Lobbying #2: Lobbying: Advocating For Homeless Youth In Philadelphia

398563

5th District Council Representative DARRELL L.CLARKE

Darrell-L_-Clarke

Representative Darrell L. Clarke is a member of the ethics and housing/

homeless committees and also is and advocate for public safety in Philadelphia.

 Current Work:

Representative Darrel Clarke was also responsible to advocating for the reconstruction of the Girard avenue and Spring Garden street stops along the Broad street line. Representative Clarke knew that those stations were anywhere from 75-80 years old and that they no longer met the Americans with Disabilities Guidelines. Using the money from the Federal American Recovery & Reinvestment Act, he has done close to 36.7 million dollars in work.

Although many people know him for changing the subway stops Representative Darrell Clarke is mostly know for his dispute with the Boy Scouts of America over their anti-discrimination policy. When the representative heard that the Boy Scouts weren't allowing homosexual males to be scout leaders he immediately started his plan to action. Representative Darrell Clarke was quoted saying “At the end of the day, you can not be in a city-owned facility being subsidized by the taxpayers and not have language in your lease that talks about nondiscrimination,”  “Negotiations are over.” The Boy Scouts had been living in their building since 1928 but now are facing eviction if they don't not pay up.

: Lobbying Assignment #2 - Researching Officials -

Chaka Fattah was a resident of Philadelphia Pennsylvania and attended Overbrook High and eventually went on to Community College of Philadelphia.  He got his MGA from U-PENN’s Fels institute of Government. Fattah first served in the House of Representatives in 1983 until 1988 and then as a State Senator from 1988 to 1994.

Chaka Fattah has stood up for some what I believe would be good initiatives. One of my favorites would be the Clean Energy Act of 2010. However it seems like he is mostly involved in students and student education which is understandable considering his background and where he was taught. Most of his “Major Achievements” has a lot to do with education and some of his other achievements has a lot to do with energy efficiency.

To relate to Chaka Fattah I would attempt to relate on on a level of what I feel about education and I respect that he is very involved with education because that is the key to the future and keeping these young people off the streets. The government takes money away from our schools and the sports teams and don’t realize that sports and after school programs give children something to do. I think he would respect where I’m from and what school I go to and all of the things I am involved with and that would give me a great impression and something to connect on.

From there it could be a nice transition to energy efficiency and how I worked at the EPA. From there I would go into the whole fracking thing and talk about the effects of that in the waters and how water relates a lot to energy and it’s efficiency. Without water there is no life and I would also talk about how fracking is horribly regulated an something should be changed about that. He has a good history with wanting to switch ways in which we use energy.

Curfew Lobbying Blog Post #2

There are various council members here in Philadelphia, ten to be exact for the ten different districts. Those who represents my lobbying topic would be those who’s on the Rules Committee.  The chair of this committee is Anna C. Vera, the vice chair is James F. Kenny and there are seven members who consist of Darrell L. Clarke, Frank DiCicco, W. Wilson Goode, Jr., William K. Greenlee, Donna Reed Miller, Blondell Reynolds Brown and Frank Rizzo Jr.  I’m sure I wouldn’t need to talk to all of these people so I would first start with Anna C. Vera because she seems to have the most experience on this committiee.  In 2008 she was beginning her THIRD FULL term as council president which shows she must be really good at her job. Anna represents the 2nd district and her community interest is more so with housing. Because she seems to only oversee the Rules Committee more so than actual perform the same jobs as the council members, more than likely, I would be redirected to a council member who could represent me and my lobbying ideas.

Quarter 1 Creative Project

Reflection

A clear explanation of what your creative piece is about, what it represents, and how you attempted to get the point across.

My creative I chose to do a poem because it was a form of art that I felt most confortable doing and presenting. After reading the scarlet letter watching the Juno, it seem that the characters acted/felt one-way and said something different. The poems were basically the inner thoughts that were not said in the movie and/or text. I didn’t try to disguise it I just said it plain and simple.

How you went about crafting your piece. What was your process like? Did you encounter any problems/issues as you went along?

In class we talk a lot about what characters dialogue. We specifically examined what they said with their mouths vs. what they said with their body language. We noticed that what they said didn’t always match up with what they felt and/or thought. So with that, I kept each main character from Juno and the scarlet letter came up with a theme for their feelings/thought. Then I linked two from each that hand similar themes. For example, the theme I came up with for bleaker was about concealed emotions. Then I went about coming up with the poems because I already knew what I want to write. I just put it all in a powerpoint. The pictures chosen behind the text were silhouette because you can see them but not their entire identity just like in the character's thoughts.

What are the aspects of the project you believe you did well?

I believe I the part of the project I did well was the preparation and application. I believe it was because we were told about the project before hand and shown examples of other projects. I just knew what I wanted to talk because it was a topic that stayed in the classroom for a while. When were told we were doing a creative project, I thought poetry. My project just took off from there.

What aspects of the project do you feel you could have done better?

I feel as if the creativity level should have been way higher. Compared to other people’s ideas I don't feel like my Project was that creative.  On the other hand I also do not believe I could have shown much more creativity in my poems. I knew what I wanted and when I was finished I thought about what everyone else said they were doing and I felt as if my project wasn’t up to par.

If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently?

If I had another chance or more time, I would not have did something completely different but I would have added something to it. I would have tried to make a sculpture or did a drawling representing the theme of each poem and/or person.

Public Officials Help with Stem Cell Research

I am a proud South Philadelphian and my house is located in the 2nd Congressional District of Philadelphia, which is represented by

Democratic Congressman Chaka Fattah.

 110405_fattah_376

Before, we go into Chaka Fattah and his policies here's some quick information about him:

-Born on November 21, 1956.
-First assumed office on January 4, 1983.
-Served as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from the 192nd district from 1983 - 1988.
-Served as a member of the Pennsylvania Senate from the 7th district from 1989 - 1994.
-CURRENTLY member of the U.S. House of Representatives from PA's 2nd district since January 3, 1995.
Fattah's Community Interests/Policy Initiatives:
-One of his major contributions was his Communities Commited To College (H.R. 1579). This "provides a 50% tax credit to donors who contribute to “qualifying scholarship trusts” which are partnerships between local school districts and community based organizations. (from http://1.usa.gov/rP4dHA
-Student Bill of Rights (H.R. 1295) makes public schools more valuable by assuring that highly effective teachers work there, early childhood education is started, and theres a college preparatory curriculum.
More policies can be found here : http://1.usa.gov/rP4dHA

Now, when it comes to my main point, and what I'm lobbying for - More federal funding for medical stem-cell research - Chaka Fattah is a complete supporter. In fact, Chaka Fattah has voted IN FAVOR of 6 different stem cell research enhancement acts including:
-Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act (2005)
-Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Act of 2005
-The Alternative Pluripotent Stem Cell Therapies Enhancement Act (2006)
-Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005 (voting in 2006 to overturn Bush's veto against stem cell research)
-Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007
-Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007 (once more before Bush vetoed against again)
Data from : http://bit.ly/rZKurc

It is safe to say that Chaka Fattah is in favor of stem-cell research and definitely believes in all of its potential medical benefits, similarly to the way I look at the future of stem-cell's usage in the medical science field.
More Fattah info here : http://bit.ly/cCa1cMhttp://1.usa.gov/aI4IFi

A member of the U.S. Congress who is one of the most influential bill creator when it comes to stem-cell research is congresswoman Republican Diana DeGette of Colorado's 1st Congressional District.

DianaDegette

More about Diana Degette here. http://degette.house.gov/

Diana DeGette sponsored the Stem Cell Research Advancement Act of 2011 (H.R. 2376). This bill was introduced on June 23, 2011 but has not yet been passed by the House, therefore; it has not reached the Senate nor the President (Obama). This bill calls for the Secretary of Health and Human Services to conduct stem-cell research as long as the stated requirements are met. The requirements often change but these are the summarized requirements for the 2011 Act.
-the stem cells have been donated to the vitro fertilization clinics
-determined that the embryos couldn't be used in any female and were going to be discarded.
-individuals that donated embryos have signed required papers.
-keeps the Secretary of HHS "from using any funds for the conduct or support of human cloning."
More details can be found here: http://bit.ly/t6zoOz

Both of these public officials share common viewpoints with me when it comes to stem-cell research and some of their other acts/policies. There is no doubt in my mind that Fattah will continue to vote in favor for Stem Cell Research Enhancement Acts as will DeGette. I hope that they continue to advocate for the advancement of stem-cell research due to the medical breakthroughs that can potentially result from their support and advocations.

I think I used my language skills very well and was loud and clear enough. I also thought it was pretty cool that i had music playing in the background

I wasnt very organized and i didnt do everything in the same order as everyone else so even though i had something i didnt have what was wanted specifically and that messed me up.

How did you apply the SLA core values to your project?
I didnt really use inquiry but i researched alot of summers from my past and i think i gave a pretty good presentation. Collaboration was big too, because we had to rely on others to peer edit.

What did you learn about Spanish through completing this project?
I learned a lot about watching my sentence structure and making sure the spelling is right. A lot of words that I thought had accents really did not.

What did you change about your final project based on peer feedback?  What did you change based on Srta. G’s feedback?

If you had the opportunity to start your project all over again, how would you do it differently?
I would start it the same as everyone else so I could actually get a better process grade on it instead of doing it in different orders and  having my process grade suck.

Did you enjoy this project? Why or why not?
I thought it was cool. Its going to be interesting to see some of these and see students when they were younger.

Do you have any suggestions for me if I do this same project next year?
I would just take a little longer to explain what exactly you want first next etc, I dont really feel like you explained that too well, or you could just get rid of that all together and just make a checklist that they could do in any order because in my opinion that just works so much better then just telling kids what to do when to do it on a creative project.

Lobbying Topic - Solar Energy #2

I put in some time researching the city officials that are in favor of implementing clean energy all over the city. I immediately stumbled across the Philadelphia Government Mayor's Office of Sustainability. It is a website devoted to Mayor Nutter's plans on making the city the number one clean city of the world. This included the Solar city partnership page. A pretty small page for something that's supposed to represent the entire city, or at least that's what i think. So i dug deeper and found the Greenwork Energy Word Press. Again it talks about Mayor Nutter and also other local and federal officials who celebrate the installation of the solar PV at the water pollution center. After digging a bit more I uncovered a handful of Facility Plant and Utilities Owners are in favor of green energy to their facilities. But few think about the surrounding cities itself. It was even claimed that the Philadelphia Water Department's Solar array could fuel 28 homes a year. Interesting. So i plan on contacting Nutter or even a secretary if possible and talk about our common interests in helping out the city. You know, the stuff that can't be found online.

The representative of the district I live in is Frank DiCicco. He is in charge or district 1. He is also a resident of South Philadelphia. He has dealt with many careers such as public serving as a Committeeman, a long stint at Philadelphia Traffic Court serving as a Director of Scofflaw and Enforcement Units, Courts, and Violations and Cashiers, Budget Analyst, and more. DiCicco always believed in community involvement, which makes a strong community. He has served at many places because he believes in helping everyone and getting involved.

Frank DiCicco voted for curfew. In 2010, he stated the reason he votes for curfew is because of Flashmobs from teenagers. He said that it has created fear for residents and something needed to be done. On September 22, 2011, Nutter announced the new curfew for minors. My legislator is arguing something different from me. I am against the curfew. Now that I think of it, I am not against it. But I would like for the government to realize that there are minors that work after school. Here is a link to the document that was made to make sure the curfew was definite:

Lobbying for funding for Philadelphia After school programs: Blog post #2

Natalie Sanchez

Congressman Robert Brady and Senator Robert P. Casey Jr. are two of the several political leaders that represent me and can, quite possibly, support my lobbying case.

Robert Brady is Philadelphia's congressman. He represents us, District 1 (the city of Philadelphia) in the house of representative. He was born and raised in Philadelphia. Later in his life he became a carpenter and joined both the Carpenter's union and the teacher's union. His main priorities are to defend the rights of veteran officials and other members of the armed forces. Despite his emphasis towards the rights of soldiers, he is pushing to withdrawal American soldiers from Afghanistan. Some of his other priorities directed towards making more laws for the development of Philadelphia and helping people with low economic income. He also supports laws that supply Americans with quality healthcare and prescription drugs.

Senator Robert P. Casey Jr is an advocate for the state of Pennsylvania in the Senate. His main goals are to create laws that will better our economy, raise employment rates in America, and benefit the children in the same. In the past, he has supported laws that have covered more than 14 million children in America with health care and that work to raise business tax cuts in order to raise the rate of employment in the U.S. He also supports America's  economy and pushed to make it stable. An example of this is his opposition to China's devaluation of its currency, which raises the unemployment rate in America. He wants to help stabilize our economy.

I feel like both of these political leaders share something in common with me. Robert Brady and I are alike because we were both born and raised in Philadelphia and feel a strong need to help those less fortunate then us. Senator Robert P. Casey Jr and I are similar because we both support the rights of children and want to make conditions better for them in America.

I feel like Senator Robert P. Casey Jr will be more likely to support my lobbying case because he is more concerned with the rights of children than congressman Brady is. Congressman's Brady's interest's are concentrated more broadly on the rights of the citizens of Philadelphia in general, and not specifically of the children of Philadelphia. Congressman Brady might also support my lobbying case, as he works to help people with disadvantages. Some students in Philadelphia are at a disadvantage because of where they live- they feel unsafe in their own neighborhoods. This is what has compelled me to support after school programs in Philadelphia public schools. It might also compel Congressman Brady in the same way.

Net Neutrality - Blog post #2

In the ongoing debate of net neutrality, the people representing me on a federal level are the House Representative for the 1st district of Pennsylvania, and the Senators of Pennsylvania. These elected officials are as follows: Robert Brady is my Representative, and Robert Casey Jr. and Patrick Toomey are Pennsylvania's Senators.

Robert Brady has served seven terms, and is currently serving his eighth term as the Representative of Pennslyvania's first Congressional district. Robert Brady has consistently earned high marks ("A" or 100 percent, depending on the grading system) from every national human rights organization that scores Congress. Robert Brady is a huge advocate for improving the quality of life for financially disadvantaged people, as well as the well being of veterans. In addition, he voted no on H J Res 37, a bill intended to stop the FCC from enforcing rules that would keep the internet a free place, which supports my cause.

Robert Casey Jr has been a Pennsylvania senator since 2007. He's very interested in the U.S job market. He's made many pushes to give tax breaks to small companies, and eliminate tax incentives for large companies to send U.S jobs overseas. He is also a huge supporter of future generations, and is an avid advocate for child education and child care. He voted yes on S Amdt 3907, an amendment to a bill that prevented telecommunication providers from performing surveillance on their consumers through the services they provided. This is another key point in net neutrality, that internet service providers cannot do anything with the information sent through their service unless it violates a law/terms of service.

Lastly, Patrick Toomey, even though he was elected to the first Congressional district of Pennsylvania just this year, he had previously served the fifteenth Congressional district of Pennsylvania from 1999 to 2004. He is very interested in improving the economy, and as such serves on many boards and committees regarding the economy. He voted yes on H.R.3709, a bill that prevents local and state governments from taxing internet access for another five years. Even if it's not the most related bill to net neutrality, it does illustrate some interest in maintaining internet accessibility, one of the founding principles of net neutrality.

Although it seems that net neutrality is on the back burner of legislation, based on these voting records, I think it's fair to say that they would all be in support of net neutrality, or at the very least neutral.

1. This project was intended to make us learn what people did during their previous summers while also practicing conjugations.
2.I used Inquiry because I wanted to know what I did that was good and bad when my peers peer edited my work. I used collaboration when they edited my work and I edited their work. I used research when I went through my Step dad’s iPhoto and looked for pictures of previous summer. I used presentation when I made my iMovie. And my reflection is what you’re currently reading.

3. I learned how to conjugate better in the past tense and about other people's summers.
4. I feel like I understood it really well from the get go. I feel like I moved forward a lot more once I sat down with my step dad to find pictures from previous summers.
5. I would look for more pictures of past summers and use a lot more descriptions.
6. I enjoyed this project a lot. It helped me learn something I wasn't very good at (past tense conjugations) and it felt like a good, and laid back way to help me learn spanish.

Bike paths lobbying-Blog #2

The second step to my lobbying topic is to find out the State representative regarding to my topic. My representative is also the representative of the State of Philadelphia Traffic Court. The representative for the Philadelphia Traffic Court is FRANK DICICCO, along with seven traffic court judges.

Frank Dicicco councilman is currently serving as a Philadelphia’s First District City Councilman. Dicicco started out his life resident in South Philadelphia and his career began at Philadelphia Traffic during the year of 1967. After 1986 Dicicco left Traffic Court and became a Budget Analyst for the Pennsylvania State Senate. However, in 1990, Frank Dicicco advises his skills to bear as the “Deputy Director of Special Investigations for the Philadelphia City Controller.” But after 1993, Decicco decided to return to Philadelphia Traffic Court and work as an Administrator, which he then run for the First District City Council. Dicicco is now working for the Philadelphia district 1 and the founding of Philadelphia.

During November 18, 2009 Councilman DiCicco introduced a Bill regarding to bikers and vehicle in Philadelphia. The bill is basically states for riding safety purposes and to recognize more laws in Philadelphia/Pennsylvania that is relating to double wheels vehicle. Dicicco and other council members are working together to enforce more laws as well as rights for the bikers out there in Philadelphia.

Q1 BM spanish Max Amar-Olkus

In this project, we had to collect pictures from our summer and write captions to go with them in the past tense in spanish. The mission was to show that we have a firm understanding of past tense conjugation in spanish.
I used the research part of the core values in this project when I needed to look up a word or conjugation. I used the inquiry value when i asked questions about this project. I used the collaboration part when I peer edited to improve my project. When I did the voiceover i used the presentation value. I am doing the refection part of the core values right now.
I learned about conjugation in the past tense for normal verbs and even some irregular verbs. I also learned more about imovie.
If i could do anything differently, I would add more pictures.
I enjoyed this project because I got to look through pictures from past summers.

Asking/Telling Time

What if you were placed in a situation where you had to ask for the time in Spanish or someone who only spoke Spanish asked you for the time? Here is what you would need to know:

1.
What time is it?(English)=¿Que hora es?(Spanish)
2.
If the hour is 1, say "es la".
If the hour is 2-12, say "son las".

1:00=Es la una. 3:00=Son las tres. 5:00=Son las cinco.
https://dl-web.dropbox.com/get/Public/Movie%20on%2010-28-11%20at%2012.32%20PM.mov?w=d25ef6b7
3.
If the minutes are 1-30, say "y" between the hour and minutes.
If the minutes are 31-59, state the hour ahead. Then, say "menos". Finally, say how minutes there are until the next hour.

2:12=Son las dos y doce.  7:36=Son las ocho menos veinticuatro.

Additional Information:
-If the hour is 1, say "una" instead of "uno".
-If the hour is on the dot, say "en punto" after the hour.

7:00=Son las siete en punto.

-Cuarto=15

3:15=Son las tres y cuarto. 3:45=Son las cuatro menos cuarto.

-Media=30

7:30=Son las siete y media.

Anna C. Verna, who is the president of the city council, became the first women in Philadelphia’s 300-year history to become the president of the city council. Ryan Francis Lobbying Topic #1

In the city of Philadelphia, the percentage of African American males & females incarcerated is gradually climbing. 70% of the inmates in Pennsylvania on death row are of african-american decent, and there are roughly 85,000 people in this state alone jailed. 50% of them Are african american. The topic I chose to Lobby is the african american incarceration rate. (In the chart below, you can see the incarceration rate by typical race)
raceinc
The reason I wanted to research, and monitor this topic is because Ive been involved in some of the movements to change it, such as the
Saving Our Boys seminar, the Think & Grow Rich conference, Daddy University, and the Young Men's Conference. The purpose of these events/conferences was to reach young boys between the ages of 10-17 to connect them positive adult leaders who could push them in a positive direction, to keep them from becoming lost to the jail system and the dangers of the streets.
So far, in Philadelphia, people have been planning and establishing these events at different locations such as Benjamin Franklin High School, the School District Building, even at the Philadelphia Convention Center. Some of the people involved are Howard John of C.E.O. of S.E.I.L. (Success through Education, Inspiration and Leadership), Michele Lawrence, of Call me KING, and Michele Jackson of Positive Impact. Each of these leaders has helped empower the young african americans around the city if Philadelphia with knowledge and drive to achieve new heights in their lives.
There are not really any people opposing it, but a lot of people promote, and accept it. The main point of this topic is to show the change that is proposed to fix the incarceration rate of african Americans, & for people to see the movement that is happening within the community. There is no pending legislation, but there needs to be some type of Law that fixates to not only the black community, but teens at a whole to keep them from getting in trouble, or there needs to be some rally to get teens into doing positive things and staying out of trouble to keep them from BEING incarcerated.

How to say proper greetings en Spanish

The first thing you need know before you can speak Spanish is how to say your greetings. You can’t just talk to someone in Spanish unless you know your greetings! This is why I wrote this topic. The first thing you need to know is how to say hello, and Good morning/afternoon/evening, in Spanish. Then, you will learn to say, “how are you?” to someone, and how to reply back. Lastly, you will learn how to say your goodbyes in Spanish.
