me. I did a fish and i decided to play around with the shadow of a fish and made ripples on the page to make it seem as though the paper was a pond. This was another one of my favorites this quarter I thought I did good work on it.  The practice texture drawing was very hard for me. There were so many items and textures to capture in the picture so it was really hard to get it done but I tried and I succeeded. For my last piece of the year the element of art drawing i decided to keep it really simple and just draw a tree. I think I did an ok job on it I could have done a lot better but I tried. In all I think this quarter just helped me realize that art is a very fun form of expression and I am very lucky and grateful that I got to attend the class this school year.

Element Print

The element that was chosen for me was Chlorine which has 17 for its atomic number. In 1774 Chlorine was discovered by Carl Wilhelm Scheele. Chlorine is one of the elements that isn’t just found in free nature. Scheele combined MnO2 and HCI to get Chlorine. In today’s society Chlorine is used to help drinking water be safe for humans and for pool water as many people may know. It also has to do a lot with the production of paper, plastic, dyes, textiles, and paint. I didn’t want to be basic a draw a pool because everyone knows the chlorine is in pool water. So I used bamboo trees because chlorine is found in that. From making this print it took plenty of patience and creativity. First I to sketch what it should look like. Then I went on the the template. After that I went the styrofoam which was a little tricky because it had to be drawn backwards. Once I got to print my element it was coming out great. If I were to do this project over again I would crave in the styrofoam a little because sometimes the paint would get in the shallow parts. The final print process was the most enjoyable for me because once I got to see my final project done I was statisfied.

Helping Minors Stay Home

This is me putting a flyer in the third floor girls bathroom
This is me putting a flyer in the third floor girls bathroom

Hello again. In my first post I discussed how my topic changed from the dc girls crisis into minors running away.  In my second post I discussed my original research. I conducted my original research by putting out a survey about what people knew about running away. In this post I will be sharing my third part of my project and my agent of change.

Continuing my research about minors running away I found some organizations that try to help. Basically what they do is, they run a 24 hour service where teenages can reach them via text , call or email to express their thoughts. This is a good way  to help the problem because it's not a lot of other options someone could do to prevent minors from running away and putting themselves in danger. Youthline is a great organization for not only minors that are running away but other things issues too. Adults and teenagers will answer on the Youthline. I think that is great because sometimes teenagers want to talk to other teenagers because they don't fully trust adults.

For my agent of change I decided to make posters with the numbers to contact runaways hotlines. Before I came up with that idea I didn't know how I was going to reach teens without overwhelming them with facts. By talking to my peers I came up with the idea to make posters. The first obstacle of making posters was that they could not be boring they would have to draw somebodys attention. Secondly I had to decide what information I was going to put on the posters to help. Lastly where I was going to put them up. On the posters I put two numbers on the posters, National Runaway Safeline and Youthline. I was effective in making a change because by me posting the posters teenagers that might be considering running away will see them and call the number.

When my teacher introduced this project I was excited because I got to choose something that was important to me. Also I really liked the fact that we would be doing the project on or own without having to meet a lot of deadlines. I've not only learned a lot about my topic but myself over the course of this project. Something I've learned about myself is that I enjoy helping others. My whole project was to prevent people from putting themselves in danger. Discovering this about myself could be the first step to figuring out what job I want to be when I get older. Doing this project I've listened to my peers and what was important to them. Seeing the topics my peers chose showed me that everyone was different and has been through different experiences. Overall I feel as though it brought my whole english class together. And  was a great miniature version of the 12th grade capstone that I will have to do in the future.

Agent Of Change - Ossowski

In my last two posts, I talked about animal poaching and its effects on people and communities. Slate Post #1, I talked about an interview I did with my dad “The Hunter” and how he thought it effects people and communities, I also talked about my opinion on this topic. In Slate Post #2, I talked about an interview I found on the internet, and a survey I did for others opinions on animal poaching. I wanted to see what people knew about animal poaching. In this post, I will be talking about other research and my Agent Of Change for my You & the World project.

For my AOG, I did a animal poaching scavenger hunt for kids. However, I could not do my Agent Of Change because the park I was supposed to do it at, didn’t let me do it. I was going to donate to a fund called  “World Wildlife Fund”. This fund looked like a good place to raise money for, since I couldn’t volunteer at their organization. I was going to let 20 people come and search for a picture of an animal. Then they would come and get the prizes. They consisted of a mask, a little notebook, a stamp and a sticker.

I decided to do this scavenger hunt because it related to animal poaching very well. I think this was a good way to get the word of animal poaching out because everything was related to animals and they were hunting. They took the picture out of their place and got a prize for it.

This You & the World project made me feel proud for what I tried to accomplish. I almost hosted my very first event. I contacted an organization about everything I could do to help. Even though they said that I couldn’t volunteer, I did try to donate. In my project since I tried to host an event, I had to get in touch with the park I wanted to host the event at. They didn’t get back to me until Thursday afternoon telling me they couldn’t get the park set up in time. Although I did consider changing my AOC, I realized it was too late. If I were to do it again, I wish that I would’ve been able to actually do the scavenger hunt.

I feel like I could’ve done the AOC better because I didn’t give myself enough time to actually do the AOC because of other things. I had to do multiple others things and got sidetracked. I wish I was more focused with projects. I feel like I did learn a lot while I did this whole project, I learned about animal poaching, I learned about my family, I learned about other people in my community.  I also learned about how poachers do their “job” and even about how one came to be. I learned everything there is to know about animal poaching. I also learned how hard it is to host an event, and how much it takes to actually do it. Even though I didn’t get to do my AOC, I did make a change. When I sent my survey out, I made people think without them knowing it. The one question everyone had trouble with was the one I was most interested in. “DO you believe animals should be kept in zoo’s” (that’s not the exact question)

I hope that my project did impact a lot of people and got people thinking on animal poaching. If you would like more information about my topic please look at my Annotated Bibliography.

Platinum: Print Edition

My element was Platinum, number 78. It was discovered by Antonio de Ulloa He was a spanish general of the navy, an explorer, scientist, author, astronomer and the first spanish governor of Louisiana. He discovered it in 1735 but it was being used by pre-Columbian Indians at that time. It is in Earth’s crust of about a millionth of 1 percent. The first thing I thought about when I got platinum was platinum records. Music is something I like and doing this was going to show my love for music and my element. My process for this was kind of hard because I am not good at making straight lines so making the border was the hardest part. Also making the print was hard because I messed up so much. Especially when we were putting the paint on the shiny paper. I would probably make my picture A WHOLE LOT BETTER. I think that I did a horrible job on it and it looks horrible. I would do the whole thing over again. I probably would've enjoyed the part where we were making the picture better if I made it better. I really like to draw and I didn't do a good job at making it.

We Picked Up So Much Litter!

With my first blog post I talked about how the world will look like Earth from the Disney movie, WALL-E. The reason I related the future of Earth to WALL-E’s world is because in WALL-E the world is a trash planet covered in trash. There is buildings made of trash, now our Earth right now doesn’t have buildings of trash, but we do have large heaps and streets filled with trash. So how will it be in the future? Look at my old Blog Post here. In my second blog post I talked about my own research and my results. Such as my graphs histograms, and pie charts. Also how I don’t want people to just pick up litter and make the world beautiful, also I want people who don’t know the full extent of littering and it's effects, to learn that. If you want to see my second blog post go here.

There is many companies in the, making the world beautiful business. Cleaning up litter, recycling, etc. Most of these companies have huge amounts of their own research and can’t stand to see humans destroy the planet. They created organizations and began do actually do something about the problems created by humans. I love the earth and it birthed us, the least we can do is clean up our messes right? People who do clean up the world can be seen here. While I don’t have the funds or the people to clean up the world as much as these groups do, I still try and do my fair share, and with this project I was able to. My agent of change was to brings trash bags with me and walk around the school, people who knew that I had the bags would ask for one then would pick up a bunch of litter on their way home. I gave out 16 trashbags. Here are some of the images I got from the people.

This project was my first ever project where I really handled my time and got my hands dirty as well. I had 2 trash bags filled. I worked very hard on this project. I am honestly very happy Ms. Giknis gave a project like this, one where it actually matters to me. I’m sure every single student has felt like most of the projects they get are stupid, pointless etc. This was the only project where we were able to work and try to fix an problem that affects the student and the people around them. I am proud of all the work I produced. Some of the groups that I researched had lots and lots of work and really spoke to me directly, one of them you can see here. This website talks about the Anti-Litter Campaign. The ALC cleans litter in a completely different way than we are used to. Such as this one. In London, a clever team of designers and environmentalists are "tricking" people into changing their litter habits. For example, instead of dropping cigarettes butts on the ground, people are invited to vote for their favorite football player by places their rubbish in a voting bin. This is an example of how this campaign works and how they clean the world. They add a very fun twist to cleaning litter which really is appreciative.

Sulfur: Elijah Afrifa

My element is Sulfur and it's atomic number is 16. Sulfur is found in volcanic areas. This element can be used in many ways such as in matches, fertilizer, and even gunpowder. The reason I chose to draw this picture was when I found out that they were in matches and matches make flames. I went through the process of printmaking to finally get my final piece. This process took about 4 weeks to complete. If I had a second chance to do this I would probably change the image that I created. I would have made a more common symbol to represent Sulfur. I enjoyed the final step of printmaking.I had to dip the stencil in ink and stamp it onto a piece of paper.

Rubber stamp

This stamp symbolizes me ,because it is very simple ,and I am a very simple. I made the stamp my favorite color to make it a little more personal. The importance of the negative and positive in my stamp is to make the letters stand out. I overcame not understanding at all what positive and negative did in art to fully understanding it plays a big role in painting a full picture in the viewer's mind

Week 9 - Day 1 & 2 print/mat

File_000 (9)

My element is platinum, the chemical symbol is Pt, and the atomic number is 78. Platinum is one of the most expensive metals, it is used in car exhaust to make the exhaust less toxic, and is used in the jewelry, like rings, and necklaces. Platinum is also used in advertisements, to sell certain jewelry because it very valuable, it helps sell art.

I got the idea for my imagery from the internet, I was researching stuff about my element, and I found some picture that I thought that I could use, then I mixed it all together and it formed my imagery. I decided to pick an image where the ocean waves were pushing away a huge rock. To make it relevant to my element I had the outside of the rock carved out with the chemical symbol,Pt. I kept the waves the same, and added on little money bags on the swerves of the waves because platinum is one the most valuable metals known.

When designing my print/matt I had to first figure out what my element would be. Then I had find a picture and research the history about my element. After that was completed, I had to draw my image, and trace it onto a thin sheet a paper. Next class I had to carve our image out from the paper I had traced it onto the day before onto a foamy type piece of material. When all the tracing was completed the printing began. I was instructed to print out six prints of my drawing. Last class, was creating my write up for the print and posting it on slate.

If I had the chance to do my print over again, I would probably change my design to something between, and not so simple. I enjoyed every part of this project, specifically the drawing and printing part of it. Art is a number one's passion of mine, so drawing is really fun to do. Printing was interesting because I got to see my drawing in different colors and doing this taught me how to print in another style.

My element is Cobalt, its number is 27. Cobalt is the element used to design machines, coat magnets, and stain glass to a blue color. The origin of the word cobalt, is goblin in German. I decided to do something different and draw a cartoon figure, something a little funny looking. To make this I had a couple drawings and they were all different from each other, when I looked at the 3 samples, I brought it down to the nitty gritty. I picked the goblin, it was my best drawing. If I could do something differently, I would get a blue colored ink, to compliment the history of Cobalt. I enjoyed doing the the tracing papers because it was a quick and easy step. To trace, you need a simple design and you lay your tracing paper on top, next you trace lightly and it comes out beautifully.

Body Image: Agent of change and what I learned.

In my first blog post, I talked about body image and how It is an issue connected to me, that I wanted to focus on for my project. I did research on body image, how models are portrayed and how that along with social media affects people. In my second blog post I talked about a survey that I created to see how people in the Science Leadership Academy (SLA) community feel about body image. I wrote about the responses I got and explained what they meant.

After doing my survey I wanted to see what organizations were making any effort to change the stereotype of the perfect body image, or how people feel about their body. I found out that dove has a project called the “Dove Self-Esteem Project”. The project is trying to boost girls confidence and raise self esteem. I think that this is a great organization trying to make a change, because they are a very big and well know company that is making awareness. When they have commercials they also mention their project trying to make people aware of the issue.

Dove self esteem project

Now at this point I needed to do my agent of change. My plan for my agent of change was to create a presentation for my advisory that explained my you and the world project overall. I wanted to make people in the SLA community aware of how other people in the community feel about body image. I wanted to overall tell them what I learned from this project. In my presentation I shared how body Image was connected to me, the information I found online from research, and the most important information I received from my survey. During the presentation I began to kind or feel emotional because the issue was personal and I was sharing both my experience and what I learned.

Overall this project taught me a lot, Both about the community and body image. I learned a lot of information about how body image effects people as a whole and the ones we see everyday. This project was easy to complete, due to it being something that I am passionate about. The project was never boring. This project opened up a part of myself that I didn't know about. I didn't know that body image was an issue in our community. But after looking deep into myself I learned that it was something that was affecting me when I was younger and is now affecting people in my community. I feel like this project should be expanded. If i was to continue this I would want the whole school to be aware of the issue and I would want to make a better agent of change that helps people dealing with body image issues. I probably should have stayed on top of my work and always use my time productively. I probably would have got more done. But overall I loved this project and i would do it again whenever. I am so glad that this project was assigned, I would have never learned so much about body image.

Art and Stuff- Shamble

This quarter I experimented more with various mediums to attempt to extend my abilities. I learned about texture and perspective, two very important elements to art. I tried to create as much variation as possible in my work.
There is no specific message linking these pieces, but I tried as hard as I could on them. They all came together for my final piece- the cat with flowers. I liked it so much that I made two more and submitted one to the 4th floor. It was overall a very productive quarter.

2. My element is found in toothpaste ,and tap water ,because it helps to whiten teeth.
3. I got the idea for my art pieces because fluorine is found in toothpaste so my image was a toothpaste bottle
4.  My process for making the art piece was looking at  tooth bottle and observing all the details ,and then sketching it out.
5.  I would take my time and add more details to the print  more realistic
6. My favorite part of the project  was the printing itself, because it is interesting to see how it came to be.

Slate Post #3

You & The World                                                                                                  Agent of Change

My topic is Nursing Home abuse. I have two main goals for this project. First, I want to raise awareness to people who do not have an Elder in a Nursing Home so that if they see it in a Nursing Home or hear about it, they know the situation and how to handle it correctly. I researched an organization  that teaches you how to correctly/controllably handle a situation in reporting Nursing Home Abuse. Secondly, I want people who do have an Elder in a Nursing Home or plan to place their Elder in a Nursing Home to be aware of events that could be potentially happening or potential to happen.

For my third checkpoint of the You and the World project, we were given the task of creating an  Agent of Change project. Our task in this was to find something we could do to accomplish our goal of the You and the World Project. We could host an event, create a poster, make a presentation. For my Agent Of change, I created a presentation that I hosted in the conference room. I presented on my topic for the You and the World which was Nursing Home Abuse. I have discussed about Nursing home abuse in Slate post #1 and Slate post #2. I also created a Survey  which I would love for you to fill out. It would help me so much. So for my presentation I created a slide show. The slide show basically described what my topic was and my main goals were in making this project. I also explained the most common types of abuse in these nursing homes. These types are mental abuse, verbal abuse, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. My presentation was very successful and I feel that I accomplished my two main goals. I had about 18 to 20 people come for my presentation. Three of those people had a Elder in a nursing home. So it was great to let them know about events that could potentially be happening to their Elder. I also introduced the survey that I created in Slate post #2. My audience was very interested in the types of abuse and they had many questions about how often they occurred and if they really occurred. People were really stuck on how Elders are sexually abused, which is the sad truth. These are the moments that touch people to care more about these things and be more aware and spread the word. So in conclusion, I am very happy with my You and the World project and my Agent of Change section. I believe that I reached the goals that I set myself to achieve.20170608_120804.jpg20170608_120553.jpg

Making a Change- the final post

Feeding Starving Children

Making A Change

I decided to name this blog making a change because in this post I am making a change in the world. Feeding starving children is a very serious thing and I’m glad people have started to take action on it including myself. In my last blog post  I stated how there were many organizations making a change and finding different ways to help children all over the world. One organization I am affiliated with and know the most about is what this project is basically based off on, Feed My Starving Children Organization. Some things I have done for my project is get my family and friends involved. Working with this organization has been a true blessing am I am glad to still be working with them in the future.

IMG_4103.JPG

This is a picture of some of the volunteers making and putting the food into boxes. After we made 32 packs of food we would pack them into one of the boxes and “whoop” when we were done. It was actually really fun to see everyone be so enthusiastic about packing food for starving children and be willing to do something like this. I also really enjoyed talking to the people there while packaging the foods. Some people were volunteers just like me but have been working with them for years.  The people there were amazing though, no one complained everyone had smiles and was happy to help.

IMG_4098.JPG

When I was there I had to remember simple steps such as remembering to put the food in our: vitamins, vegetables, soy and then rice. It was something so simple but after doing it for a few hours it kind of got mixed up sometimes. The people there were so nice though so I wasn’t shy or bored, it was actually really fun to talk the people. Most of these people are from my church and some of them are volunteers who help every year. Everyone had great attitudes that day it was such a fun experience.

IMG_4107.JPG

Each of these boxes were 700lbs and it took a crew to help load it onto the truck. The whole togetherness and vibe of the place really made me want to do it again.  I really believe these people are a true blessing and they are doing something really great for these children who sometimes believe they don’t have someone there for them. I also would like the chance to visit these countries with them in the future and see all the children they have saved. I think it would be so cool to be apart of something like that it’s something I do see myself doing in the future.

Doing this project has definitely made my top 10 best projects. It was really great to share my thoughts and actions  with other people on how I can change the world. Initially I wanted to meet with one of the representatives of the organization but it didn’t work out that way till my agent of change. Unfortunately it didn’t happen but I was glad to be apart of something so small that it’s gonna be big in the future. I’m really glad that I got to share my project with everyone. I also want to thank Ms. Giknis for letting us do this project and helping me throughout the project!

Final Art

My element was gold, the atomic number is 79. Gold is primarily used in jewelry and aesthetics, it can also be used in food, and money. In old stories dragons usually guard piles of gold, and my picture is a dragon on-top a pile of gold.

Mrs. Hull taught us how to sketch into our foam, flip it over so it’s backwards, then roll it and make a print of it. I would spend more time working on the stamp part and painting it correctly, so it looks better. I enjoyed drawing the dragon the most, because it was fun to do.

Calcium // Sarah

IMG_0372

The name of my element is Calcium. The atomic number is 20 as you can see on my final art print. Lime came to great use by heating limestone. Can be found in 99% bones and teeth. Calcium plays a role in having healthy bones, so I decided to draw a milk carton. I looked at different examples on Google as well as the website that Ms. Hull provided us with, the one with all of the elements on them. I drew other examples in my sketch book and asked my friends to help me choose a final design, that is how I came out with this one. If I could do this differently, I would definitely darken the parts where it would be white so that it could appear well on the paper. I enjoyed transferring my print to another paper and putting onto a construction paper. We painted our foam plate and then put it under a white paper, used a spoon (rub the spoon all over the paper), and then took the paper off of the plate. Then, our design is on the paper! I cut it out and then put it on a construction paper.

Q4 Artists Statement.

In this final quarter, I think I really gave the assignments my all.
I didn't complete the first assignment, but for the second assignment, which was figure drawing, I tried really really hard to make the person I was drawing look nice. I think I did a really good job of keeping the form, as well as all of my sketches looking nice too.
For the third assignment, line drawings, i used hatch-shading to create an entire piece. I'm really proud of this art piece, actually.
The fourth assignment, digital drawings, I made really interesting drawings using shapes that i like a lot.
The fifth, illusion of space,I made a painting I'm super proud of. I've kept this piece still, and it's one of my favourite pieces of the year.
The sixth was only completed halfway, so there's not much to say about it.
The eighth, since we skipped the seventh, is again one of my favourites. We were working with elements of art, and I kind of just had fun with this one. They're actually a few of my favourite pieces i've made in a very long time.

ending this year, I'm really proud of how I've progressed as an artist, and I think I might still have a long way to go but I'm happy with this years progress.

Fluorine// Nasya Ie

20170609_133405
Nasya Ie

This is my element Fluorine, the atomic number is 9. In 1886 a french chemist Henri Moissan discovered Fluorine. He was the first one to isolate Fluorine. Fluorine is very toxic and can reacted very easily. Since it reacts easily it is hard to store. But why did I put toothpaste to represent Fluorine? Because it is made from fluorine. I choosed toothpaste because I did some research and I was inspired by it. I put the atomic number as the floss, I thought that was clever.

The process I did is to have my design, put it on transparent paper or wax paper, then trace/transfer that onto foam plate. Finally put roll paint on the foam plate that has the design and ‘print’ it on paper.

If I got to do this again I would be more neat and organized to make sure that it would be clear to see. What I enjoyed about this project is making my design for Fluorine and printing it.

Eating Disorders: Aware, But Not Over

Hi everyone, so I’m back for my final post for this project about eating disorders. For an overview about what they are, see my first and second posts. To review, eating disorders are a medical issue when a person’s diet and relationship with food is severely damaged in some way. There are four types of eating disorders: Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge-Eating Disorder, and Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFEDs). They can cause a person’s body to rapidly deteriorate to the point of death, if not treated. I did a survey within SLA’s student body to see what people knew about eating disorders, and the answers were not positive. People didn’t really know much, and agreed that they aren’t talked about enough.

This is me working on my poster for the Agent of Change.
This is me working on my poster for the Agent of Change.

Before going into what I did to make a change in the world of eating disorders and awareness, I’m going to talk about what things are already being done. There’s an organization known as the NEDA, the National Eating Disorders Association. They provide a lot of information about eating disorders to raise awareness, and give a helping hand to those who are going through the process of getting better. They give free eating disorder screenings, host walks and other awareness events, suggest good treatment facilities, have support groups, and even have their own “NEDAwareness Week”. During the NEDAwareness Week this year, the NEDA’s goal was to get as many people as possible screened and to talk about their experiences with eating disorders using the “#NEDAwareness” hashtag. The NEDA also has a program called “The Body Project”, where they get a few groups of candidates and give them weekly workshops on body acceptance. Results show that these people tend to feel less unhappy with their body.

Now I’m going to talk about my own part in making a change. For my Agent of Change, I did two things; I made a video and a poster. The video is me talking about eating disorders, pretty much summarizing my first blog post, and talking about my own experience with eating disorders. I showed this video to both Jonas Advisory and Kamal Advisory on Thursday, June 1. I also made a poster, which currently hangs outside of Ms. Martin, our Health and Phys. Ed. teacher’s, room. It shows the outline of a girl’s body, and a speach bubble saying “I’m okay, I guess”. However, written inside of her body are a lot of facts about eating disorders, including the National Eating Disorder Helpline, signifying that this girl has an eating disorder, but doesn’t want anyone to know. I decided to do these two things because I felt like they would actually do something. The poster, for example, is something that every student in SLA will most likely see as long as it is up, because all students have class on the fifth floor. The video, I felt, would open a door to new questions and to talking about eating disorders in general. Even Mr. Kamal, being a knowledgeable adult, told me that he learned a lot from my presentation.

Now that this project is over, it’s time to reflect. Overall, I feel like I did well on this project, and I feel good about it. I learned a lot about myself, and how I feel about talking about my experiences. I also learned a bit about eating disorders in general, especially OSFEDs, and about how people’s brains work. If there are things I could do better, it’d definitely be being more organized with time. There were times when I procrastinated a lot, and other times where I felt I was doing so much my head might explode. However, I do feel like I’ve learned a lot and made a change by making others learn a lot. There is still a lot left to do to have eating disorders no longer exist, and it’s a long road, but it’s one that may eventually happen. What’s left is for people to feel good about their bodies and to not feel that food is a way to cope with life, not all the time, anyway. Unfortunately, that may be an idealistic view, but one can hope. I sincerely hope that you’ve learned from reading my blog posts, and have a great summer!

Y&TW Donald Moses: Agent of Change and mini Reflection

Hello and this is my last post for my Y&TW benchmark. In my previous 2 blogs I talked about internet addiction and one of the physical effect that can happen if you have an internet addiction or if you use your hand for anything non stop. In the first blog I talked about symptoms and how internet addiction is related to other addictions. Another thing from the blog is how some people had different views of why people are addictive to the internet and one of them was connectivity to other people. In my second blog I talked about Carpal tunnel syndrome as it was one thing on my survey that most people had no idea about. Only thing that would raise awareness that I know of is just websites from treatment centers that talk about internet addiction and contact lists for treatments. For my agent of change I did a phone free advisory. At first most of the class hated my idea but soon lightened up as my advisory did good news and shout outs. Then we spent the rest of the day planning a party on thursday which we did had to let a few people take out their electronics so we can figure out the prices. I originally had no idea and asked for help with ideas from my classmates and Ms. Giknis. At first it was stressful because I didn’t know how my advisory mates would take it but it went great so now i'm more calm about my own Y&TW. It was effective as everyone followed along with what I hoped they would of do and i'm glad it went well. At first I felt a little mad that we were getting this benchmark after we just finished another one. After I took it serious I sort of enjoyed it. I learned that people are addicted to both their phones and the internet as Ms. Giknis once said in class that she also seems to be glued to her phone and how she always just turns it on for no reason. I learned I also have an internet addiction that I can control but I always get distracted as last night I wanted to work on this but I just kept watching videos on youtube and as low as I could I yelled at myself at how I have to work on this. I can think of a few ways I could of done my project better and that would be planning it out as I wanted to try and get my agent of change done with all freshmen advisories but the teachers said they had other plans and that I should of asked earlier so time management is one thing I would of changed. Another thing would be me asking for help as most of class I just stayed in my seat thinking about what I would do for my agent of change that I didn’t do the second blog post till the day before it was due. I hope you learned a lot from this so good bye for now.

work for no reward-blog post 3

This is the last of the three blogs you can find the other  two here and here. When I start first started this project it was a suggestion from ms. Smith because she knew that i was an athlete and she thought that it  something with college was a thing I would be interesting. At first I didn’t want to do it, it wasn’t a topic that I found interesting but because my other topic was picked I did it. From this project I learned a lot from this it was something that was meaningful to me without me knowing it. From researching  about college athletes I learned about how  what a college athletes have to go through in order to pursue and education and do what they love.

When I started thinking about what I want to for  my agent of change I originally wanted to go  make an instagram account and interview college athletes and let them tell their story but because of complications with getting in contact with athletes this wasn’t going to work. Then the idea came to  me to have people wear college gear like hoodies, shirts, hats, etc. which was easy to do and post the hashtag #fortheathletes sadly the hashtag didn’t catch on but luckily I had people bring in college gear which was very helpful. This was very helpful because people that didn’t know about compensation for college athletes started to ask me about it and people started to be aware of it.  I started to notice my message was able to get out and reach more people. I notice more people wearing gear and knowing about the problem with college athletes.

For me coIMG_20170608_130450308.jpgmpensation for college athletes was a real problem maybe not as big as homelessness or female rights but nevertheless it is a problem. For a college student money is something extremely important that is essential to live comfortable. Having to deal with the playing sports with is mentally and physically exhausting to do. To me someone that goes through all this just for education should not be worried about being able to perform with no energy  even though they earn money for their school.  I believe that NCAA should think more able there athletes just because this isn’t on the pro level doesn’t mean the athletes aren’t giving it their hearts, they deserve not to worry about Money.

Sodium

My element is sodium. The symbol for sodium is (Na). Their atomic number is 11. Sodium is also known as salt. We find salt on everyday foods that we eat. Sodium has a key role in normal serve and muscle function. Also it helps keeps body fluids in a normal balance. I chose my idea by adding the symbol and the atomic number on all 4 sides. Also to make it cute i drew salt shakers in each corner of my print.
The process took some time but I eventually got it done. The first step was to research your element. Second was to sketch three ideas that represent your element. Fourth was to pick your best idea and transfer it to transfer paper. Fifth was to take your transfer paper and transfer the print onto print paper. Finally you create your print. Seventh we matted our print to give our art teacher.
The part of the project I enjoyed most was creating our final print. The steps were easy for me to complete. The only challenging part was creating a good print. I liked putting the brayer onto the print paper to make it smooth and easy.

The Walk That Made The Change

Hey it’s Kai Payton again. In my previous two post I introduced my You & The World Project. For my topic of the project I chose to focus on premature births. In my first blog post I gave basic information on premature births. I also discussed some of the more serious topics of premature births. In my second blog post I discussed stories of other families that had premature births. I also included the major parts of the interview that I had with my aunt where she talked about how she got through the experience.

In this blog I’m going to be talking about the Agent of Change portion of the project. The Agent of Change portion of the project is where you go out and do something to make a change to your topic. So since my topic is premature births I did the March for Babies walk. The walk was on April 30th and it was ran by the March of Dimes Foundation. For the walk there are teams that raise money for the foundation to help with premature births. My aunt’s team raised a little over a thousand dollars to go to the foundation. I love doing these walks every year because it’s a good way to see family but because it’s for a good cause.

At the walk there was so many people from different walk teams and I thought it was so cool that so many people support premature births. Each team gets a custom shirt to represent their team. This year my team's shirt said “Fight Like a Preemie.” In my opinion that’s another reason to go to the walks every year because every always has cool different shirts. My team is called “Chasing Jase,” and it’s made up of family and friends basically whoever comes out to support Jase. From this walk it got family members to come together to support Jase. During the walk they gave Jase a purple cape and it was really funny to see him run around in it.

While doing the walk you meet a lot of other families that share a similar story to yours. The experience creates a way to be active and meet new people who all support each other. There was a lady we met and she had a daughter that was the same weight as Jase when she was born (1 pound 11 ounces). My aunt and her had a heart to heart in a way because their children were in the hospital for about the same amount of time. I wish I had a way to thank the March of Dimes Foundation personally because the walk is always a great experience when we do it.

Before we started this project I didn’t know what direction I wanted to go with it. In the beginning I was thinking about choosing littering as my topic. Then as time went on I realized that I could choose premature births a topic that people know about but don’t know the major facts or how they can help change it and I had a better connection with it. This project helped me gain a new understanding of premature births because before I did this I didn’t know too much myself.

So in conclusion, I want to thank Ms. Giknis for allowing us to do this cool project. It helped us go out in the world and make a change big or little to a problem we connected with. It helped us learn more about each other and connect with our classmates on a deeper level.
