Mysterious

The world is a mysterious place
People come and go
Leave and enter
A person could vanish into thin air
And I swear no one would notice
It just mean there would be more room to walk on the sidewalk
Extra room in the bed
More air to breath
And yet there will always be someone
someone out there who will weep because that person is gone
even if they were a hobo
Maybe it's out of pity
Don't really know
Will the day ever come when this will also disappear
Will it vanish just as mysteriously
Will someone weep then
Will there by anyone out there who will feel pity then
If so then I will wait for that day to come
Until then I will close my eyes
And wait peacefully for the day
When I will mysteriously disappear along with this world of mine

Venezuela? - Natasha Ashby

Public Vs Private

The transition from middle school to high school is often considered one of the most trying times of a kid’s life. It is when most kids leave behind the safe environment that they have grown to trust throughout the years and it is replaced with teachers that no longer hold their hand through every assignment and peers that gossip about their insecurities and embarrassments. These changes are amplified when you switch from a private school to a public school. For nine years my single mother was able to scrounger up the funds to provide with the type of educational foundation that would last me a lifetime, but she knew with the current rise of college tuition, she would need to use high school as a time to save money.

For years I had seized the benefits of small class sizes, increased individual attention from teachers and learning in an environmental filled with an eclectic group of diverse people that all shared a set of common goals and ideals. This was a place where people seemed to honestly enjoy coming to school for learning’s sake, rather than to just get a good grade in order to escape the scowls of parents. Accompanied with lavish offerings in extracurricular activities, and freedom from the school district to take interesting trips to places such as Costa Rica and New York that all aid to the learning and development of a child, this was undoubtedly an ideal environment to grow up in.

My high school may not be the traditional public school. It has helped me hone several important skills such as inquiry, research and leadership. However, in one year all of my cushy surroundings were taken away from me. My current science class has 35 other students it – more than the maximum amount required by the district. Last month, the government officially put a number on the amount of cuts the school district will be facing due to the recession: $465 million. This will severely limit – if not discontinue – a large amount of extracurricular activities and opportunities my school is able to provide.

I, in no way, consider myself an elitist, but I have goals and I refuse to let anyone try to guilt me for being an “over achiever”. Why do we live in a society that discourages hard work? What can we do as a society to ensure that we continue to progress? These are the questions that have plagued me throughout high school. My transition to high school has definitely been a culture shock for me. In many ways I consider this the toughest academic challenge that I have had to endure, and I am committed fixing this issue, helping people realize their true potential. I once received a strong piece of advice from a teacher that I strive to live by: “Everyday, just make sure that you strive to be the best version of yourself and everything else will fall into place.” By living by these words, I believe I am fostering the type of environment that I wish to live and play and learn in, and I sincerely believe that dedication will benefit others.

Dear The Book of Lost Things by John Connelly,

For many years I harbored the secret desire to become a centaur as any young girl might. However, after reading this novel I am now suitably put off the notion for any mention of the word centaur forces me to think of the deranged hunter who shared my desire to become one of the greatest hybrids mythology has ever known. So thank you very much.

         from,

             Viscountess Elvira VinHousser III

P.S. Despite the book tainting my centaur dreams, I found it to be just wonderful.

Texting (4/27)

So what are the expectations when you are texting someone. For some odd reason every time I text girls or most girls, if I do not respond to them within 5 minutes, I am apparently being rude and ignoring them. I mean come on... I have stuff to do instead of sit around my phone waiting for it to light up and quickly responding. Then the girl gets frustrated and annoyed and I am stuck dealing with her upset. Not cool, totally not cool.

Art Sculptures

Below show the photos of sculptures I made from clay. They were put in a kiln and during the process, some of the prints were messed up. It wasn't my first time creating something like this. I made two sculptures, because of the carving instrument I used. It was difficult to be in control of how deep I made the imprints within the pallet. My final result is something I am happy with, regardless of the minor flaws within the sculptures.

Negative Space drawing Reflection

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Think about a normal drawing of an object. Lets use a chair. You would draw a chair, then when you are done you would have the outline of the chair (and maybe some shading too.). Look at the space outside of the object. This is what we call a negative space. In a negative space drawing, you shade all the negative space to make the chair appear. You do not draw the chair first, however.

B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?

In my cutout, I used the templates given to us by Mrs. Hull. The templets were of a shaded part. I had to pieces of construction paper. One was black and one was pink. The pink would be the only paper I would cut. The black paper would stay in one piece the whole time. I cut the correct areas out then traced the cut outs in the onto the pink paper in a way that made the picture half negative, half positive.

In my stool drawing I found the negative space by looking at different shapes in the stools. I pictured the outline in my head then shaded the areas around it. The part of the paper that was not shaded made the shape of the stool.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps an artist to see negative space because then you get to see both sides of the picture. Positive is one side. The side you see normally. Negative is the other side. The side you see less. With negative space you see it more.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not

It really depends on how you want the drawing to look. Negative space is good for when you want a darker background. It also makes the drawings more accurate because they will have more points of view.

Tattoo

I am currently sporting a tattoo on my wrist....It is henna though. I know how to use the traditional Indian henna paste but I decided to give myself something small for fun. I know how to do some of the bigger pieces of henna art though and have given others tattoos with it.

Negative Space

Negative space is the space around the object. It is like the background of the object.

The way I found my negative space in my cut-out was from first cutting the tree in one background color then place it on another color background. In my stool drawing I drew the shapes inside of the objects with the orange paper in the background.

Negative space helps an artist because it can help see how the drawing looks like even more realistic.

Yes, seeing in negative space enhances drawings because it will help you draw it more detailed and correctly.

I Knew You Were The One

It was my last class of the day but it seemed like it was going by slowly. So to make it go faster I decided that taking a little nap might help(not really bur it sounds better this way). I took my nap and when I woke up it felt like I was sleep for what seemed like three hours but it was only an half hour. After leaving the classroom I called my mom to see if our plans for later were still on. She told me they were but I wasn't so sure. You see my mom has a tendency to tell me were going to do something, but then something always gets in the way, But this time it was different. She sounded just as excited at I was when she told me we were still going but I had to be home at 3:30 pm. They left me with a couple of hours to waste time and do whatever.
So after school I chilled with Darnell which is nothing new. This is something we do every Wednesday especially if we have nothing to do at all. So we chilled wasted time by being our little silly selves. Then we went down to his job because today was his payday. And while we were there we figured that we mine as well get something to eat, so we did. I just felt so hungry. The food helped curve the hunger. Then it began to rain really hard we knew it was time to go our separate ways and head home.
I got home around 3:28pm. I thought my mom was already going to be there, but she wasn't. So I sat downstairs on the couch waiting for her. I figured that she wouldn't be that far away. Before I knew it I was dozed off and then my phone began to vibrate. At this time it was a little after 4. It was my mom. She asked me where was I and I told her in the house. She said ok she is on her way. I thought to myself she should of been here but hey this is suppose to be a good day. I dozed off again, then I hear my phone vibrating. It was my mom again telling me she was outside. I quickly get up and walk outside. I jumped in the car and asked her where were we going. She told me to Lord and Taylor. I was confused for a moment and she could tell, "just trust me", she said. I sat back and just went along for the ride.
We got inside and we couldn't see where the dresses were. So my mom asked a lady that worked there. I thought to myself and asked why would they have an old lady doing this type of work. I guess the old need money just like the young. We went to the back where the dresses were and from what I saw I quickly became discouraged. I didn't even want to look anymore. My mom suggested we try dresses on to see what color I needed. So we did that. It was this one dress i thought the colors looked really nice on me, but it was too big. It just didn't fit me right. Next I tried on this pink dress to see how that color looked but my mom stopped me before I could even look in the mirror. She didn't like it. I never believed when people said third time is the charm but I became a believer today. The third dress I tried on made me so happy. I couldn't stop looking in the mirror. And I got so many compliments on it. I knew this was the one. it just felt so right. There was just one thing It needed to be altered because it was too big for me in the waist. Good thing they did that there.
I couldn't believe it I found my prom dress and it only took two and a half hours. I guess you just know when something it the right thing for you. And I found my perfect dress.

Time in Dc

My father planned a trip to take my brothers and I to Washington dc to see my two sisters, step mom, brother in law, niece and a newly born nephew I didn't know I had.
We had fun. I seen a comedian side of my father I never seen before. Hanging with my family, they all spoke with a heavy Jamaican accent, but I could understand everyone. The confusing part was that I couldn't speak it, and when I talked they sometimes couldn't understand me.
