The Flute:

The flute is an instrument that interests me because woodwind instruments seem fairly easy to manipulate to me. In addition to this, there is a lot you can test as far as sound waves are concerned. They act as a sort of large tuning fork, and therefore testing for them can be done with a fair amount of efficiency. When playing the flute, the player essentially alters the length of the pipe by covering or opening the holes that are spaced over the length of it. This, in turn, changes the note that one plays. So depending on what combination of holes are covered and are not, when the player blows into the primary hole on one end or the other, he or she can play a note, creating different kinds of music. Now the reason for this, presumably, is because altering the length of the pipe alters the concentration of the air molecules. This, in turn, alters the amount of vibration that they are allowed, and the consequence of this is an alteration in the frequency of the sound wave that is released.

A thumb piano produces a sound by the vibrations of the metal pieces. It travels into the hollowed out box through the sound hold like a piano and makes a sound. The longer the piece vibrates the longer the note is held. The thumb piano consists of different length, flat metal pieces. You can change the lengths and tune it by undoing the bar holding them down and moving the pieced back and forth to the correct tune and pitch. For the box I'll be using wooden boards I'll cut and shape for the correct size. Then i'll take some pieces of spring metal from a rake and use that as the keys. A metal bar to hold down the pieces with screws for tuning.

Piano

The piano is classified in orchestras as a percussion instrument. However, it can be classified more of a hybrid between strings and percussion. It's played by pressing a key which triggers a hammer to hit a string which causes the sound. The note is changed when the player either goes right or left on the keyboard. When the player desires to play a higher note, they would press a key to the left and vice versa. Pianos either come in the upright position or the regular landscape position. Upright pianos are usually rectangular/square shaped while grand pianos (landscape position) are usually curved at the end, with the lower notes having protrusion. The piano's strings have different thicknesses and lengths which help to create the sound. Generally, the lower notes are played by thicker and longer strings while the higher notes are played by not as thick, and shorter strings.

Extra Credit: Favorite Benchmark of the Year

This year in statistics we have learned a nice amount of concepts that could probably help us out later on in life. We took notes, quizzes, and even had to present quarterly projects known as benchmarks to help reflect what knowledge we gained while learning these concepts. Some of the benchmarks we had to do were time consuming, tedious, and just made you frustrated, but in the end we better understood the purpose and meaning of what we were learning.
The benchmark I most enjoyed doing and completing was the 4th quarter benchmark. For this benchmark we had to create a study guide of all of the concepts we learned and if we wanted to some of the math that we would be taking up while in college. We had to make the study as if we were letting like ourselves use it to help understand what we learned or what we were going to learn while studying in college.
For this benchmark like every other benchmark or project at SLA we had to apply the five cores values with our project which are: Inquiry, Collaboration, Presentation, Reflection, and Research. Most people would think that is a lot to put into a project, but when you do the type of work we do and you do it well it comes pretty easy.
This is how I applied each of the core values to my project,
Inquiry- I asked myself what helps me learn and understand the concepts given to me in class? How many visualizations should I put in? How much detail should I add for each concept. So basically I asked myself what is it that I would like to see in a study guide that would help me with learning something I didn't understand.

Research- We had to find out what kinds of math classes we had to take during our first year in college. If we never heard or took that type of math before we had to research exactly what is was, and what we could learn from it.

Collaboration- This might not seem much as collaboration but I think it was in a way. For me I asked some people did they understand what I was trying to say especially if I wasn't sure myself. Ask people to kind of peer edit my work for any mistakes.

Presentation-  I put it all together on a keynote, which is like a power point but better when it comes to design. And for the background I made it look like a notebook to give it a school, learning type feel. I tried to make it something like a workbook a child would get while they were in the 4th grade. Something simple.

Reflection- We had to talk with my teacher Ms. Thompson about the work we did. I told her what I did and did not do well. How much effort I put into doing this project. What I liked most and didn't like most about it. So we basically graded ourselves on the project, which was cool.
It was a fun project to do, and I enjoyed doing although I thought nine topics was a bit much but I still got it done.

The sound is produced by the pressurized air of my breath as it travels through the pipe. The casing acts as a tension which once the sounds reaches the specific holes, is released and produces varying pitches. I am chaining the pitch by placing the holes along the pipe in specific spots. The spacing in between the holes are essential because it determines the pitch released. I will be using PVC piping to create the pipe. It is a material that I have used to build with before and it also seems like a the perfect material that'll help produce the specific sound I want. I still need to learn on where it is that i need to specifically place the holes and how it'll effect the sound produced.

I don't get

what makes you think acting like a dumb b*tch will get you anywhere in life. Seriously, putting on the voice of a three year old, giggling, and twirling your hair just makes you seem like a cheap immature trick. I'm just saying, if you want the guy to like you act your age, the whole little girl act only gets you so far, I mean unless you want everyone to see you as sleazy, i mean easy.

Gina Dukes' Individual Music Blog #2

In my previous blog, I did a little bit of research on two types of instruments that I thought I might be playing, which were a violin and a guitar. However, after talking with my group, I chose to pick a different instrument so that there would be a balance between string and percussion. The instrument that I will be focusing on in this blog is a flute.

Sound is produced by this instrument when air is blown into the mouth piece which creates a wave of air to flow through. The air behaves like a stiff spring and as the player continues to blow, the spring receives those pulses and begins vibrating. As the wave vibrates through the flute, sound is created.

Based on my understanding, in order to change the pitch of the sound, the player must place their fingers on different holes on the flute, to alter the flow of air, which changes the wave and therefore changes the pitch. The characteristics that are important in this instrument are, a hollow tube through which air can pass through, small holes on one side of the flute, and an opening through which a person can blow air into the instrument.

I have done some research and it seems as if the simplest way to make a flute would be out of PVC pipes because it provides a good hollow structure for air to easily travel through and for sound to be made, also it is relatively easy to find. My plan for constructing the instrument is to borrow some PVC pipes from VK's  engineering room and then carve small holes on the top, and a mouth piece on one end.

As of now, I don't have any outstanding questions regarding my instrument or this project. I would like to continue learning more about waves so that I can better my understanding of how music is created through instruments.

The sound is created by the vibration of the molecules inside the actual pipes, which is what the xylophones are made out of.  The pitch changes when you hit different keys because each key is a different size and thus creates a different sound.  The instument is played by being hit with a mallet.  i plan to create the xylophone out of either PBC piping or metal pipes.  The  have them laying on a wood structure that makes them easy to play.

The instrument I want to create is a xylophone.. It is played my hitting the different sized keys with a mallet.  The note changes depending on which size key you hit, there are 16 usually, two for each note but in different octaves. It looks like a small piano except the keys are bigger and there are no strings in the back. I do not think it will be to hard to make i just need to cut the material I am using for the keys into the correct size. I am not sure how waves connect to this but I am sure there is a reason.

To make sound with a Recorder, you lightly blow into it. To change the pitch of the sound emitted from the recorder, you cover up the holes that are located along the recorder using your fingers. You cover up a hole, or several of the holes depending on what note you want to play.

The materials I plan on using to build my Recorder is PVC Piping and a drill. I will use the PVC Piping as the actual Recorder itself, and use the drill to drill holes into the PVC so that I can change the notes I am playing as I please. However, the only problem I have is exactly where I should drill the holes so that I can play different notes when using it. Does the size of the whole matter? Does the position of the holes effect the type of notes it will play?

The Xylophone

The xylophone produces sound through force hitting the bar, where the vibration travels through the bar and into metal tubes called resonators. This is why the xylophone looks like it contains a vertical counterpart similar to the actual wood keys. These are important characteristics in a xylophone. To change the pitch, you strike a different key, arranged in octaves like a piano.

I intend on using an old computer frame stand as the base of my xylophone. I would only create one full octave because the frame is not as large as others, and the keys and bars would be made out of polished wood. For the resonators, it would be ideal to use metal pipes, but I would like to try using wood or plastic (PVC) to see what happens. I will play my instrument by using a mallet and hitting on the keys. I would use my time at home and Engineering class to build my instrument.

A lingering question I still have is: How will I separate each and every key while having it suspended on the computer frame?

My instrument, a simplified "Hammered Dulcimer":
The instrument is played by hitting strings with a small metal mallet. When the mallet hits the string, it causes the string to vibrate. This vibration sets off a wave in the air molecules - a sound wave. The different strings of the instrument produce different waves, and therefore different pitches. For example, a more tightly pulled string will produce a higher frequency wave, which results in a higher pitch. Important physical characteristics of the instrument include something to tune the strings with, so that I can make sure they produce the right wave frequency. Another important characteristic is the mallet, because that is what causes the strings to vibrate. I think that I need to have some kind of base that will make the sound more audible, but I'm not sure how. Maybe something like a guitar – a hollow wooden construction. I'm not sure. I'm not sure what kind of material is best to use for the strings, but I think I'll use a spool of "string wire". I'll need wood for the base of the instrument and also a stick of wood for the handle of the mallet. I'll need some metal for the head of the mallet. I kind of want to try to use bridges as well, but I'm not sure how those work. I need to do a bit more research into that topic.

For the 1st quarter our benchmark for statistics was to calculate the consumer price index for different grocery stores. The Consumer Price Index is a measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services. It measures changes through time in the price level of consumer goods and services purchased by households.

We worked in groups of three to collect prices of different grocery store items. My group investigated Shop Rite, Acme, and Fresh Grocer. We collected prices on items like bottled water, cereal, ice cream, bread, and chips. We used statistics by calculating the mean prices for each item in each store. After we got the mean we calculated the five number summary and IQR’s for the items. We displayed our information on box plots and histograms. We calculated this information for all three grocery stores.

This benchmark helped me better understand grocery store prices. It helped me choose which store was more beneficial to shop at when it comes to saving. I learned that all stores are not the same. Sometimes prices differ because of the brands of food or just because of where it is sold. I noticed that the same items that were sold at Acme and Shop rite were considerably lower than the items sold at the Fresh Grocer. We connected this to the neighborhood the Fresh Grocer was in. Stores in wealthy neighborhood tend to have higher prices.

How it connected to the core values:

·      Inquiry: Are question was to find the consumer price index of different grocery stores.

·      Research: We each went out to different stores to collect prices of different items.

·      Collaboration: We worked in a group of three.

·      Presentation: We presented our findings to the class in a keynote

·      Reflection: We included reflection questions in our presentation to show what we learned from the project.

New stem cell research might lead to more cloning experiments especially after the breakthrough with Dolly the sheep. Also stem cell research is leading to curing many diseases. Many experiments they do on animals have showed superb results that will soon be taken to the human stage to see if those experiments show good results also. They have been doing experiments on many animals but sheep and rats show the best results because they are cloning sheep and curing many diseases that the rats have. They are also finding many other sources to find stem cells. The best to use are embryonic stem cells but they are finding ways too get stem cells out of adult humans/animals.

Human Trafficking/Prostitution

Human trafficking is the crime of forcefully recruiting, transferring, and exploiting a human for sexual exploitation and labor. In modern day, thousands of men and women and children are at risk of human trafficking. Human trafficking has been going on for hundreds of years.Victorian Women had limited options available and found prostitution the only way to support themselves.

Some women were forced into the countries poor leaving their selves to turn to prostitution to survive.
They usually became prostitutes because they were illiterate, poor and from broken families. They suffered from economic poverty, lack of education and social disgrace. In older times, human trafficking or prostitution was a way of supporting one self. Over time, prostitution has changed terms but focused on the main ones.

Even though human trafficking isn't likely to effect me, prostitution seems to be. I know that I will not get into that as an occupation, but that type of industry can influence me to lower certain standards of mine. I am against this crime because I think that its a bad look for the world.
