Negative Space drawings

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is the space that is not apart of the object. This space is like the emptiness in a shape. Exp.In a chair there might be a whole in the chair, and that would be the space.

B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?

In my cutout I just chose what I wanted to be my negative space. It didn't really matter when I cut out the white and black shapes. In the stool drawing it was easy to find the negative space because it was basically just the empty space between the stool.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps the artist see all the details of the picture.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not

It does because it shows a different more interesting view of the picture.

Español Conversación #1

Who did you speak with and why?
On Sharedtalk, I spoke with many people. The person I conversed the most with was a guy named Rafael. It was a little bit of a challenge to speak with three people at once, switching between languages, but overall, it was worth it. I did help some others practice their english (and most of them were Native Spanish speakers).

What did you learn about the person? What did you learn from the person?

I learned that Rafael lives in New York, but before lived in South America. It was quite hilarious when I tried to figure out why our time zones were the same if he lives in South America, but then after some clarification, I realized he lives in NY, which was cool, because it made us feel closer to one another. We became good friends, even over Facebook. I learned about sentence phrasing the most, and how to say things.

How did the interaction help you with your personal goals?

This interaction helped me with me gain a little bit of confidence with my understanding of spanish. I also learned just how not to be afraid if I don't say things correctly all of the time.

What did you do well to achieve your personal goals? What do you need to improve on to achieve your personal goals?
I need to improve on my uses for estar and ser. However, I have improved on how to ask for help, phrasing general questions, and improving my overall spanish immersion.

Preguntas:

Symone's Negative Space Drawings

Negative space, in art, is space where other things aren't "present", as in, you can't see it. I found negative space in my cut out by tracing the original drawing, and cutting those pieces out. When gluing, I found out that every piece had a meaning to it. When I cut out one thing, the "extra" was actually a piece that showed negative space. When I glued it on, the blank space created a shape that made sense to show my picture as a fully grown tree. I also found negative space in my stool drawing by shading in areas that where in between the object. For example, in a stool, there are empty spaces that sort of have no meaning. I shaded in those areas to create and demonstrate negative space in the set up.
It helps an artist to see negative space because the space that's around the object they're drawing or in between are just as important as whatever they're drawing. Artist love details, and negative space sometimes brings those details to light, and adds character to the drawing. Without negative space, the drawing, painting, whatever, may not make sense.
I think that negative space does enhance drawings to a certain extent. Negative space enriches the drawing, and creates a better understanding of it. Say if someone is doing a drawing on a lamp, for example. The person may not be focused on the shape of the lamp as much as everything else, like size and color. When you do a negative space drawing of the lamp, the shape of it is more visible.

Conversation Question: What does sports look like in Argentina?

Pre-Conversation:

•  What will be your topic of conversation be?

The  topic of conversation will be about the sports that are played in Argentina and how that relates to the culture of the country.

•  What are 5 questions related to your conversation goal that you can think of ahead of time to ask your partner?

1. What is the most popular sport in Argentina?

2. What kinds of sports do you play?

3. What is your favorite football team?

4. Do most children like playing sports in Argentina?

5. Who is your favorite soccer player?

•  What are you looking forward to about this conversation?

I am looking forward to learning about the sports of Argentina since I myself is a big sports fan who follows professional football and even play football on SLA's varsity football team.

•  What are you nervous about?

I am only a little nervous about having a full conversation without using a translator. However, I have learned how to deal with this from my work on my first goal.

Post-Conversation:

Reflection:

• Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke to Juan Vela and I spoke to this person because I wanted to know about sports in Argentina and he is a native of Argentina.

• What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

I learned that Juan is a very passionate soccer fan. I learned that football is the most popular sport in Argentina but other popular sports include volleyball, tennis and basketball. I also found out that Juan plays football and tennis. His favorite football team in Argentina is Boca. Juan's favorite player is Carlos Tevez. Juan also learned that I also play football for my school and my favorite football team is Man City in the English Premier League.

• How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

I am very passionate about soccer and I wanted to learn about soccer in foreign countries and Argentina has one of the best national soccer teams. I have learned a lot of sports vocabulary while at the same time learning about something that I enjoy doing. I also liked that my conversation with Juan included different tenses.

• What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I was able to learn so much about different types of sports in Argentina and the role it play in the lives of an individual. I also able to utilize all the pre-conversation questions to guide the conversation in the direction that I wanted. I was also able to share information about sports in America with one. It was a two way cultural learning process.

• What specifically do you need to improve on?

I need to improve on my punctuation and to not rush the conversation. I need to stop asking so many questions in a short period of time.

Blog Post 2: The Dating Scene.

In America there are different ways to ask a person out on a date or flirt. I have talked to both Seniorita G and Bridgette from Peru.  Last week I posted about how to greet people of different ages. Now we can move on to dating.
While talking to Bridgette I learned that
1."Entonces los caballeros son de ofrecer pequeños detalles como flores, o son de crear poemas... ellos son mas romanticos" translated to english she said that "they give flowers and write poems, which is romantic"
2. "Estas rica"- is a phrase that means like common sense.
3." y son palabras que te lo gritan en la calle y incomodan bastante" - Sometimes they yell words across the street and that is quite uncomfortable.
While talking to Senorita G

She conformed that mean are poetic and gave some great piropos (flirting) in spanish.

Negative Space

A. Negative space is all the space that is NOT taken up by an object. It's the background space.

B. For my cut out, I found negative space in the outlining of the different parts. For the stool, I first focused on the outline of the stools and then looked at the space outside the outline, not inside.

C. Seeing negative space can give an artist more insight into what they are drawing, and how the object affects the space around it.

D. I think that negative space enhances a drawing, because you become more aware of the environment that the object you are drawing is placed in.

Negative Space Drawings

What is negative space?
Negative space is the empty space that is around and inside the drawing, it is whatever the drawing isn't.
Explain how you find the negative space in your cut out and your stool drawing.
First, the entire shape has to be drawn. From there, you shade in all of the empty space that the shape does not cover. Everything you shade in is the negative space.
Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings?
I think it does, because it is a simple concept yet it allows the drawing to be seen in a completely different way, and it looks really cool.
Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
It helps the artist because it lets the artist see the entire drawing as a whole, including the space that is not being used. It could inspire unique ideas to alter the negative space, and gives the artist a different perspective that could give the artist a whole different view on future projects.

Getting los Numeros - Spanish Flirtation

Spanish flirting and English flirting are extremely similar. Everything begins with small talk, but you can begin small talk without getting the person's attention first, can you?
Screen Shot 2012-04-30 at 7.37.39 PM

These are things that one might yell across the street to a person they find attractive. If the person takes the bait, you can move on to the next step, which is making small talk.

Screen Shot 2012-04-30 at 7.39.34 PM
Once small talk has been initiated, and a conversation is going, the next step in Spanish is the same as it is in English. Set a date. Ask them out.

Screen Shot 2012-04-30 at 7.41.24 PM
Alright, you've obtained her attention, and free time, now you have to get her number. It's time to seal the deal.

That's all the time I have for this week! Check out the next blog post where we're going to discuss Spanish Insults!

Addition to Week#2 Post Welcome Diego!

Another conversation that I completely forgot about was one that I had with Diego, a guy I met on conversation exchange. Our conversation wasn't very much but it did run pretty smoothly until he started correcting me and having me talk in English. But it did start off we just Spanish right off the bat. Which was pretty neat, and I was happy to see that he used words I didn't know with me. This isn't much since I hadn't talked to Diego since that chat but I feel as though him and Kleber are the most helpful out of the ton of other people I got in contact with.

Negative Space

A. The space between the objects and air. It helps you not get confuse on if the drawing is an item or just blank space.

B. Cut out:

The black paper helped me determine the negative space.

    Stool Drawing:

The dark area helped me determine the negative space.

C.  It help an artist to see in negative space so the artist would get distracted by the empty space before the object itself.

D. Seeing in negative space enhance drawings because it make it seems more realistic.

Negative Space

Negative space is the opposite of an object that is drawn. It is all the space that is around your drawing. For example if you draw a lamp all the negative space is around the lamp.

In my stool drawing I found negative space where there wasn’t any stool. For example, I found negative space between the legs of the stool. The rest of the negative space was basically in the background of the stools. In my cut out, all the negative space was found in all the light areas of the picture.

Negative space helps artist draw the shapes for each drawing. I do think it enhances drawings because it makes positive space stand out. Also I think it looks cooler.

Espanol Conversacion #2

Pre-Conversacion

What will your topic of conversation be?

In this blog post I will talk about sports and what kind of sports they play.

What are 5 questions related to your conversation goal that you can think of ahead of time to ask your partner?

What Sports do you play?

Do you want to visit an American sports event?

What is the main sport in your country?

Did you play sports in school?

Do you watch sports on Tv?

How do you anticipate your partner will respond to your questions?
I believe that they are going to respond in English mostly because since that Is the language they are practicing, they will want to feel comfortable answering in english, while I ask in spanish.

What are you looking forward to about this conversation?
I am looking forward to learning about the person, and the kind of sports that they like to play. Also, what sports in America they like to play.

What are you nervous about?

I am nervous about getting something wrong or saying something that they will not understand. Hopefully they can help me if I am wrong. Also and worried about saying something that might be offensive but I wouldn't mean to be.

Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke with Javier from Spain. I Choose him because he was learning English but was a spanish native. He also started talking to me first so I thought why not create and continue the conversation. He also likes sports like me.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
I learned that he likes soccer, and usually run. He also loves english and american accent. I learned from them that they don't show football on Tv there because spanish people don't like it.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

He made me feel comfortable about asking questions about sports because he felt comfortable about answering. Also, he helped me out because he was answering questions that I was asking which made it easier to talk about my topic.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I did well was greeting him properly, asking how he was and then starting off with the topic I was going to talk about. I like that I asked questions in spanish and tried to talk through it in everything I said.

What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

I need to learn to use subjunctives and learning to conjugate a little better. That's why I am glad about doing this because the chats can help me learn more.

Negative Space

A. Negative space is the area of the sketch or drawing that is not the thing that is being drawn. It makes up the background.

B. To find the negative space in my two projects I saw where there were no object. For the second project I used the background to figure out where the negative space was. In the stool project I used the space where there were not any stools to find the negative space.

C. It helps the artist recognize the shadow and understand the shape of the object. It makes the artist comprehend the depth of the object.

D. Negative space allows the artist to have the right amount of gap in between each object.

Negative Space

1.) What's negative space?
* I think that negative space is open space of a drawing that is to be shade in.

2.) Explain how you found negative space in 1.Your cut out? 2. In your stool drawing?
*I found out the negative space in the drawing by figuring it out and by to take a look at it and see the parts what is to be shade in or what is to be cut.

3) Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
* It can help a artist to figure out and see the object of a drawing as in a outline and it also helps to see better.

4.) Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

* We’ll first I do see drawing clear but they are hard to try to figure it out first. Your eyes have to get use to the drawing and get use to it, to get a clear picture.

Goal #3: Get to know a stranger/ask random question

  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I spoke with Angel Cares. He's 22 years old and he lives in Chile. I chose to speak with him because he seemed nice and I liked his name.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
I learned that he is studying psychology in college and that he's been in college for 4 years now.
  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
It helped me move towards my achievements because I didn't expect for him & I to talk about college. He asked me a lot of questions, which I thought was cool because I wasn't doing all the work.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
I think I did pretty well with asking questions that wasn't so boring. That's what random is all about.
  • What specifically do you need to improve on?
I need to improve on my long sentences. Making sure that it sounds right.

Henninger Conversation, Post 1

  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I spoke with a man named Sergio and he was a native spanish speaker. This man invited me to private chat and I asked him if I could ask him questions for a class of mine. He was very polite and accepted.

  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
I learned he was from spain. I asked about what kind of music was popular and what was on the radio. He told me what kind of music he listened to. He said he liked jazz and classical music.

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
It helped me understand that is spain, they listen to the same types of music we do, only the artists are speaking spanish.

  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
I found very good answers to what types of music are popular in spain. I think it was good because he helped me understand that they don't only listen to flamenco or chahca or any other stereotypical spanish music.

  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)rc
I wish I had asked more questions about the culture and not specifically to Sergio.

Negative Space

IMG461
IMG461
A.  Negative space is all the parts of a picture that aren't the frames of each thing in the picture. So its the spaces around the objects in the pictures. For example. The sketch above is of a turned over chair 2 stools and a wet floor sign. You can really see the 2 stools because the negative space around them outline the stools. But for objects like the Wet Floor sign you can only see parts of it because only the top part is in a negative space or has negative space.

B: In my cut out I found the negative space in everything I didn't cut out. So the construction paper that never got cut, was on the left side positive space and on the left side negative. In the sketch above, the negative space was pretty much everything sketched and scribbled around the objects. But the white spaces, the object outlines, were the positive spaces.

C. Seeing negative space as an artist really helps the artist draw a more accurate and precise drawing of the object they are drawing because they not only take in mind what the object in and what are the details on the object but also the details around the object.

D. Yes. As I said in part C it really helps because, let's say, you are drawing a cup. You think of a regular glass cup as a cylinder. But if you take into account the things around the cup it might actually seem like a basic cylinder to you. It will then become a more detailed "cylinder" or in this case, a more detailed cup or a more ACCURATE AND PRECISE cup.

Negative Space

What is negative space? Lets say you were viewing a building, and you were drawing the building. What would you usually do? You would draw the space that the building occupy’s. The space that you normally leave blank would be the negative space, the space that has nothing in it. That space is the negative space.

In the cut out drawing I did. I took the one half of the bird print out, and I would trace each part on the green piece of paper, and I would equally balance the green cut outs on each side of the black background. It is hard for me to explain it so if you take a look at the drawing, try to see what it is that I did because I cannot put it into words.

I found the negative space in the stool drawings by examining the objects and determining which space would I normally draw, and what space I would normally leave blank. Then I would draw in the space I would normally leave blank, and leave blank the space I would normally fill in.

For an artist, if you see negative space, you see more of the picture than is you were just looking at the positive space. It can help you make a much better drawing than previously before.

Seeing negative space can enhance drawings if you know how to use it properly. It can make objects stand out if you want them to. It is a very useful tool.

Negative Space Reflection

A: Negative space is the area around shapes that is not being used

B: i knew the negative space in the cut out was the background shapes that were darker color. I knew the negative parts in the stool drawling were the parts inside each shape and angle.

C: It helps an artist by giving them a better way to shape their image so someones eyes can adjust to it and see the image more clearly.

D: Yes, it does help, it enhances the image so the naked eye can focus on the actual part being looked at better.

Negative Space

A. Negative space is the parts of a picture/drawing/painting etc. that is not filled with an object or person. If it were compared to a freezer, it would be the air, and the non-negative space would be the food.

B. In my cut out, I found the negative space by cutting out the objects, and then pasting them on one side, while a pasted the left over parts on the other side. For my drawing I simply drew the air, or the things that weren't there.

C. It helps artists to see in negative space because it helps with depth, and the outline of the drawing. It helps the artist create a clearer picture of their subject.

D. Seeing in negative spaces drawings because it adds definition, depth, and clarity to the piece
